In the past several days, ABC has given out full season orders to four of the network’s new shows. Comedies Cougar Town, The Middle, and Modern Family have all received orders for nine additional episodes, bringing each to a total of 22 episodes for the season. ABC has also given FlashForward an order for 12 additional installments making for 25 episodes.
Of course, these shows could still be cancelled. However it does mean that, for now, the network has faith in them. Realistically, The Middle’s ratings haven’t been all that great and FlashForward has seen significant drops each week. It’s certainly not unheard of for a network to cancel episode orders (see Southland).
The freshman shows that, thus far, have been left out in the cold by ABC are…
Eastwick — There’s been nothing magical about this show’s ratings. It’s been losing viewers every week and last Wednesday, its numbers fell to a terrible 5.28 million viewers and an 1.8/5 in the demo. Things aren’t expected to get any better tonight. Is Eastwickcursed to be the first ABC show to be cancelled this season? Looks likely. Show support.

the forgotten — Fans may have grieved over the loss of Christian Slater’s My Own Worst Enemy but they seem to be ignoring his new series. Last night’s episode fell to a record low in viewers and lost 45% of the Dancing with the Stars lead-in audience. It’s also performing very poorly in the demographic. Show support.
Hank — This traditional sitcom is currently the weakest link in ABC’s Wednesday night comedy block though not much worse than The Middle in total viewers. The 18-49 demographic numbers tell a different story however. Last week, Hank only brought in a 1.6/5, putting it in fourth place in the demo. This sitcom also has a chance of being the first cancellation of the season.
Shark Tank — This reality show debuted early and was kept on the schedule for Fall. The series was performing poorly in the Summer months and now, leading into the successful Dancing with the Stars, it isn’t doing any better. Last night’s installment was in fourth place for the timeslot in both total viewers and the demographic. There’s supposedly one episode left and to date ABC hasn’t ordered any more. Show support.
Of course, older shows aren’t safe from the chopping block either. Castle hasn’t been doing very well and will have a tougher time once Dancing with the Stars is gone. Ugly Betty returns on Friday and doesn’t have an easy road ahead.
What do you think? Are any of these shows worth watching and worth saving?
Leave Castle on the air. The cast is wonderful and it is such a fun show.
I LOVE Eastwick !!!!! If you cancel that show before it has a chance to make it’s mark… you might as well pull the plug on the whole network. Let the janitor turn off the lights when he walks out the door for the last time. Every network wants the big ratings so they can charge more for the commercial time. What these over paid dim wits, that run the networks, never seem to get, is that a very large portion of the viewing public has at least two DVRs … AND nobody is watching commercials anymore. So the advertisers… Read more »
I really enjoyed Eastwick. I think the show is quite funny. I think it would have done better in a different time slot though. I miss “Life on Mars” the most. That was an awesome show. I guess both of these will be One Season wonders that I have to order on DVD now. I like Castle as well and just watched it last night. Cougartown is really dumb if you ask me and I am a forty years old. Even if I was single, the character is not believable. This is why most of what I watch is on… Read more »
ABC is at it again. Cancel, cancel, cancel! Why do they even bother to make new shows?? Perhaps they could just replay Greys Anatomy and Dancing with the Stars over and over and over. I love Castle (great characters), Eastwick (different, fun), Flashforward (can’t wait to see it every week), the forgotten, Modern Family (hilarious), the Middle and Ugly Betty. Hank is terrible. Cougartown is stupid. Would not notice if it were to disappear even though I love Courtney. Remember, this is the network that cancelled Eli Stone, October Road, Dirty Sexy Money, Samantha Who and Pushing Daisies. And didnt… Read more »
Please keep The Forgotten!
I love Ugly Betty! It should returned. Also, I agree. Eastwick is better than most shows. It should return.
Please, Eastwick should stay! It’s a great show.
I love Eastwick!!! It’s definately better than 90% of their other shows! Without fail every good show they put out they have to cancel.
I hate ABC…EVERY single time I start watching one of their shows they cancel it….I really like the Forgotten and hope they don’t cancel…it if they do I will swear off every new show that put out…..they don’t even give these shows a chance…..
The forgotten … very good. an excellent written and acted show
Eastwick…horrible…cougar town…horrible….castle the only one in the bunch worth saving.
I only voted to save ‘The Forgotten’ above, it’s the best of a bad lot, don’t get me started on ‘Hank’, not to take the talent of Mr. Grammer away but unfortunately for him it’s too late, he will always be Frasier and be forever fighting against type. He should wait a while and do something completely different, stir it up a little or fade away into regularity…those are the options dude….
I am on the fence with ‘The Forgotten’, it has good bones but not the mass appeal, i.e it requires too much thought on the part of the audience, probably another example of a good show going down the Swanee at some point, regrettably… actually I think it’s the wrong vehicle for Christian Slater anyway, he needs to be in a non-ensemble cast…..
I never watched Eastwick for the simple reason that the plot lines aren’t sustainable, I am pretty sure this is a goner, which means that Jaime Ray Newman can forget her Australian gig and come back to Eureka! come on, can you feel it??!!
Castle is a good example of a guilty pleasure show, I think it should have an earlier time slot, the 2nd season story lines have actually been more intriguing than season 1, it would be a shame to lose it, the characters are starting to grow on me….
