While some shows are getting orders for additional episodes, Numb3rs has just had its number cut by CBS. How does this bode for the drama’s chances for a seventh season?
As Friday night viewers know, Numb3rs revolves around an FBI agent (Rob Morrow) and his genius brother (David Krumholtz) who helps solve cases with mathematics. The cast also features Judd Hirsch (as their father), Alimi Ballard, Dylan Bruno, Navi Rawat, Aya Sumika, and Peter MacNicol.
The series is currently in its sixth season, having debuted in January 2005. For the show’s entire run, it’s been a staple of CBS’ Friday night schedule in the 10pm position.
In its first season, Numb3rs averaged a 3.2 rating in the demo and 11.1 million viewers. In season two, the show’s ratings rose to an average rating of 3.3 and 11.7 million viewers. Overall viewership has dropped since then. Last season was watched by an average of 9.75 million and the demo was 2.2.

This season however has been a different story. Numb3rs’ numbers are way down. It’s fallen all the way down to a 1.7 rating in the all-important demo. Overall viewership has also dropped to an average of 7.9 million viewers.
If you look at these figures, it’s not hard to understand why CBS has decided to cut this season’s order from 22 to 16 episodes. In addition, the network already has a couple other dramas that can take its place, including Flashpoint — a show that’s cheaper and already proven to work on Friday nights.
What does this mean for Numb3rs’ future and its chances for a seventh season? The episode cut doesn’t mean anything in itself but the ratings that caused it certainly do. The show is already in syndication and, now in its sixth year, the show is quite difficult to produce. Unless the ratings return to their previous level, the show will surely be cancelled.
What do you think? Would you be sorry to see the show cancelled or would you like to watch a seventh season?

PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL NUMB3RS. We’ve seen the commercials for Flashpoint and will not watch it. Programming for Friday night is absolutely awful EXCEPT for Numb3rs. Granted the DA girlfriend for Don is a major negative on the show but the rest of the cast works well together and we really enjoy them. It will be a great loss.
I liked the show better before the guys girlfriend is now also this “math expert”. Also I like the dad and they seem to be saying he’s gotta move out. It won’t work out if they do that, or even say that. Too many changes, look back at when the ratings were high, then figure out all the stuff you added that didn’t work
Keep Numbers!
I don’t want to see numbers cancelled, it is awesome show. I have been watching since it came out and I will continue to watch it. I am getting tired of seeing my favorite shows get cancelled.
The people at CBS are a bunch of idiots if they cancel this show — we have never missed an episode –ever !!! Thanks for your stupid mistake!!!!!!
I love NUMB3RS and watch it every week. I agree with Margaret that Flashpoint and NUMB3RS would make an awesome lineup. I don’t watch the other shows before it. If NUMB3RS goes away on Friday nights so will my CBS viewing.
Numbers is a great show that made a difference to students’ attitudes toward math. They could see how math can be helpful in many ways. I love the show and watch every week. Flashpoint was not able to hold my interest. Maybe it was too contrived. I enjoyed Friday evening television since Numb3rs was in the line up. I can always rent a movie, I guess.
Numb3rs is the only thing really worth watching on Friday nights… I don’t watch the two shows before it. Right now CBS has at least one show I watch every night and if Numb3rs goes I’m going to have to find something else to watch. It’s smart, fun and well written and there should be more on like it, not less.
ps. Why not have more commercials to advertise NUMB3RS, like during NCIS?
Please keep NUMB3RS. Just get rid of Nikki.
My husband, a math teacher, and I love the show. He frequently discusses with his students the mathematical applications utilized on the show. I love exposure to the math as well as the relevant social issues presented – both in a very entertaining manner. Certainly the value of such a program is much greater than what typically “sells” advertisements, which is a sad commentary on our nation’s viewing habits, I think.
It would be ashame to loose such an original and bright show, with some intellect.
Please keep numbers, both my wife and I love this show.
keep numbers great show
Keep Numbers! Flashpoint and Numbers what a line up!!!
We love Numbers. My husband and i watch it every Friday. SO SAD.
Exactly, Margaret!!!! Keep both Numbers & Flashpoint!
