Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I thought the end cheated the loyal viewers. It gave everyone a preview of the future, but there was no reasoning behind the killing of Joe. We’d seen in many other episodes where the girls dreamed of their possible futures and Joe was always in them. Life in the DuBois family could have easily continued with out killing him at that moment, much like the real life of Allison. It was a slash & burn ending to a show that deserved better.
The biggest part of the show I will miss is the relationship between Joe & Allison. It was a bitter sweet ending but I’m glad the writers gave the fans a good ending and thanks to the cast for their outstanding performances throughout the years. Wish it could have lasted a little longer, but all good things come to an end 🙁
I hate seeing it end, but I am glad it got the end the way it weanted to. Instead of just being cancelled in May without a real series finale. I liked the ending actually. It was memorable and it gave a real ending.
Had no clue it was ending and kept expecting something to happen to bring it back whatever was really going on. Not knowing the series was coming to an end made it quite depressing. Depressing that the series ended so suddenly without warning and depressing that you felt you had to kill off Joe. Not nice CBS.
I hated that it ended but the ending was befitting to the characters. Joe and Alison had to be together and that is what ultimately happened……
Yes, the show was bitter sweet ending. I love(d) Medium. The show reminded me that dreams do matter.
The writing, story lines and the family relationship (particularly between Allison and Joe) were so engaging. I wish it had lasted another 7 years. Great way to end it though by giving us a chance to say goodbye as they waved to the camera. Nice touch.
I was so surprised to see that it was the last show. I had no idea. It was my favorite show. Who was the idiot who cancelled it? Why didn’t they ask the public. I am so lost and angry at the ending with no way for it to come back. Don’t want to watch re-runs!
BRING IT BACK!
I think CBS for canceling Medium! I have not missed one episode since Medium began! CBS needs to rethink and bring back Medium. I loved this show.
I did not know this was the last show ever, until I started watching. I have watched from the begining. I love this show and will miss it dearly. I cried the whole show. Loved the ending with Allison and Joe (best TV couple EVER). Thanks to all the cast and crew for such a GREAT show!!!
I’ve loved this show for years & loved this episode. I thought for sure when she “woke up” she’d be in time to stop Joe from getting on the plane. How wrong I was! I was crying through Al & Joe’s “last” conversation but it was so beautiful. A great show and a great cast that clearly became a family. Medium, you will be missed!
Absolutely thought it was wonderful, couldn’t have been a better ending.
Hated to see it end.
I hated that they had to have them die. They could have just moved them forward in time and gone on leaving a possible return later. I loved the show and was a faithful viewer never missed an episode!!!!! I will miss it I own all the seasons and still watch it on TV. I am sure the show will be greatly missed by all of us loyal fans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! good luck to all the cast members!!! Hope they do something else to still be able to watch them.
I too thought it a bittersweet finale….especially because the reltaionship between Allison and Joe was so sweetly (and well) portrayed. Very sad to see this series end. Extremly good job by all the cast; I couldn’t wait to watch it every nite. Became a fan mid-series and now guess I need to find the earlier seasons and watch them!
I have watched the show since the beginning and was completely unaware it was ending. It was one of my favorite shows! I will really miss it. I wish it would have been a two how finale. I didn’t like the episode except the part where it showed all the actors at the end. Where was Bridget in the episode?
We were sad and surprised to see the show end, as we have been enjoying it for over 5 years. However, the last episode deserves an A++
