ABC won’t be making its official announcement until tomorrow but the axe has already fallen for midseason’s The Unusuals.
The dramady revolves around a dysfunctional but effective group of New York City cops. The series features the talents of Amber Tamblyn, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, Joshua Close, Monique Gabriela Curnen, Kai Lennox, Terry Kinney, Adam Goldberg, Ryan O’Nan, Ian Kahn, Kat Foster, Heather Burns, Robert Funaro, and George Aloi.
The ABC show debuted on April 8th to a disappointing 6.83 million viewers and a 2.1/6 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers fell to 6.01 million and a 1.8/5. The network tried a different timeslot but the numbers were worse and subsequently fell to a terrible 4.74 million and a 1.4/4.
Though ABC really wanted to find a new cop drama, it became pretty clear that this one wasn’t going to be it. The network has opted to cancel The Unusuals rather than order a second year.
Their official schedule will be announced tomorrow but show creator Noah Hawley has already been informed that the show is dead.
He twittered, “Friends, just heard The Unusuals will not be back for a second season. Thanks for all your amazing support.” He later wrote, “It’s a tough loss.”
There are four episodes left in season one and ABC will begin airing them next week, on May 27th.

I loved this show! It was smart, funny and different! I am tired of shows coming out and only a few episodes being shown and the viewer is left hanging.
I am VERY sad, I finally found a show I liked and you guys cancel it. The Unusuals was a clever and funny cop show! What are you guys thinking canceling the show.
Dis-apointed and angry at the ABC network.
I am very mad that they are not bringing this show back for another season. I went out of my to watch this show…finding it on TV or watching it on the website when I missed it. It was a great cop show!
to bad, i guess it was to good for the network to consider, maybe they do not consider the tv watcher intelligent and witty enough to enjoy such a program, not enough of us to invest, i guess crap sells better…………….
This makes me ANGRY! Why do these TV. Networks keep bringing new series out, and then cancel it after the first season..We get all involved then this happens..I am tired of this..I wish they would leave the series alone..I really enjoyed this series…very sad 🙁
I concur with most comments lamenting the passing of this promising show and agree that its concellation is reflective of the “dumbing down” factor in television today. The Unusuals had the potential of being in the same league as Hill Street Blues and Homicide: Life on the Street (perhaps the greatest police tv drama of all time).
Why DID THIS AWSOME SHOW CANCELL!!!! ARRRRGGG! Even if there were not as many people watching it as they should. There are ones that DID WATCH it WANT to SEE MORE OF it!!!!!!! Do not cancell. :,,,( There are people who want to see some more of the Unusuals:(
Why oh why do they not stick with a show and give it time to find an audience. this was such a well written, funny show. I looked forward to it every week and I will miss the characters that never really had a chance to develop… Big mistake ABC and America for not supporting shows that are different… Here you have Castle which did make the cut and it is ok, but so predictable… When will the two main stars act on the sexual tension between them….. boring…. same ole, same ole. For my money the Unusuals, was just… Read more »
This totally frikkin’ blows, I was hoping to see this back in the fall lineup. this was a nice breakaway show, kinda reminded me of Hill Street Blues, same blend of humor. damn this really irks me. If it wasn’t for LOST, I’d boycott ABC on this. DAMN!!!, this really does irk me.
Maybe one day there will be a commercial “IQTV” station that has gritty and witty, well written shows and doesn’t cater only to the lowest common denominator of sub prime couch potato. It would put together a decent evening of TV that doesn’t require you to have, or to continualy surf 100+ stations in order to find something realy worth watching like “The Unusuals”….Heck, some politicians would kill to have even one million people watch and listen to them….Networks bite, PC Niche TV anyone?
The last time a great show like this got the axe was when CBS canceled (twice) “Due South”..a quirky, well written and acted dramedy. At least someone else picked up “Due South” in syndication and it lasted another three seasons…maybe the same will happen with “The Unusuals” We can only hope! TNT…or USA…are you listening?
i loved this show. too bad abc didnt promote it much and the time slot didnt help i always watched it online! so sad to hear this… this show was great!
Typical of these TV networks to cancel a show with any originality. A few million of us thought this show was interesting enough to watch. How long are we going to let them saturate our evenings with stupid reality shows? I wish I could say I can’t believe it, but really, it comes as no surprise. I’ll wait with baited breath for another season of Dancing with the Stars..so I can turn the TV off.
i cannot believe i finally found a great show just to see it cancelled. Everytime, a great show comes on it does not make the cut. Shame on ABC
damn i just started watching this…….. shame
