May 8, 2017, Brooklyn, NY – VICELAND, the lifestyle and entertainment network from VICE Media and A+E Networks, is rolling out a diverse and compelling line-up of new and returning shows to run throughout the summer.
New programs making their premiere on the network this summer include the network’s first fully-scripted comedy with James Van Der Beek as Grammy winning musician/DJ/producer Diplo, a series from emerging entertainment mogul Tyler, the Creator, a series from up and coming performing artist Kevin Abstract as well as a compelling docu-series on an underground Mexican basketball league funded by drug cartels.
Also returning to VICELAND are network staples; “HUANG’S WORLD” with Eddie Huang, “STATES OF UNDRESS” with Hailey Gates, the skater contest / scavenger hunt / endurance challenge “KING OF THE ROAD” and the animated raconteurs of “PARTY LEGENDS.”
ABOUT THE PREMIERES
Thursday, June 8 @ 10:30 PM marks the debut of “AMERICAN BOYBAND (WT).” The show stars Kevin Abstract, the front-man of the Brockhampton collective – a group of young musicians and artists (self-described as an all-American boy band) who all met on a Kanye West fan forum and have since come together under the same roof in South Central, Los Angeles. The show accompanies them on Abstract’s first-ever headlining tour across North America.
While on the road, the group also shoots their own film project featuring Kevin’s alter ego, “Helmet Boy,” with aspirations to pitch it as a series for VICELAND. AMERICAN BOYBAND takes viewers into the mind of these budding young artists as they strive to achieve and understand fame in the internet age.
On Thursday, August 3 @ 10PM – VICELAND drops the beat with the premiere of “WHAT WOULD DIPLO DO?” a loving send-up of the electronic dance music scene and the network’s first fully scripted comedy series.
Described as a hybrid of “Louie” and “World Star Hip Hop” crossed with “This Is Spinal Tap,” James Van Der Beek plays a fictional version of international DJ superstar Diplo in a show about life as seen through the eyes of guy who can bring 60,000 people to their feet… but kind of sucks one-on-one.
“WHAT WOULD DIPLO DO?” is executive produced by Van Der Beek and Diplo, TMWRK’s Kevin Kusatsu and Brandon Dermer, who also directs. Content studio Matador also produces the series with Jay Peterson, Todd Lubin and Jack Turner serving as executive producers.
Also debuting August 3 at 10:30PM is “NUTS + BOLTS” which follows musician, designer, record and TV producer Tyler, the Creator as he seeks to find out how some of his favorite things are made then endeavors to re-make those things tailored to Tyler’s own creative vision.
Episodes see Tyler making everything from his own stop-motion animated short to a new kind of breakfast food all with Tyler’s inimitable viewpoint and style.
“NUTS + BOLTS” is produced by Tyler and Whalerock Industries and is based on a show from Tyler’s own Golf Media App.
Finally, THE LAST SHOT, premiering August 8 @10PM, is a documentary series that follows the lives of American and Mexican basketball players whose careers have been derailed, as they travel south of the border in search of one last opportunity to make a living playing the game they love. The series follows three teams to cash-prize tournaments all across rural Mexico, where the rules are constantly changing, fights and corruption are common, and cartel involvement is always just beneath the surface. Players experience foreign food, cultural differences and exotic locations, all in the hopes of being spotted by professional scouts, and one last chance to resurrect their broken dreams.
THE LAST SHOT is from Goodfight Media and Oscar-winning documentarian Alex Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions.
ABOUT THE RETURNING SERIES
In the second season of STATES OF UNDRESS, premiering June 6 @ 10PM, writer, model and actress Hailey Gates continues her exploration of global fashion far beyond the runway, showing us what the world wears, and more importantly… why. Gates crisscrosses the globe visiting far-flung locales including: France during its heated, and globally impactful Presidential election where anti-immigrant sentiment has manifest itself with a national ban on traditional religious garb like the Muslim burka. In addition, Gates travels to Thailand where gender fluidity and fashion are intertwined; Liberia, where fashion is helping the country recover from its Ebola crisis… and Independence, Ohio for its second annual Concealed Carry Fashion Show.
The one and only Eddie Huang is back with HUANG’S WORLD on June 28 @ 10PM. The chef, bestselling author, fashion designer and producer returns to VICELAND with his popular series. Once again, Eddie takes a look at the nature of identity and multiculturalism through the shared and universal experience of food. His journeys take him across the U.S. from Hawaii and it’s rich native culture to the whiter than white shores of Cape Cod as well as American cultural centers L.A., New York and DC on the weekend of the Trump inauguration. This season also finds Eddie travelling through Asia, South America and one of the wealthiest places on earth – Dubai.
KING OF THE ROAD roars back to the air on June 8 @ 9PM. Once again, “Jackass” meets “The Amazing Race,” as Thrasher Magazine’s annual scavenger hunt returns to VICELAND with a vengeance. Three groups of the world’s best skaters [Team Creature, Deathwish, and Enjoi] go on the adventure of a lifetime, putting their life, limb, and dignity in increasingly ridiculous peril.
To rack up points, the teams must complete challenges that run the gamut from pulling a 360-degree flip while wearing high heels to eating a raw egg, shell and all or shaving off an eyebrow. In other challenges, the teams pick two riders to be handcuffed to each other for 12 hours and complete a ridiculous range of tasks and tricks.
And for the first time – an all-female team joins the action mid-season.
Notable and notorious personalities share their most candid and entertaining party stories on the new season of PARTY LEGENDS debuting June 8 @ 10PM. Filmmaker Lance Bangs envisions each one with help from emerging artists and animators. Some of the notable storytellers include: Run The Jewels, Andy Dick, Paul Scheer and VICELAND’s own Desus & Mero.
