While some shows are getting orders for additional episodes, Numb3rs has just had its number cut by CBS. How does this bode for the drama’s chances for a seventh season?
As Friday night viewers know, Numb3rs revolves around an FBI agent (Rob Morrow) and his genius brother (David Krumholtz) who helps solve cases with mathematics. The cast also features Judd Hirsch (as their father), Alimi Ballard, Dylan Bruno, Navi Rawat, Aya Sumika, and Peter MacNicol.
The series is currently in its sixth season, having debuted in January 2005. For the show’s entire run, it’s been a staple of CBS’ Friday night schedule in the 10pm position.
In its first season, Numb3rs averaged a 3.2 rating in the demo and 11.1 million viewers. In season two, the show’s ratings rose to an average rating of 3.3 and 11.7 million viewers. Overall viewership has dropped since then. Last season was watched by an average of 9.75 million and the demo was 2.2.

This season however has been a different story. Numb3rs’ numbers are way down. It’s fallen all the way down to a 1.7 rating in the all-important demo. Overall viewership has also dropped to an average of 7.9 million viewers.
If you look at these figures, it’s not hard to understand why CBS has decided to cut this season’s order from 22 to 16 episodes. In addition, the network already has a couple other dramas that can take its place, including Flashpoint — a show that’s cheaper and already proven to work on Friday nights.
What does this mean for Numb3rs’ future and its chances for a seventh season? The episode cut doesn’t mean anything in itself but the ratings that caused it certainly do. The show is already in syndication and, now in its sixth year, the show is quite difficult to produce. Unless the ratings return to their previous level, the show will surely be cancelled.
What do you think? Would you be sorry to see the show cancelled or would you like to watch a seventh season?

I HATE REALITY SHOWS! If CBS keeps showing reality shows instead of creative drama, I will stay on cable channels…which is where I am at 90% of the time anyway.
I think one of the reasons the numb3rs are down is because this show attracts techies and techies are not tied to a stupid one way television. They download the show from eztv or a similar site which is what I do. I’m a fan (62 year old female). This is the only show which encourages interest in math and the sciences. I would hate to see it go. I’m sure if the morons at the network checked the bittorrent site they would see an healthy fan base.
the show is awesome, especially since its filmed in los angeles, this out of all shows i can relate to, it would be a shame to cancel it, out of all shows my girlfriend records this is the one i really can sit down and watch with her, and the other shows are all the csi’s, ghost whispers, NUMBERS is #1 on my list, great actors, great story lines, keep it on CBS, for being a friday night and everyone going out partying the ratings are solid.
It behooves me why a show like Numbers should be canceled. Apparently a few viewers that have left the Numbers “watch” list have no idea how interesting the mathematical analysis of ALL things can be proven. Although I am in no means a math wizard, I do understand the meanings behind their analytical process. I am with most viewers that I am totally sickened by the TV reality shows which are stupid..stupid is as stupid does. These people that have the time and money to portray themselves as some one else or maybe a comic book character or whatever else… Read more »
Please do NOT cancel Numb3rs. There are so many of us still out there who like to watch actually T.V. shows & not “reality” T.V. There are so few good shows out there anymore and the networks don’t even give them half a chance most of the time. You get 2 or 3 episodes into a brand new show and in the blink of an eye it’s gone, why? Because it didn’t jump sky high in ratings in the first few weeks. When they have great shows that have been out there for more than a few seasons they need… Read more »
This is a great show. It has a nice mix
of action and family. It would be sad
to see it end.
I really hope CBS gives Numbers at least another season. It’s a great premise with fantastic writing. The cast has great chemistry. I’ve even adjusted to and now enjoy Nikki. I like the growth of the relationship between two brothers that grew up in two very different worlds. I like Larry’s quirky philosophical musings and even the development of Judd Hirsch’s character. There’s so much greatness in the show that I can’t really list it all here. It’s actually my favorite show!
Just watched the season finale not realizing it was, apparently, a series finale. Seems ridiculous to let it go. Good stories, great ensemble cast with very good, developed relationships between and among the characters (esp. father and sons). Little frustrating to see what kind of crap will replace an otherwise solid show. Didn’t even see this coming. Couple this with the curious story this week about “24’s” expected demise, and it seems we’ll be offered more mindless stuff.
“Numbers” shouldn’t be cancelled.
I started watching numb3rs late at night and I have learned to love the show. I have finallly gotten my husband to watch the show and he really enjoys it. In watching this March 12 2010 episode, I had a feeling this was a final episode. CBS, you would be making a great mistake in cancelling this show. I look forward to a Friday night with one of the most enjoyable shows on television. Keep the show on for a seventh season.
I like this show, it is very good. It doesn’t assume that it’s audience is dumb so it comes up with some complicated plot lines. I would be very sad to see it go. You are talking about ratings, I think that you saw a large drop in ratings once you brought Medium in to take the 9:00 p.m. time slot. Put Flashpoint (which is incredibly great!!) in that spot and you will have a strong 3 hour Friday night schedule. Or, place Flashpoint at 10:00 and Numbers at 9:00. That would also give you a strong Friday line up… Read more »
I have been a loyal fan since day one… but over the last two years the show has lost it’s edge. Alan has become to preachy / self righteous for every politically correct cause. Charley sounds bored / mechanical in describing the math behind the solutions… Don’s religous awakenings and subsequent re-enlightenment has been tedious to say the least. I loved the concept of this show… but I think it is one of those shows that far outlived the original concept of the creators… they had a good idea… but didn’t have enough back story to keep it alive… I… Read more »
I love this show so much. Hope they changes their mind & not cancel it.
Sorry about the typo in the third sentence. Should read “its.”
The problem the networks have is they continue to think cheap. I’m so sick of “reality” TV and all the idiots showing how stupid they are. This all got it’s start with the networks not want ing to pay writers their worth and “reality TV” was born. Just like Jay Leno was cheaper in the 10 PM time slot. How’d that work out for ya, NBC? NUMBERS Is creative, intelligent, moral, good guys over the bad guys, law and order, and promotes higher education. With the season finale, this evening, it’s pretty obvious it’s over. Reminds me of the old… Read more »
Keep Numbers on. Watch it every Friday.
