Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

“Medium” is over! How very sad! I was not aware that the show was coming to an end! When I saw the show yesterday (since I recorded it with my DVR), I said to my husband, “Oh my God…this is their last show!” That’s what made me get on this site in order to be absolutely certain that “Medium” had its finale. Why did Joe have to die? Honestly, now the show can’t have a “MOVIE” or a “REUNION” or anything like that! I think it was a cope out for the show to have Joe die. That’s a disgrace.… Read more »
I did not miss an episode in 6 years. How did I not know the series was ending? I just tuned in to watch my favorite show not knowing it was the finale! Sucks big time!
i was very sad too. i loved this show!!!
I only watched this show the last two years along with some occasional reruns of older shows. I knew nothing about the other show, TRHOBH, for which I am glad. I just really enjoyed the family portrayed on this show. I was totally surprised, but thought the last episode was very well done, with a real finish. I am sorry that it will be no more, and I will miss it. Friday nights won’t be the same.
The last show was wonderful as were virtually all of the others. What a shame it was canceled, as it still led every week in its time slot in the ratings.
I bid a fond farewell and tearful to my favorite television show and its always outstanding cast. May God bless you all.
It seemed to me that the show got cancelled after the real medium showed her true colors. Not a nice person at all and she cast a shadow over the show. I suspect one of the Grammers were the move behind the cancellation and I thought the final show was very corny and not up to its usual standard of good entertainment. It was made in a hurry.
Was one of the best TV shows. I’ll miss it and the show’s inventiveness which always made everything bellievable.
You know they could have at least made it two
hours and taken their time to do a story we deserve
that had dignity and that gave us that last connection we have
always had with the characters. They were our
family too.
I just kept thinking that Six Feet Under did it better. Also wondering how the real Dubois family felt about killing off the father?
I wish they would had Joe with his own company and Allison as a lawyer. After years of working for other it was Joe’s time to have his company. I did not like the ending.
I didn’t like the last episode. Too confusing with Joe sending her a dream to find him later on in life after she thought he was dead. I liked the show, but the last episode gets ‘thumbs down’ for me.
Alas, the end had to come for “Medium,” as it does for us all. I thought the final script was brilliant. Fooled me, right up to the end, with tears in my eyes. Congratulations to the magnificent cast, producers, directors, writers and everyone associated with this four-star series. See you in my dreams – and, of course, in the DVD’s! Will be looking for all of you in films, TV shows, etc. in the future.
It’s a shame that Medium’s finale came so suddenly…or does it have to do with the “real medium” acting ridiculous on Housewives of Beverly Hills? I’ve watched Medium from day on and never, ever missed an episode. It’s a shame that we didnt see Bridgette go to college or fall in love. Nor did we Ariel get married or finished school? The ending would’ve been great after seeing the kids grow up and go there separate ways, of course, after Allison solves more problems but not like this. It’s sad that Camille Grammerson brought her friend down with her, if… Read more »
I loved this show and I am so sad it was cancelled. I work a very hard job and loved coming home on Fridays and having my dinner while watching this show. I never went to bed upset over this show-it was a show you could enjoy. This was a beautiful husband an wife relationship. How dare them cancell something so beautiful. They did not ask the fans.
They sure didn’t ask us. There are so many bad
shows on and they take off the good ones. I lived
for Friday nights. That was my husband and my
date night ritual. Eating Pinkberry frozen yogurt
and watching Medium, and if there were two episodes
we missed that was a bonus.
No….I was too sad! I really loved this show! Why would I want to see them aged, then dead! very sad!
I loved Medium and looked forward to watching a show that had a happy ending each week. I enjoyed watching the girls grow up and have there own story lines. I was saddened by the ending as it as not a happy ending. I wish TV networks would realize now more than ever we need neat endings on TV to balance the harsh realities of life.
Farewell Medium I miss you so.
My husband and I were totally shocked by the final episode, because somehow we had missed the information that it had been cancelled. We suddenly realized our friends were gone for good. We’re not even occult types, but we loved the plots and particularly the relationships of the family. We will really miss the show.
I’m confused- Why didn’t the youngest daughter “Marie” say goodbye at the end with the others??
@Lisa: The character was played by twins and they were the first to wave goodbye before running down a hallway.
