NBC has decided to yank their freshman sitcom Perfect Couples from the schedule after April 7th. It’ll be replaced by The Paul Reiser Show on Thursday nights. Does this mean that Perfect Couples is canceled and gone for good?
Perfect Couples revolves around three young couples. Dave (Kyle Bornheimer) and Julia (Christine Woods) are the “everyday couple,” who are messed up in all the “normal” ways. Vance (David Walton) and Amy (Mary Elizabeth Ellis) are the high-passion, high-drama couple. Rex (Hayes MacArthur) is a reformed party guy and Leigh (Olivia Munn) is a self-anointed relationship guru who considers it her duty to mold the other couples in their image.
The NBC sitcom has been struggling in the ratings from the beginning. The network gave it viewers a sneak peak in December and that generated a terrible 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 3.56 million viewers. A month later, the second episode brought a mediocre 2.1 rating and 4.15 million. The numbers quickly started falling and the latest episode hit a low of a 1.2 rating.
The whole season of Perfect Couples currently averages a 1.5 rating in the demo and just 3.27 million viewers. It’s the lowest-rated scripted series on the network by far and even The Cape has a better season average. Bornheimer has committed to a new FOX pilot while Walton has signed on for a new NBC one.
So, no, NBC has not cancelled Perfect Couples officially, there are many very strong indications that it won’t be back next season. NBC has no incentive to bring it back and even cast one of the sitcom’s actors in one of their new shows.
Right now, it looks like there will be four unaired episodes of Perfect Couples. They may or may not see the light of day at a later date.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see Perfect Couples go? Do you think that it still has a chance to return for a second season?
The show was as funny as anything I watch, close to How I Met Your Mother. Surprised the feeling is that Paul Reiser will draw better ratings. Hard to argue with the fact it is the lowest rated scripted show on TV, but sometimes what you’re up against has as much to do with that then the quality of the show itself. Bring it back after Reiser show bombs….
NOOOOO DON’T LET PERFECT COUPLES GO!! It’s smart and fresh -this sucks!! NBC finally gets a new, good show and it’s getting ditched… ugh.
This was a great show! I loved it, and my fiancee and I loved to watch it together. So lame!
This show is smart, original, and hilarious. I cant believe its being canceled. Then again it is smart and witty, so most of america doesnt get it!
Perfect Couples’ writers actually exert their brains to come up with refreshingly original, clever humor in this show, contrary to the lazy, mail-it-in slop we have been getting from 30 Rock, etc. The highly-talented actors are Perfect, creating distinctly fascinating characters in all their various nuerosis, mistaken thinking, vanities, insecurities and embarrassments that hit close to home for most Couples. Producers need to appeal to viewers who crave above mediocre laughs. We are not all beer-guzzling, Cheeze-Whiz spreading sub-intellect grads from the Jerry Springer Show.
This sucks. Me and my wife really enjoy this show. I wish I could write to the people that decide this stuff. They would probably point to nielson ratings, but I’d like to point to the fact that it got jammed between 2 popular shows that are likely dvr’d by most. I still haven’t locked it in on my dvr. I think it’s bc they moved it around a little during the season. Therefore never really giving it a chance to be accurately Nielson’d. I guess I’ll buy the dvds and put them on the shelf next to Arrested Development… Read more »
They need to renew it! There are too few funny shows on t.v. and this was one of them. I was surprised at how funny it is since so many shows are crap and reality tv. It was very witty and I agree they had great chemistry together. They dont give proper time for good shows to find their audience anymore. Very sad.
That show was the next Friends, I can’t believe it won’t be back on! Thursdays were finally getting better after the mildly funny but apparent racism on Outsourced. Just promote it properly. It’s a race for Happy Endings, Traffic Light and Perfect Couples… who will make it to next season!? My vote is bring Perfect Couples on for season two.
I love this show! It is so funny and gets better every week!
Great show! I’m really disappointed! I’m 29 and felt a big connection to the show and its characters. I think news is still spreading – I’ve come across several people who’ve mentioned that they’ve seen the show and will watch it more. Come back! Come back!
I love this show! It’s the funniest one in the line up. Yes, let’s cancel a show with talented comedic actors and awesome episodes and put lame ass Paul Reiser in it’s place. Nobody will watch that show. Bring Perfect Couples back!!!
TERRIBLE that this show is being canceled!!! & for a PAUL REISER show??? WTF?? What rock did NBC scrape him from under? Perfect Couples is smart & witty – much better than 30 Rock has been lately, which I normally love but has fallen off this season. The Office has been hit or miss & the rest of the lineup is just plain stupid. As usual, with idiotic shows like American Idol, Basketball Wives & Outsourced – which is basically just moronic racism – it’s no wonder a good show like Perfect Couples is being canceled.
This show always gives me belly laughs. The characters have solid chemistry, and each one brings a different kind of funny to the table. Too bad to see it go.
So sad!!! I love this show. It’s so clever and suprisingly realistic. Why does everything good get cancelled???
That stinks! I loved that show. Being it back! I hate reality shows.
agreed. i love it
Bad news. I guess it was inevitable though. It’s not trashy reality TV, so no will watch it.
