ABC won’t be making its official announcement until tomorrow but the axe has already fallen for midseason’s The Unusuals.
The dramady revolves around a dysfunctional but effective group of New York City cops. The series features the talents of Amber Tamblyn, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, Joshua Close, Monique Gabriela Curnen, Kai Lennox, Terry Kinney, Adam Goldberg, Ryan O’Nan, Ian Kahn, Kat Foster, Heather Burns, Robert Funaro, and George Aloi.
The ABC show debuted on April 8th to a disappointing 6.83 million viewers and a 2.1/6 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers fell to 6.01 million and a 1.8/5. The network tried a different timeslot but the numbers were worse and subsequently fell to a terrible 4.74 million and a 1.4/4.
Though ABC really wanted to find a new cop drama, it became pretty clear that this one wasn’t going to be it. The network has opted to cancel The Unusuals rather than order a second year.
Their official schedule will be announced tomorrow but show creator Noah Hawley has already been informed that the show is dead.
He twittered, “Friends, just heard The Unusuals will not be back for a second season. Thanks for all your amazing support.” He later wrote, “It’s a tough loss.”
There are four episodes left in season one and ABC will begin airing them next week, on May 27th.

What a surprise- anything quirky and unique ABC dumps. I guess they can all go and eat some pie at the Pie Hole since anything original is always dumped by ABC. They really need a better marketing team- I did not see one ad for The Unusuals- I read about it- that is the only reason I knew it was on and started watching.
Loved this show. Witty and smart – will miss it. What’s the point in watching anything new on TV anymore???
Stupid stupid ABC! This is a show that I actually enjoy watching and now it’s canceled. What a bummer! 🙁
Way to go ABC – first you sucked me and then cancelled The Nine, then again with Daybreak and now The Unusuals – when will I learn to stop watching new ABC shows when they are never given a chance? Feel free to bring back all your crappy sitcoms though.
Not surprising that The Unusuals was canceled. Following the same ill fate of its former timeslot occupant, Life on Mars (a much better show with higher ratings that should have been saved IMO), this show was doomed from the beginning. The fan complaints never change though: ABC didn’t promote it; ABC put it in a bad timeslot; ABC cancels good shows prematurely, blah blah blah. Ad nauseam.
Maybe the humour is a little too quirky. Northern Exposure suffered a similar fate. I thought the show was well written and acted and a cut above the usual cops, crime and enormous amounts of gore offerings we have had from the major producers of late,
I loved this show so much, too bad its cancelled…
Somehow I knew
This was a great show. It was always interesting and always made you want to watch more. And now it’s cancelled. What a bummer.
Yet another Sports NIght: ABC cancels a show because they don’t know how to develop the audience. This and Castle are the only shows that I make sure to be home for. I’ve never been sorrier to get a night back. I really felt like this show brought back some of the spirit of Hill Street Blues, but with a nicely surreal and funny twist. It is so much more entertaining than any other cop show in the last 20 years. I hope this gets a DVD release. I’ve already watched the available episodes twice on my DVR and would… Read more »
I am so disappointed!!! My husband and I really liked this show. The characters were great and the stories were fun. I am really going to miss it!
ABC should have given this one more time. I really enjoyed this show. The subtle weirdness made it something really different.
Really bad–and sad–decision. So much of the same out there and they cancel one of the few fresh ideas.
I am so sad about this show – my husband and I really loved it. I don’t know why people weren’t watching this show – it is so smart and funny 🙁
I love this show! I can’t believe ABC is not taking a chance to renew this one for a second season. A fantastic cast. ABC should not be so quick to drop this one. You have one of the finest actor’s, Jeremy Renner, appearing on one of your shows. You should take another look at this and see where to tweek it to make it more appealing to the audience instead of letting it go. Very disappointed in ABC.
