Back when “Who Shot J.R.?” was sweeping the country, Larry Hagman decided he could use this phenomenon to play hardball and get a big pay raise on Dallas. It ended up working very well for him. More recently, Hagman was reportedly holding out for more money to secure his involvement in the new Dallas pilot that’s being shot for TNT. Things came down to the wire so that producers actually prepared two pilot scripts, one of which would have shown J.R. Ewing in flashbacks only, via footage from the original series.
Now, it appears Hagman is on board for the project, as are Patrick Duffy and and Linda Gray. The new Dallas series will revolve around conflict between John Ross (Josh Henderson), the son of Sue Ellen and J.R., and Christopher, the adopted son of Bobby and Pam. When we last saw the young men in the first reunion movie, they were getting along quite well. That doesn’t make for good drama of course and now apparently their relationship has gone south — at least in part because of a young beauty named Elena (Jordana Brewster). It’s unknown how involved the senior members of the family will be if the pilot gets picked up as a regular series.
Here’s the press release from TNT…
TNT’s Pilot of Updated “Dallas” to Feature Returns of Original Series Stars Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray
Cast of Younger Dallas Generation to Include Jordana Brewster and Josh HendersonThree iconic stars who played pivotal roles in the original version of Dallas have joined two next-generation talents in the cast for TNT’s pilot of an update of the famed series.
The original Dallas ran from 1978 to 1991 and followed the Ewing family of Southfork. The modern story of Dallas focuses on the Ewing offspring — J.R. Ewing’s son, John Ross, and the adopted son of Bobby and Pam Ewing, Christopher — as they clash over the future of the family dynasty.
The updated Dallas will include original series stars Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray. Hagman gained worldwide fame for his portrayal of oil baron J.R. Ewing. Gray played J.R.’s wife, Sue Ellen Ewing, while Duffy portrayed J.R.’s younger brother Bobby. In the pilot for the new Dallas, Josh Henderson (Desperate Housewives) will play John Ross. Jordana Brewster (Fast & Furious) will play Elena, who is involved in a love triangle with Christopher and John Ross.
Executive producer Cynthia Cidre, who wrote the acclaimed film The Mambo Kings and produced the TV series Cane, wrote the pilot for the new Dallas. The pilot script is based on characters created by David Jacobs. The updated version of Dallas comes to TNT from Warner Horizon Television. Michael M. Robin (The Closer) is the director and executive-producer for the pilot.

What do you think? Were you a fan of the original Dallas TV show? Does the new series interest you?
MEMORIES!!! My husband and I would put our boys to bed, then settle down to watch Dallas. Fun!! It would be great to bring the show back, but afraid it just won’t be the same. There could NEVER be another JR…….ha ha.
What about Pam, Lucy and Ray???? You just have to have them, too.
Good luck.
BRING IT ON!!! THIS COULD BE ANOTHER 10 PLUS YEAR RUN
i love the original TV series i cnt what to see the new DALLAS and big fan of DALLAS

I grew up with Dallas on every friday night could not wait for it to come on so i can watch it, I love the show and and I cant wait to see the new one on TNT I think it will do great, And I think Larry Hagman will still do a great job being JR Ewing… besides i am so tired of all of these damn reality shows, bring back some good soaps again even Knots Landing, Falcon Crest, and Dynasty I have watched them all and love them all but Dallas was the best…. the very best… Read more »
I loved the first series, I will definitiely watch and give it a chance. Hopefully it wont ruinthe franchise or be horrible like the new “Melrose Place”.. I would also be excited (prob more excited) for a Knots Landing re-make. I think that may be a better idea, give desperate housewives a run for the money.
I was a big fan of Dallas and now I’m so excited to hear that its coming back. I can’t wait?
Woo hoo!! I’m a huge fan of the show and was really excited to hear about the return of Dallas. It’s about time for a next generation show. Dang, they waited long enough. I was getting desperate for more Dallas, as I’m on the last season (14)of DVD’s now. Hope the new show has some good stories.
I loved watching Dallas. Didn’t really watch it when it first came on until after JR got shot. Then I watched it while I was growing up. Then probably 10 years later seen all the reruns. Now have the whole collection on DVD. Would love of Pam would come back and have the 4 some together again. To me that is what made Dallas the 4 of them. I hope they will turn it into a series since now that I am 47 there is not one show that I watch. The last one was Army Wive’s and now that… Read more »

I absolutely love the original Dallas series. I’m now watching it on DVD’s. The new series sounds very good. I just wish that the characters of Pam, Ray, Donna, and Lucy could also be brought back in addition to J.R., Bobby, and Sue Ellen.
I have always loved the Dallas TV show and now own all of the seasons, plus the JR Returns movie. I watch them daily. Am looking forward to the new Dallas.
I LOOOOOVE “DALLAS”!!!!!! This news was music to my ears! I have the original series on DVD, and when my boss at work called to tell me about this new show with the original characters, I was blown away! I have to say, I would love to see Victoria Principal come back as Pam to top it all off! And even Ken Kerchevel! But I will be anxiously awaiting this new series!
GREAT! The original series was great until the whole devil season. Then it was just plain strange. If they would’ve grown up the cast during the original series it would’ve kept interest. So better late than never. Hopefully it’s a keeper but if a single actor gets too greedy then it’s bound to fail. It needs to be a team effort.
Loved the original Dallas and the first reunion movey, but they are going to have there work cut for them because compared to today’s real life oil executives JR was a bloody Saint.
I am a big fan of dallas. i just finished watching season 14. LOVE THEM ALL. I am very excited and cant wait for Dallas the pilot. I would like to know day and month it will air.
@Rosa R. Contreras: They haven’t even started filming the pilot yet or committed to making a series.
