Last May, CBS announced a bold move, to take their hit The Big Bang Theory off of the Monday night schedule and shift it to Thursdays, to take on NBC’s traditional night of comedy. In its place, the programmers put another show co-created by Chuck Lorre, the creator of Two and a Half Men. On paper, it sounds like a brilliant move. Now that the Mike & Molly’s premiered, how do things look?
Mike & Molly follows Officer Mike Biggs (Billy Gardell) and Molly Flynn (Melissa McCarthy), a fourth grade teacher. They meet at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting and soon fall for one another. Others in the cast are Reno Wilson, Nyambi Nyambi, Katy Mixon, and Swoosie Kurtz.
The new sitcom debuted to a 3.9 rating in the prized 18-49 demographic and 12.2 million total viewers. That was enough to tie with NBC’s The Event for second place in the demo and have the second most number of viewers.

Historically, the CBS sitcoms who get the post-Two and a Half Men timeslot have done very well. CBS has high expectations however and has ended up cancelling several sitcoms that performed okay on this night. While the sitcom has good initial numbers, it’s not a positive sign that Mike & Molly lost 20% of the lead-in’s demo audience. Last year, Big Bang Theory was building on the lead-in and frequently outperformed Men in the demo.
There was a loss of about 7% of the audience midway through the Mike & Molly first episode so its seems likely those people won’t be back next week. It remains to be seen how many people will. This is a show whose fate will likely be decided over the next several weeks. Right now, things could go either way. Some critics and viewers have wondered how long it will be before the show runs out of material.
What do you think? Is Mike & Molly worth watching? Did you find the fat jokes offensive? Would you cancel or keep it?

PLEASE DONT CANCEL THIS SHOW……YOU HAVE ALREADY TAKEN AWAY TOO MANY GOOD SHOWS AWAY…This is a nice comedy about people who meet and the toughness of getting to know each other and add on top of that the fact that a person is over-weight (which is a common thing in this country). I think alot of people are in this same situation. Hence “situation comeday”….We, at our house love this show. Please don’t disappoint us AGAIN by canceling yet another show we love.
I love this show. I started watching when that bad article from Marie Claire came out so I decided to check it out. I have to say its funny, sweet, and cute. I hope this stays on for a long time
“TEN HOT *******.
Uh, yes. That’s what one of two male characters said last night. (Monday December 6, 2010)
I just started watching Mike and Molly and I love it!
Reality, med drama, cop drama, psychic paranormal= CRAP! CRAP! CRAP! CRAP! I say Mike and Molly stay. THANK YOU CHUCK LORRE AND CO. for being the the only people in the industry with a brain! and keep the comedy coming.
This show is such a breathe of fresh air compared to the gang buster reality shows YUCK to them! ! ! It is about time we see some real people, in real life jobs that may not be the “Run Way” types enjoying life to the fullest. I really love watching this show every week and hope they stay on for a long time, go Mike and Molly you guys make my week, keep it up. Jo
Caught this show almost by accident while staying in a hotel….just loved it. While the scenario is stagy…why wouldn’t it be..its a show, the characters come over as sympathetic and true to life. Maybe not a suitable show for early evening…but certainly watchable later…
For some reason I really l ike this show and I think the characters are very likeable. I’m leaning toward watching this one over Two and a Half Men which is getting very tiresome.
I love this show. There are many shows on TV that are (in my opinion) far worse than Mike and Molly. I would hate to see this one pulled.
I love the show! Funniest show since King of Queens went off the air. I agree that the writers could forego on some of the fat humor. The characters are funny just as they appear…disfunctional and functional familys and friends in a couple’s life. I get away from FarmTown for only that show. Keep it on and let go of some of the (not all) weight jokes. Cause THAT’s Life.
I LOVE this show… I’m always excited for Monday night@ 8:30 to get here!!! Please keep it!!!
I LOVE this show. It reminds me alot of my boyfriend and I. After college, I am going to be a teacher and he is going to be a cop. We both enjoy watching this show together and always find something that relates to our relationship. We have only been dating for a couple months now. I feel that this show could be around for a long time, depending on the number of viewers of course. Because the show started out at the beginning of a relationship, it will be very easy to come up with new material each week.… Read more »
I love this show, the writing is great, the actors are excellent, i like all of them. I record this show everyweek. My whole family enjoys this show. I do laugh out load at the jokes and the physical humer that they do. Like when Molly coughed up the hot cookies. This is my favorite now, i am so tiered of reality shows, and no humor on tv, keep this one on please.
I LOVE this show…I hope they keep this on..most shows they take off the air and I am looking for a FUNNY show and not a reality show!!!
I love it because of that reason, I too am looking for a FUNNY show that’s not a reality show. It has everything thats funny to me. Molly is great, then there is her pot head sister, her crazy loose mother, & her wisecracking boyfriend. That is cast of characters that would have to be a little “Inappropriate”. “Teens are still awake at 9:30…” I so hate it when people comment on what they regard as IMPRESSIONABLE. Impressionable is when you smoke pot in front of your teenager or, worse yet – with them. If they see it on TV… Read more »
This show had some very adult humor that is fine for HBO or Showtime. For a major television station I felt it was inappropriate. Some teens are awake and watching television at 9:30pm and they are quite impressionable. The marijuana scene was irresponsible for the networks to air at any hour.
Bill Cosby had it soooo right. His humor was magnificent and safe to view for audiences of all ages at anytime!
If it’s too much for you, then don’t watch but don’t kill it for the rest of us.
Absolutly love this show!!!!If its too much for some people change it!!!You see and hear worse on the news.
I take it you are not much of a tv watcher if you think this show is inappropriate for young children. With the exception of the marijuana I think it is a very enjoyable well written show. As far as I am concerned, 75 percent of tv shows on network tv are inappropriate for young children. This show is refreshing.
