Much to the dismay of the show’s loyal followers, The Unit was cancelled by CBS in May. The series’ viewership had declined in its later years but, despite being preempted several times, still attracted 9.67 million viewers in season four.
The Unit was supposedly being seriously considered to continue in first-run syndication but the deal didn’t work out, likely because of production costs. Sadly, while the military drama and Dennis Haysbert, Regina Taylor, Robert Patrick, and Scott Foley will be around in syndication for years to come, we won’t be seeing season five of The Unit.
It turns out that the writers had a full plan for year five which Executive Producer Shawn Ryan was expecting to be the show’s last. He pitched the storyline ideas to the CBS execs but ultimately they weren’t interested.
At the recent TCA press tour, Ryan shared with The Futon Critic what would have happened. He said, “It was going to be a whole new show in the sense that we were going to be training some young people, Bob was going to be training some people for a whole new organization. Jonas was finally going to be seeing his run end.”

Ryan continued, “The final season was going to be, I figured the fifth season was going to be the last… It was going to be a long, sort of final mission for Jonas. He’s not medically cleared, Mac has to go in and sort of change the medical records so that Jonas can keep on [going on missions]. We had a whole thing planned, it was going to be good.”
Of the cancellation, Ryan points to CBS’ last-minute decision to save NBC’s discarded Medium series. If things had been reversed and The Unit “had been owned by Paramount and Medium had been owned by 20th Century Fox, we’d be making the fifth season of The Unit right now. I don’t know how else to say that.”

Please can anyone tell me if Molly came back to Jonas?
I didn’t know about The Unit until it came back on the air a few years ago. It was a great series. The last show I saw was with Molly Blaine leaving and I don’t know if they ever got back together. Please put the 5th season on dvd or let me know if The final one I saw was the finale. Please, please, please!!!
I have watched all four seasons in about 1 month and a half! And up to this day I have never seen a show that is as cool and exciting as The Unit! Please bring it back! I can’t wait to see season 5 ( if ever it comes out)! This show is totally worth it! I have spent soo much time watching these shows and I press repeat on my favorite ones! The way that season 4 ends is disapointing due to the simple reason that I want to see MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please bring back the unit or at least put season 5 out on DVD!! I was very disappointed with how it ended I want to see this show go until there are no more ideas left!! It is truly a great show much better than CSI and law and order but yet they still are on and its so repetitive this show is so unique please bring it back!!!

PPLLLEEEAASSE bring the unit back! It was the best show ever filmed! I was immensely disappointed when it ended! Why is it that all of the best shows seem to end the most abruptly, and the ridiculously stupid ones continue on and on?
I vote bring the series back and not just for season 5, I want to see it go farther all the way to season 10. I bought all four seasons and enjoyed watching them, I’ll do the same for every series after so bring it back!

Please, give us a season 5! This series really needs an end, which fans can live with. Maybe it could work with a crowd-founding?! That would be really awesome!
wow really…. I am highly disappointed that a network wouldnt pick up another season of “the unit”. I cought it a few times on tv scanning threw channels and had to see what the back ground of this series was all about. after watching all four seasons at work many of the people that came threw my office have found them selfs submerged in this series, as well as my self. I personally would rather watch this then 3/4 of the reality tv on television now. I wish you would at least have a final season, even if something bad… Read more »
The Unit became a part of my life and now I feel that I can’t breathe without this show! Please allow Season 5 to be played out, I’m feeling LOST! OMG I purchased all 4 Seasons and in desperate need of more! If they can bring back the Game, on sure you can bring back The Unit! The writers on this show were Phenomenal and the Actors and Actresses were very convincing! Please find a way to work out your differences and bring back our HEROES!!!!;-)
