After Monday’s disastrous debut of Lone Star, there has been talk that FOX might scrap the series after just one episode. Now, it looks like that won’t happen.
In Lone Star, Robert Allen (James Wolk), is leading a double life so that he and his father can pull off cons both big and small. Things get especially complicated when Robert feels personally connected to his marks and starts to regret what he’s doing. Others in the series are Jon Voight, Adrianne Palicki, Bryce Johnson, David Keith, Eloise Mumford, and Mark Deklin.
The show premiered to a terrible 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 4.1 million viewers. It ranked a distant fourth in both categories and lost 69% of House’s lead-in audience in the demo.
Network execs are understandably confused by the series’ lack of viewers. After all, they gave the show a great lead-in, lots of promotion, and have a handsome and likable lead actor. FOX execs and many critics really like it too. The Washington Post called Lone Star “better than almost anything new this season,” while the New York Times said the show is “clever” and “endearing.”
According to NYMag, FOX isn’t throwing in the towel just yet. Lone Star is still in production, with the cast and crew working on episode six. FOX will keep the show on the air at least until this Monday. Their hope is that it will make some connection with viewers now that they’ve had a chance to sample the shows on the other networks.
At this point, any positive growth might be enough reason for them to keep it on the air another week. Unfortunately, they won’t see the DVR ratings for a couple weeks. Given the tough competition of the night, many people very likely recorded Lone Star to watch later.
Any way you look at it, the Lone Star’s ratings would have to come up a lot for it to be considered a moderate success. Even those that tuned in for the premiere may not bother to return, having already heard that the show is cancelled.
What do you think? Is Lone Star worth saving? Will you tune in, even though there’s a good chance it’ll be cancelled?

I can’t believe this show was cancelled without the network moving it to another time slot first to see how it would do. This is a great show and deserves at least a full season to prove itself. It is certainly better than The Good Guys, which is a sloppy attempt at slap stick comedy and cop drama. It makes cops look like buffoons. There were too many good shows that all debut at the same time on all of the networks. Unfortunately you can’t watch all of them at the same time.
I now realize why people subscribe to cable. Shows are not canceled on cable channels like they are the 3 major local networks. I watch little TV; but I thought this show was so much better than all of the crappy reality TV that is on now. This show was just starting to show a complicated, indepth look at how the man’s childhood had shapped him and his wanting to do what is right and at the same time try to keep his daddy happy. Even though he is married to two women, he probably did that to please someone.… Read more »
This show was great! By far the best one of the season on all networks! Please bring it back!
I AM SO UPSET THAT JUST AFTER SEEING 2 EPISODES AND GREAT ONES MAY I ADD, THAT THIS SHOW WAS CANCELLED. IT HAD MY ATTENTION AND I LOVED THE PLOT OF THIS SHOW. I TOLD MY HUSBAND ABT IT AND AFTER WATCHING THE FIRST EPISODE HE WAS HOOKED. I KNOW THAT IF FOX HAD GIVEN IT JUST A LITTLE MORE TIME, IT WOULD’VE RECIEVED THE RATINGS IT LOOKED FOR FROM THEIR VIEWERS. WHAT FOX NEEDS TO KEEP IN MIND IS THAT AT THE SAME TIME THAT LONE STAR PREMERED, IT WAS THE SAME WEEK THAT ABT 4 TO 5 OTHER… Read more »
I AM SO TIRED OF NEW SHOWS BEING CANCELLED BEFORE WE GET A CHANCE TO GET INTO THEM! THE BIG WIGS SEEM TO ONLY GO BY HOW “HOLLYWOODLAND” THINKS! APPARENTLY IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW THE REST OF “WE SMALL TOWN AMERICANS” FEEL! MY DAUGHTER & I LOVED THIS SHOW AND COULD NOT FIGURE OUT WHERE IT WENT, AND WE WOULD LIKE FOR IT TO COME BACK! PLEASE STOP CANCELLING SHOWS BEFORE EVERYONE GETS A CHANCE TO WATCH, ESPECIALLY WHILE PREMIERING SEVERAL OTHER SHOWS AT THE SAME TIME! I AM ALSO WONDERING ABOUT ANOTHER NEW SHOW I LOVED THAT HAS… Read more »
I LOVE THIS SHOW. PLEASE DON’T CANCEL. ALL OF THE CAST DO A GREAT JOB, IF THE NETWORKS NEED TO CANCEL SOMETHING TRY ONE OF THE CSI OR LAW AND ORDER SHOWS THEY HAVE BECOME SO TIRESOM, AND EVERY OTHER DAY A NEW ONE POPS UP. KEEP LONE STAR.
Was really getting into this show and I frantically tried to figure out what the heck happened to it……………please give it a chance, I’ll spread the word and so will everyone else that likes it!! Somebody should make a FB page “SAVE THE T.V SERIES LONE STAR” LOL
I got hooked after just watching the pilot . Man’ I dont know what im ganna do know. I mean I like Lie To Me but Lone Star so awsome.
I was out of the country for 2 weeks and recorded it ..I just watched Lone Star I think it would make a great addition to the Fox program …On my DVR it recorded only 1 Episode was that all?I sure would like to see more …DVR recording is becoming more and more of a live style does it actually count towards ratings?
I LOVE this show soooooooooooooooooo much I can’t believe its already over!!!!!
I LOVE this show and miss it after only I think 3 episodes.
Seriously, I watched the first episode and forgot to DVR it so missed the next one. WHAT IS UP with the networks canceling shows before people even realize they’re on?! Like that show last year about the lawyer’s on ABC written by the Grey’s Anatomy people…only four episodes, but my roomie and I were tuning in every night! Buffy the Vampire Slayer was slow to grow and became a huge hit. Give shows a chance, network bigwigs!
