Fans of the Motive TV show won’t find the series on the ABC schedule this summer. The US network has decided to drop the Canadian police drama after two seasons.
Motive revolves around a strong-willed Vancouver detective (Kristin Lehman) who’s also a single mom. At the start of each episode, viewers are shown the killer and victims. As the criminal investigation progresses, details of what led to the crime are revealed via flashbacks. The rest of the cast includes Louis Ferreira, Lauren Holly, Roger Cross, Brendan Penny, and Cameron Bright.
Produced in Canada, ABC licensed the show to air in the US during the summer months. Though it has some devout fans, the series’ ratings were pretty poor. The first season attracted an average of a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.96 million viewers. Last summer’s second season drew a 0.8 rating with 4.07 million.
While ABC has “cancelled” the series here in the States, the show will continue to air in Canada. It was renewed for a third season in May 2014 and those episodes are currently running on CTV. The network has just announced that Motive has been picked up for a fourth season and will resume production in the fall.
It is possible that another US channel could pick up the series since licensing a show costs much less than producing original programming of their own. Cable channel ION picked up imports The Listener and Flashpoint after they were dropped by NBC and CBS respectively.

Very disappointed to see that Motive was cancelled on the US. Had not watched anything else with that concept before. Hope some other channel picks up season 3 & 4.
I became hooked with season one, followed season 2 and am trying to watch all of 3 but only found some , would prefer free viewing , am enrolled in netflix . They don’t have it yet
Very disappointed but a lot of good detective shows get cancelled I hope that Amazon, Netflix or ION or another channel picks this show up. A lot if good shows out of Canada.
Yes! I do not appreciate them cancelling a great show. I watch nearly all of the crime procedurals on all networks, and this one is fresh/unique and deserves life. I am watching online and waiting or season 4.

I looked forward to watching Motive every week and my only complaint was that their season was too short/too few episodes. This was a great new way to watch a crime show, very unique and of course ABC cancels all good show, and all they force us to watch are dumb shows like Bachelor and Mistresses etc. I am looking into buying the shows I like on DVD….
Please ION bring this show to the states. What great characters and actors. This was one of the best cop dramas ever.
I’m SO disappointed, because I loved that show. The characters were great, and Vancouver looked gorgeous: cool and dark and spooky. I would absolutely watch it on another channel! Unfortunately, the lone Canadian station from our cable provider is the CBC network. I’m hoping I can buy the DVD’s for seasons 3 (and 4) online. If not, hopefully I can just drive up there and buy them in person. I need to renew my passport anyway, now I have things I need besides Coffee Crisp, Canadian Kit Kat, and Elastoplast bandages!
We loved this show. A different concept and far more interesting than the beautiful people falling in love with each other show of Rookie Blue.

I really need someone to pick up this show… It was so different from any other show out there and I truly looked forward to always watching it the concept was amazing…. ION SHOULD PICK IT UP… I’ve watched The a Listener s couple of time but MOTIVE IS A WAY BETTER SHOW!!! Please do us all a favor and bring it back to the states!!!
I hope ION or some channel picks up Motive up. I loved this show and can’t believe it was canceled in the US. I will purchase the season from Canada if possible.

I loved this show from the first episode. If ION can carry Flashpoint and The Listener, then adding Motive to its roster should be no-brainer.
