After endless commercials during the Olympics and lots of print ads, NBC’s Parenthood has debuted. The show has experienced several bumps on its journey to primetime but now it’s finally here and NBC has high hopes for the series. Will it be a hit?
Parenthood revolves around the extended and very colorful Braverman family of Northern California. The large cast includes Lauren Graham, Peter Krause, Craig T. Nelson, Bonnie Bedelia, Mae Whitman, Miles Heizer, Erika Christensen, Sam Jaeger, Dax Shepard, Joy Bryant, Monica Potter, Sarah Ramos, and Max Burkholder.
Last night’s premiere debuted to an average of 8.1 million viewers with a 3.1 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic. That put Parenthood in second place in total viewers (behind The Good Wife) but in first place in the demo. There was also very little erosion of the audience during the course of the episode.
While it’s positive that Parenthood won its timeslot in the demo, the numbers are surely not as good as NBC was hoping for, especially considering all of the promotion. Still, considering the state of the rest on NBC’s schedule, this should be considered a victory for the ailing peacock network.
As per usual, we’ll have to see how many viewers return week after week to know if Parenthood has a real chance at survival. For now, things look positive.
What do you think? Is Parenthood worth watching or are you changing the channel? Cancel or keep it?

Actually really liked Parenthood – thank goodness for DVR as I am BIG fan of Good Wife and especially WHITE COLLAR on USA (yummy). But definately worth taping. Will make sure to keep watching!
Keep it. It’s a show I can actually watch with my wife and still like it. I like Craig T. Nelson and I liked the family as a whole. Good acting from good actors is not something that comes along everyday. Parenthood really impressed me.
It’s a keeper! Really people? There is so much bad stuff on tv and this show looks like it is going to be really good! Please do not even THINK of cancelling such a well-rounded, relateable show NBC!!!!
Keep it, but add more comedy to it and go away from the movie!!!
I think even if the show was terrible (which it wasn’t) You spent money making a couple episodes, air them and see if people like it. Let then characters develop. This show is a hell of a lot more relateable then some of the other crap shows you still churn out.
Keep it! I want to see how they develop the story lines of Sara her dating and her kids and the Julia story line with her little girl and her workaholic persona. I anticipate this show developing much like The Waltons, Huxtables or Salingers in Party of Five. This is a family we can grow with. NBC don’t jump the Shark on this one.
I was apprehensive about ” Parenthood” . Apprehensive because of the star studded cast. Much like feature films with a blockbuster cast. SO excited to see all the BIG names it must be fantastic! Then you go see it { i.e. “He’s just not that into You”, “Valentines Day “} and you are left feeling underwhelmed. NOT THE CASE ! I loved this premiere. I am so already drawn in . I want to know more about these characters this family. Much like Modern Family its very much a family that is current and believable ! Lauren Graham, Craig T.… Read more »
I usually love them or hate them right away. With this one, I’ll need to see another episode or two before determining completely. It was hard to get into, but I believe in giving shows a chance before pulling them.
KEEP IT!!! For sure!
i can’t believe we’re having this conversation after O N E episode—
KEEP IT!!!
I completely 100% agree with the persons comment above me
KEEP IT!!! FOR GOD’S SAKE, NBC, GIVE THINGS A CHANCE!!! YOU HAVE AN AMAZING CAST. GIVE US TIME TO GET TO KNOW THEM AND LOVE THEIR CHARACTERS! 1 HR IS HARDLY ENOUGH. YOU GIVE UP TO EASILY AND JUST KEEP WASTING MONEY! WASN’T CONAN’S DEAL LESSON ENOUGH? HOW MUCH MORE MONEY DO YOU HAVE TO LOSE? YOU’VE CANCELED GREAT SHOWS AND KEPT THE CRAP? WHOSE PANEL OF JUDGES ARE YOU LISTENING TOO? IF YOU WANT TO BE #1 AGAIN….REMEMBER THIS “IF IT AIN’T BROKE, DON’T FIX IT!”
ROME WASN’T BUILT IN A DAY!
Keep it…believable characters played by talented actors. A bit jumpy in the plot, but there’s plenty to develop as the audience helps shape the dominance and direction of characters through feedback. I like where this show might be going.
A definite keeper…but working hard to live up to the Olympic ad hype may be it’s undoing if a failed venture.
A highlight for NBC.
I’ve seen worse 🙂
