Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

So bummed, I had no idea it was the last episode! I never missed an episode, it was a great series and I will miss watching.
It was a decent finale but I will miss the show. I am disappointed it was cancelled.
I didn’t know it was the last episode until I watched it. 🙁 Can’t believe they cancelled it, could have done so much more. The simple explain away of the Mexican cartel case made me feel I just wasted 45 minutes watching the show. Thought the ending was nice and touching though.
I am so sad to see this show end. I have enjoyed all the shows so much. Some were hard to watch, but I was addicted. I was happy to see that Joe and Allison ended up together again.
I loved the ending and how everyone said good-bye. Very fitting.
Medium was (is) my favourite show, and now it’s over. I had no warning. Nobody told me. Maybe it’s all a dream and I’ll wake up to find it’s still on for another season. Flashpoint used to be on right after on CBS, and it’s now only on CTV in Canada, ruining my Friday nite tv viewing. I missed the first couple of years Medium was on because I’d never heard of it, but when I did start watching, it quickly became a favourite of mine. Partly because I really like Patricia Arquette, and partly because I have telepathic powers… Read more »
Sad that it ended with his death so early. However, great that they brought this series to an end rather than leave us hanging like so many other series have been.
OMG I am so sad. I will miss this show so much Alison, Joe and the entire cast. What a great show! So sorry to see it end.
Awesome, of course. Will miss watching ‘Medium’ caused I loved all the cast, . . .did not know it was the season finale and just sank at the end! Love you guys, God bless and THANKS 🙂
I THINK IT SUCKS
I’m depressed. This being the series finale was a total surprise, and until the very end, I was trying to convince myself that they could still continue the show somehow, that Joe didn’t really die, etc. I will be sad and depressed for awhile. Damn you CBS. What are you going to replace it with– another money game show, or a crappy reality show about greasy NJ creeps? I give up. I’m going back to reading. Screw the CBS suits. ********.
I thought it was a cliff hanger and I kept praying it was not really over for Joe, or Allison, for the kids. I really liked this show.
I truly am sorry to see it go.
I feel like I lost a best friend…..I don’t want the series to end. It’s such a great concept….I always believed that when it was time for Allison to ‘retire’ that the 3 girls would carry on the episode, in a new, NOW version. How disappointing CBS….guess I’ll have to record ABC shows that keep on going! I’m sad!
Wow- what an ending- very good- some twists and some sadness 🙁
Loved how the cast said goodbye at the end !
It was Ok, It came as a shock, I didn’t know that some idiot canceled one of the best shows left. It was very very sad to end the show so over the top tragically. I hate the loss of real dramas and the rise of idiot TV unreality shows. I morn the loss of real writers and real actors and actresses. Maybe ABC, FOX or Lifetime could rewind and start again!
Sorry to see the show going off the air. Was a bit of a shock. Enjoyed all seven season.
Thank you
