Back when “Who Shot J.R.?” was sweeping the country, Larry Hagman decided he could use this phenomenon to play hardball and get a big pay raise on Dallas. It ended up working very well for him. More recently, Hagman was reportedly holding out for more money to secure his involvement in the new Dallas pilot that’s being shot for TNT. Things came down to the wire so that producers actually prepared two pilot scripts, one of which would have shown J.R. Ewing in flashbacks only, via footage from the original series.
Now, it appears Hagman is on board for the project, as are Patrick Duffy and and Linda Gray. The new Dallas series will revolve around conflict between John Ross (Josh Henderson), the son of Sue Ellen and J.R., and Christopher, the adopted son of Bobby and Pam. When we last saw the young men in the first reunion movie, they were getting along quite well. That doesn’t make for good drama of course and now apparently their relationship has gone south — at least in part because of a young beauty named Elena (Jordana Brewster). It’s unknown how involved the senior members of the family will be if the pilot gets picked up as a regular series.
Here’s the press release from TNT…
TNT’s Pilot of Updated “Dallas” to Feature Returns of Original Series Stars Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray
Cast of Younger Dallas Generation to Include Jordana Brewster and Josh HendersonThree iconic stars who played pivotal roles in the original version of Dallas have joined two next-generation talents in the cast for TNT’s pilot of an update of the famed series.
The original Dallas ran from 1978 to 1991 and followed the Ewing family of Southfork. The modern story of Dallas focuses on the Ewing offspring — J.R. Ewing’s son, John Ross, and the adopted son of Bobby and Pam Ewing, Christopher — as they clash over the future of the family dynasty.
The updated Dallas will include original series stars Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray. Hagman gained worldwide fame for his portrayal of oil baron J.R. Ewing. Gray played J.R.’s wife, Sue Ellen Ewing, while Duffy portrayed J.R.’s younger brother Bobby. In the pilot for the new Dallas, Josh Henderson (Desperate Housewives) will play John Ross. Jordana Brewster (Fast & Furious) will play Elena, who is involved in a love triangle with Christopher and John Ross.
Executive producer Cynthia Cidre, who wrote the acclaimed film The Mambo Kings and produced the TV series Cane, wrote the pilot for the new Dallas. The pilot script is based on characters created by David Jacobs. The updated version of Dallas comes to TNT from Warner Horizon Television. Michael M. Robin (The Closer) is the director and executive-producer for the pilot.

What do you think? Were you a fan of the original Dallas TV show? Does the new series interest you?
i m very excited.over the past 5 years i have been collecing the dvd’s on season and am currently watching the 12th season.love it!!!!
John Ross and Christopher aren’t J.R. and Bobby’s only kids. J.R. has two more sons and a grandson, Bobby has another son, Lucas. Why not have Lucy finally happily married with kids and what about Gary and half brother Ray? You want good drama then bring back the whole family!
Well I grew up in that era and watched Dallas every Friday night was a big fan but ended very weird? I think the new episodes sound lame and come on not really much meat to the story line. Go back to the drawing board bring back Pam Victoria Principal. And maybe even Priscilla Presley and her blotched face lift and now you have some good ole drama. But the plot about John Ross and Christopher sounds boring and a flop! Always better to let things end. sorry like I said I was a fan but this sounds like maybe… Read more »
I agree with Jace. Bobby was brought back from the dead and was handled nicely in the script. The original cast had excellent chemistry, so why not continue with Pam, Ray, Cliff, Lucy and others who are available. This will assure you of renewed high ratings.
I absolutely love Dallas. I watched it when I was kid…I have 8 kids now, I would sit up all through the night nursing babies and taking care of sick babies, I got to watch Dallas all over again. I found the reruns! I loved it as much the second time as I did the first. I didnt know they were making this, please if anyone knows anything about when everything will start up, please email me.
Can’t wait….I will be watching for the show to start. that was real entertainment. todays reality shows are more scary than entertaining. a real turn-off.
Just heard about the new show, can’t wait huge fan and so are all my sisters.-
Can’t wait for the new show. I’m a huge fan. I have the first ten seasons and plan to get the rest. I’m wondering the actual date the show starts, haven’t heard.
can’t wait. I loved Dallas. However, I’m VERY disappointed that they didn’t get the original actors who played John Ross and Christopher to reprise their roles…come on wheres the loyality. I loved Omri (john ross) and Ilm sure he is free!!!
i never missed a episode of dallas & don’t intend to when the show finally comes back on.
dallas caused me to buy our firsst vcr. thanks for the memories & future shows.
Loved Dallas. Hope the new series is as addictive as the original. Hope they have plenty of commercials letting us know ahead of time when the new series start. Wouldn’t want to miss a single episode.
i just finished watching all fourteen seasons and I would love to see more!
We waited with great anticipation for Friday to arrive so we could watch Dallas without any interruptions. At one point our TV tube was going and the only colors available were variations of pink but we still watched (and listened to) it! Finally, we saved up the money for a new TV (they weren’t that cheap back then!) What about Cliff Barnes and that long drawn out tension between families? The Ewing’s need some deceit and jealousy coming from the outside. The oil industry as it is today will help make for an intriguing plot. Looking forward to it (in… Read more »
We own them all. My husband and I watch them all the time!!! We need a new series.
We want a new series!!!!
I am probably the most addicted to the Dallas series. I own all of the seasons, plus the Dallas: JR Returns movie and the Dallas Reunion show.
Can’t wait for the new pilot!!
Can’t be anymore addicted than me. I haven’t got all of the seasons yet – working on getting 12, 13 and 14. I am hoping to see new show and I hope its a hit. I can’ wait either. Strange, I had emailed someone asking about having a new Dallas show with JR’s son, Bobby’s son and Jenna’s. I can’t Wait ! ! ! ! !
yeah i was a fan of Dallas. i was just a kid when it was on, but my dad watched every single episode of it and my brother and i sat down with him and watched. when it ended, we were left hanging as to Who Shot J.R.? I am not sure that many of the younger generations would be too interested in watching it now,but i know that many of us “older” ones would probably watch it.
