Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

This was my favorite show!! I totally enjoyed watching the show.I didn’t know it was cancelled. I wish it was never cancelled. The cast was awesome. The mystery of Allison talking to dead people was great. The best show ever!
CBS is stupid for canceling a great show. How sad, and the last episode was not as great as they thought it was.
I totally agree! Stupid! Great actors and directors,
the crew just great. It’s really devastating.
All good things must come to an end. I thought it was a great ending, life isn’t perfect but most people seem to have faith that an after life exists and that it is perfect. I hope the family that the show is based on does live happily ever after. The cast and the writing was great.
I was way confused and disappointed by the last episode of Medium. It was one of my favorite shows–a perfect fit for Friday Night. I was actually shocked at this bizarre good-by, hopeful again at what appeared to be Joe’s return, then completely bummed at the final conclusion. I think it was stupid to end it so abruptly, but I thank the actors and writers and directors, etc. for all of your great work. Especially Patricia, you rock!!!!!!!!
the ending SUCKED. Do not want reality in my tv watching. I want happy ever after.
Were the ratings that bad?….I loved watching.
It’s Friday night and my 8 o’clock hour is lost. I have trouble getting the local CBS station even on my 23″ digital TV; I don’t have cable or satellite and the digital conversion boxes suck big time. I finally invested in a better antenna just so I could watch Medium. And now it’s gone. Starting a Medium savings plan so when it is available on DVD I can afford it. Hey, RERUNS are better than NORUNS; already missing this one.
I too was unaware that the series was being canceled. The whole program was a total shock & I kept thinking & waiting for her to wake up. It was very disturbing. I would even go to say that it probably gave some people nightmares. This was one of the best series on TV since “Reba” ended years ago. I hope Patricia Arquette gets a new series, she was what made the show great.
This was my favorite show! I had no idea it was not running another season , so the story really shocked me and left me bewildered!
I am really sad to see this end, I hope it comes back!
I had no idea. This sucks. This was one of the best shows on TV. Didn’t Patricia Arquette even win an Emmy not long ago for her role in it. This was the best TV couple I have ever seen. The chemistry, the ‘realness’ of their relationship. What a shame. I am glad I missed the last episode – it sounds way to sad.
I am so sorry it has been cancelled, and don’t understand why.
I looked so forward to Friday evenings to watch, “MEDIUM”, one of my favorite shows. I had no idea it was the final show but it certainly kept me guessing until the end, and I was crying. I will really miss it and loved everyone of the characters. The actors are fantastic.
I am very disappointed that Medium went off the air. My husband and I always looked forward to watching it every Friday night. I didn’t even know that last Friday was going to be the last episode. I think they did a great job with the last episode. I am going to miss the show.
So sorry the show ended. One of the best shows ever!! How would they ever bring it back…Great work by all the cast. It was exciting to watch everyone grow. The show will be sadly missed by many!
I am finding myself ridiculously saddened by the way they chose to end the series. I did not want their story to end that way and it makes me sad to think of Allison waking up in the middle of the night from one of those awful telling nightmares and not have Joe there to ask her if she is alright. I know that sounds silly but It makes me sad to think of a life for her without him.
