Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I have only watched the reruns. I really never watched the original series. I didn’t realize then it was based on a true individual from Phoenix. I did a little research and found allot in common with the show. Love love love it
You can watch the whole series on hulu
I was so upset that they killed Joe. I loved loved Joe and only Joe understood Allison
I hated the series. Joe was dismissive, which was annoying and Allison was a complete idiot. She constantly called, waking people in the middle of the night when there was nothing they could do until the next day. She was always whisper/yelling and berating everyone when there was NO legal supporting evidence to arrest the alleged criminals. You’d think she’d have figured that out over 130 episodes, but no. I also think anyone who only whisper-talked in the office would be fired because no one could hear what she was saying. I wished every episode that Joe tell her he… Read more »
lol The whisper yelling! That got on my nerves, too. But Joe did it, too. In fact, the whole family had this weird mumble way of talking. Kind of drove me crazy. Duvalus was soft spoken as well….
Amazing show….Terrible ending. It was incredibly abrupt. There was so much story left to tell. I’ve never been so horribly disappointed by the end of a series in my life! you took one of the best shows ever and basically decided to just crap all over it. Anyway even if joe did die, why end the show?????? He’s not even the main character in the first place. What happened to bridgett? what happened to Marie? What happened to Devalos??? Did he win the election? Did Allison actually become the district attorney? Did someone else? Did she continue to do her… Read more »
There is no show without Joe!!! He was/ Is the glue!!!
I agree. I watched the original series and really liked it. But watching the whole thing in reruns on Hulu, I liked it even more and appreciated the creative writing that lasted throughout (not easy to do, it seems, with a series over five years old)–until the very last episode. It felt thrown-together and abrupt. VERY disappointing! (I must not have watched the final episode when I watched the series originally because I didn’t remember Joe dying.) I loved their interactions! A shame it ended that way.
Very disappointing ending. To watch that entire episode only to confirm that Joe really did die was heartbreaking. Didn’t like the way they flashed forward 41 years to watch Allison die.
Me either!!! And Allison to die alone!! Come on!!
It was wonderful! I really enjoyed this episode and like the way they wrapped the show up!
It was a good show for the first few years. It seemed Joe never learned anything living with the Medium and he became extremely annoying. The same with her co workers. They never learned. Themes kept repeating. Getting the kids into the stories was helpful. It had a good run.
At least the show had some things you can watch with your family the younger kids and didn’t have to worry about too much sex and stuff for watching the other children
It was a clean enjoyable shoe.. realistic… and the fact you can’t watch anything without the foul language and nudity….. the show really stood morally!!! And there isn’t any like it anymore
I really wish they never took Medium off the air…I cried thru almost the entire episode!
On mother’s day Eve I want last episode just started watching rerun pawn Stars it was a great show Happy mother’s day
I agree. I loved this show. Wish they never took it off air
I watch the repeats on StarTV
No a horrible conclusion!
I thought the ending was brilliant though I am sad it has finished I looked forward to it and missed most of the early ones . A great series well done all
I love Medium! Great show, great actors, love most of all the family dynamics and the love between Joe and Alison. I watched the show when it came out and have seen the re-runs twice so far. Watching the end of season 7 right now.
W just started writing weight watching medium reruns on Starz it was a beautiful series I like Joel 2 couldn’t believe he died wish I was watching it years ago but the show was really great
If you have a channel called Start TV it is on everyday…2 episodes…I tape it since I hate commercials…I will cry again when the last episode airs again.
I don’t like that they killed off Joe. They could have had it a dream within a dream, but no, they had to kill off the best husband ever. They could, in theory, bring it back as a TV mini series or two-or-three parter episode, with the age-old dream sequence. It would be interesting with technology, the crazy political environment, pandemics, etc. weaving throughout. No one seems to bring up the fact that Bridget had a foreshadowing dream of Joe’s death. That episode where she dreamed that (her Mom) saw a plane wreckage, picked up a wallet that was Joe’s,… Read more »
I started watching this on Start TV and am addicted to it…I tape it every day and look forward to watching it…but not the last episode as I know I will cry again. It is amazing all the posts I found on this site, I really miss this show…Thank God I found it on Start.
I feel like there were other clues as well, that he was going to die. From the 1st season when she visits that other psychic, she tells Allison that there is a darkness over her marriage. And when Joe’s mother dies, she tells Allison that she sees some things that she can’t talk about. That is what bothers me – why didn’t anyone warn Allison that Joe would die?
I was devastated at the way the series ended. I wanted a happy ever after ending with the girls grown up with their own families etc. Alison & Joe living out their lives
happily growing old together. I cried when Joe died in the plane crash especially
since they were a loving devoted couple & parents. It was so sad to see Alison l ok st without her soul mate. Plus I didn’t wantvthe series to ever end, I will miss them all including all the regular cast.
I agree with you…I so miss this show!
Sad to see medium end medium allways kept me interested very good stories exclelent actiing love the cast nice to see happy ending
For seven seasons, everyone who dies remains at that age and in the same clothes. Then Allison dies and she is magically turned back into a younger woman, her dead husband’s ago, so that they can spend eternity as sexually active, peak-of-health people. Very Mormon, actually.
Just saw it yesterday for first time on Smart TV. Sorry to hear Joe was dead and she would have to get thru her life missing a part of herself. Ending was nice circle complete altho was a little dizzy with the final kissing circling. Like the additional closing by identifying each actor and their goodbye, and the info on the real Alison and family. Dot i, cross t.
