In the past several days, ABC has given out full season orders to four of the network’s new shows. Comedies Cougar Town, The Middle, and Modern Family have all received orders for nine additional episodes, bringing each to a total of 22 episodes for the season. ABC has also given FlashForward an order for 12 additional installments making for 25 episodes.
Of course, these shows could still be cancelled. However it does mean that, for now, the network has faith in them. Realistically, The Middle’s ratings haven’t been all that great and FlashForward has seen significant drops each week. It’s certainly not unheard of for a network to cancel episode orders (see Southland).
The freshman shows that, thus far, have been left out in the cold by ABC are…
Eastwick — There’s been nothing magical about this show’s ratings. It’s been losing viewers every week and last Wednesday, its numbers fell to a terrible 5.28 million viewers and an 1.8/5 in the demo. Things aren’t expected to get any better tonight. Is Eastwickcursed to be the first ABC show to be cancelled this season? Looks likely. Show support.

the forgotten — Fans may have grieved over the loss of Christian Slater’s My Own Worst Enemy but they seem to be ignoring his new series. Last night’s episode fell to a record low in viewers and lost 45% of the Dancing with the Stars lead-in audience. It’s also performing very poorly in the demographic. Show support.
Hank — This traditional sitcom is currently the weakest link in ABC’s Wednesday night comedy block though not much worse than The Middle in total viewers. The 18-49 demographic numbers tell a different story however. Last week, Hank only brought in a 1.6/5, putting it in fourth place in the demo. This sitcom also has a chance of being the first cancellation of the season.
Shark Tank — This reality show debuted early and was kept on the schedule for Fall. The series was performing poorly in the Summer months and now, leading into the successful Dancing with the Stars, it isn’t doing any better. Last night’s installment was in fourth place for the timeslot in both total viewers and the demographic. There’s supposedly one episode left and to date ABC hasn’t ordered any more. Show support.
Of course, older shows aren’t safe from the chopping block either. Castle hasn’t been doing very well and will have a tougher time once Dancing with the Stars is gone. Ugly Betty returns on Friday and doesn’t have an easy road ahead.
What do you think? Are any of these shows worth watching and worth saving?
Oops, sorry… in the previous post, I was referring to “Defying Gravity” , not “Hank”.
In regards to Ray’s comments, I’m not sure where you are getting your information on cancelled series. Like the admin said, its not cancelled. Rather its just off the schedule, ABC let it run all but its last episode (though I read that the “last” episode in Canada was really just an extra episode.) The series is produced in Canada for both Canadian and U.S. and other foreign markets, therefore its continued existence will only partially depend on ABC’s use of that series. Additionally, this is another “cheaper” series for ABC than many others, so that as well will count… Read more »
whatever happened to “I Survived A Japanese Game Show”? Was It Cancelled?
“Hey” ABC I don’t know how you get your rating stats if its shows watched at the time they air I hate to inform you but A lot of us have these thing’s called Tivo and DVR”s and may not watch a show on Wed til Sat. so give them a chance !!!!!
ABC has offically laid Hank and Defying Gravity to rest. the shows have been cancelled
@Ray: They have not been cancelled (yet anyway).
Castle has to be saved. I personally like it and hate the fact ABC cancels their shows after ratings slip a little
Castle, the Forgotten, even Eastwick are a welcome change from the CSI and L & O franchise. Can’t we keep them all? Variety is what it’s all about!
Please, please, please do not cancel Castle. ABC has some real stinkers in a couple of real new ones but Castle & The Forgotten are excellent intelligent shows. The acting, the cast and the story lines are great. Please give these show a chance!!!!!!!!
I’m Pretty sure this will be Ugly Betty’s last season…
ABC isn’t as enthusiastic about it as they were in previous years..
Also, Betty shows no growth and she’s just a biytchy, nerdy girl imo..
Ugly Betty is worth saving and I am encouraged that it at least has a full season order. I’m not sure what their expectations are for it on Fridays, but its numbers which looked poor on Thursdays last year will hopefully look better on Fridays, so I’m rooting for it to at least retain its current audience size. Of course, Medium will probably still top the hour but at least Betty offers a more family-friendly alternative which may work. I expect Eastwick to be gone and Lost to go at 10pm Wednesdays in the spring so that the comedy block… Read more »
Oh, please, ABC, do not cancel Castle. It is so clever. The cast is wonderful – especially Nathan Fillion and Susan Sullivan. They each have perfect delivery. This is the only show I watch Monday evening so hoping it remains on the schedule.
Oh sure… I start getting into Castle and Shark Tank… and now they are in danger. And where in the heck is Better Off Ted? It was picked up, but it hasn’t been on yet. I figure that Women 25-49 MUST be ABC’s demos, because they are threathening to leave this 39-year-old male out in the cold. As someone who works in the television biz, these networks HAVE to get some guts and learn to stick with shows for an entire season or two before they expect a hit. I know that its been said before, but this “give it… Read more »
Save Shark Tank!!!!! I hope it at least returns mid-season or summer 2010. It’s SUCH a good show. Am I wrong, or did it perform very well this summer? Sure, it can’t compete against fall fare, but it’s cheap to make (thus, easily profitable, even with lower ratings).
Do NOT cancel Castle. I’m glad about Modern Family though.
I will really mad if something happens to Flash Forward, Cougar Town and Modern Family.
