With Dallas slated to return as a new TV series next summer on TNT, it seems like only a matter of time before someone tries to bring back Dynasty, the other blockbuster primetime soap of the 1980s.
Earlier this year, Dynasty co-creator Richard Shapiro said that he and wife Esther were actually working on a prequel feature film that would be set in the 1960s. Shapiro said it would take place in the early Kennedy years and revolve around Blake’s discovery that he’s the heir to the family fortune and his love affair with Alexis.
Shapiro noted, “We’ve given thought to the movie before and we’ve been approached by a lot of companies, but no one seemed to have a proper fix on it. Then suddenly we said, ‘Let’s do it [ourselves]!’ — and we’re the ones to do it.”
He explained, “It was my daughter Florie’s notion to do a prequel, and that sounded very very good to us. It’s how young Blake doesn’t realize he’s the son of Tom Carrington, but then he finds himself at the head of this company and surrounded by assassins and people who want to do him in.”
It’s unclear if there will be parts for any of the surviving members of the TV show’s cast, but Joan Collins has been in contact with co-creator Esther Shapiro. Collins said she couldn’t share any of the top secret details of the script but noted that she’d love the opportunity to play Alexis again.
If they stick with the prequel idea, the 78-year-old diva looks great for her age but is obviously way too old to play a young Alexis. Still, there’s always the possibility that Collins could play Alexis in bookend scenes, in which she recounts her younger days with Blake. Perhaps at his funeral, as an homage to John Forsythe who passed away last year?
What do you think? Would you like to see a Dynasty prequel movie? Who would you cast? Should Collins and other members of the TV cast have roles in the project? Which ones?
Joan Collins, in fact all of the women on this show, except Cirby who was just a brat, were excellent. They had so many things happen to their family. Ms Carroll was extroidinary. Both first Fallon, and second were interesting characters but I preferred Pamela Sue Martin, the Actress who played Claudia, Pamela Bellwood was also great. Both Linda and Joan were beautiful women playing parts Krystal and Alexis Carrington & Colby well. I liked all thd men except certain ones who seemed to be male whores goinv from daughter to secretary, to sister n laws to whoever was available.… Read more »
and good elegant act,
Yes more dynasty
Yes. I’d love to see a remake a Dynasty prequel. And I think Jacqueline McInnes who plays Steffy from the soap the “Bold and the Beautiful” should play Alexis Carrington and Chace Crawford who played Nate from Gossip Girl should play Blake Carrington. I think these two would perfect in these roles. However, I haven’t a clue as to who should play a young Cecil Colby who started off as his best friend. But I hope whoever is doing the movie would seriously consider these two actors for the role.
I would much rather see a rebooted continuation on TV (like TNT’s “Dallas”) than a movie prequel – at least for now.
I agree… These are two powerful families with children who will have obviously grown up to manage their families businesses…With Foresythe gone, maybe Jeffs, Stevens, or Adams sons now run the companies with guest appearances by Blakes have sisters daughter, Jeff and Fallons son, Steven and Samantha Jo’s sons, the men and women who took care of the Carrington home, the stables, drove the exotic cars…1984 to 2017 a lot of t8me and technology has passed. Keep it current
I would LOVE to see Dynasty make a comeback!!!! Ya hear that Shapiro, I would love it!!! Hell, I could be the long lost illegitimate son of Dominique Deveraux. Call me….
I WONDER TOO, HOW WOULD ANY OF THE ORIGINAL CAST PLAY THEIR SAME CHARACTERS IF A PREQUEL WERE TO COME AROUND. I THINK INSTEAD THE SHOW SHOULD BE UPDATED AND CONTINUED, ALLOWING THE YOUNGER RELATIVES SUCH AS LITTLE BLAKE, KRISTINA AND DANNY TO CONTINUE WITH THE RUNNING OF THE TWO EMPIRES WITH THE OLDER CHARACTERS STILL DOING WHAT THEY DO BEST, FIGHTING OVER THE RUNNING OF THE TWO EMPIRES. BESIDES IT MAKES MORE SENSE. ON THE UPDATED SHOW DALLAS IT IS THE YOUNGER RELATIVES WHO ARE GOING TO BE CARRYING THE WEIGHT OF THE SHOW. THAT IS PERHAPS HOW DYNASTY… Read more »

The idea of a “Dynasty” prequel is not an awful one. As a fan of the original series, I would certainly watch. However, I would rather see something like TNT is doing with “Dallas”. As far as a next generation goes, “Dynasty” has a lot more to work with than “Dallas” (Jeff and Fallon’s two children, Stephen and Sammi Jo’s son, and of course Blake and Krystal’s daughter). This would also give them the opportunity to bring back at least some of the original cast members. I really hope that the new “Dallas” is a success and that this can… Read more »
Much better than any reality show. I dont know these reality folks, but Dynasty is an imaginary family with real world Oil issues in Colorado.
I second what JED proposes! Sounds like it would be such a hoot to bring Dynasty back and having the Carrington/Colbys square off against the Ewings has always been a primetime dream of mine since both shows’ heydays back in the 80’s.
Dont forget Falcon Crest…
I think they should do the prequel movies, but I am worried about their appeal for a theatrical release (better to do several TV mini-series’ to bring it up to date from the 60s era) – then I could see Collins taking part. That said, a TV series for a new generation with all the original cast as supporting cast (Collins, Evans, James, Martin, Corely, Carroll, Beacham) – should be in it as well. It can not just be Collins. I like the funeral idea. You can’t replace John Forsythe, give it a proper funeral and be respectful. The main… Read more »
