Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I hated the ending. I watched this show for seven years and now it is ruined. I can not watch repeats knowing how things are going to end for Joe. Joe worked so hard, it is too bad he never really got to enjoy the fruits of his labors. This goes down as one of the worst endings for any show on TV. Why do writers feel they need to end on such a low note. I wish it would have ended with Allison finding Joe in Mexico and starting a whole new life with him.
I hated that Joe died but the fact that he waited for Allison….priceless. I hate that it was cancelled but as long as Joe and Allison are together, I’m okay.
I will really miss this show. I didn’t know it was the lst episoade, so I’m in shock. Why is the show canceled? Was it a problem with the cast or popularity?
thanks,
Carol
Really going to miss this show. Characters were well developed. Felt I knew and liked each one. Sad that the series was cancelled, but feel the writers did a admirable job bringing closure to the story and characters. Hope to see members of the cast in other shows. Great cast!! ~~Good luck!
I hate that Medium is over and I didn’t think they needed to kill off Joe. The series has had such clever plots all along and I would have loved to have seen more of them including the children. Hopefully we’ll see it in reruns but then the death of Joe will be hanging over the episodes. They could have taken a hint from Charmed and 6 Feet Under and just showed them mostly happy together in their old age enjoying their offspring.
Despicable. Why didn’t Joe’s Father tell him not to fly, he gave him business advice? Why did his Mother come and tell Allison “dark” days were ahead, instead of being horrified her son was about to drown. Ugly. Illogical. Trash.
I love this show….sorry its gone, boo hoo.
I the show all ready bring it back
i miss the show already bring it back!
I have to add my comment about the CBS show MEDIUM being canceled. It was one of the best shows about people MY age on TV. This also goes for COLD CASE. Everything else is still geared to people under the age of 40, and I am now 57. There are as many people my age who still like an intelligent, smart, interesting drama as there are people who want more “reality” shows. No wonder I don’t get too involved with television like I used to because when you do, they are taken off for various reasons. Too true, and… Read more »
Loathed it. Despicable. Insulting, a slap in the face. Joe was the draw. Writers never get why their shows are popular, I guess. Either that or they are getting revenge. Illogical…why didn’t his Father tell him not to fly to Hawaii….he gave them business advice. Joe’s Mother is depicted as coming back and ominously telling the female lead that “dark” days are ahead…instead of being shocked and horrified that her son is going to immediately die in a plane crash and rot at the bottom of the ocean. Come on!!! What a bunch of rot.
very good ending. the ghost and mrs. muir.
will really miss this show. i have been a loyal viewer from the very 1st episode & found this 2b the most creative & imaginative murder mystery shows of all of them. it did have a good run of 7 yrs but will be missed
I’m heart broken….i understand that they tried to wrap it up, but the end was just awful to me….i feel cheated.
I loved the show and will miss it. Think they made a mistake taking it off. I have to wonder if the “real” Allison Dubose being so very rude on an episode of Real Housewifes of Beverly Hills had anything to do with the decision.
It sure made me rethink her show and stories.

I did not realize that it was the final show till the end. So, naturally I was waiting for Allison to wake up and joe to be found alive, only to have it confirmed that we were fast forwarding thru life. A beautiful timeline and a tear jerker. I am heart broken. I looked forward to every Friday night to watch this show and now it is gone.
Goodbye to the DuBois family and good luck with your future endeavors.
My house will miss you!
