After its debut, it looked like the new Hawaii Five-0 was one of those rare animals — a revival of a classic TV show that didn’t crash and burn immediately. Still, the series isn’t turning out to be as big a success as CBS might like you to believe. The series started off very strong in the ratings but has been losing steam every week.
Hawaii Five-0 debuted on September 20th to a 3.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic (the number that the networks care about) and 14.2 million total viewers. In week two, those numbers dropped 8% but that really isn’t bad for a new show. In week three, they dropped another 3%. This past Monday, they dropped a whopping 11%, hitting a low of a 3.1 rating and 10.7 million viewers.
The CBS series still places first in its timeslot, most closely challenged by Castle. That ABC series registered a 2.7 and 10.66 million viewers this week, up 4% from last week. If Hawaii 5-0’s downward trend continues, it won’t be long before the show loses in the timeslot and could end up in danger by the end of the season. For now, it’ll almost certainly get an order for nine more episodes bringing it to a full season. Beyond that, we’ll have to wait and see.
Interestingly, last year’s timeslot holder, CSI: Miami was doing much better at this point in the season. After four episodes, it was averaging a 4.1 in the demo and 13.72 million while Hawaii Five-0 is currently averaging a 3.5 rating and 12.47 million. Perhaps CBS should have left Miami in its old timeslot.
What do you think? Will Hawaii Five-0 end up surviving past this season? Was it a mistake for CBS to boot CSI: Miami out of its established timeslot?

The first show was great. I like the series but do feel that the story lines get weaker each week. I agree they need to de-emphasize all the islander hoo-hah. And every story does not have to be in the “save the world” mold. That “dirty-dictator-turned-good-guy” story line was had to swallow.
I LOVE IT!!!!!
I love the new Hawaii 5-0. It is taking a while for the cast to find their roles, but this past week’s show was incredible! I watched it twice. I find it more exciting than the old 5-0 which I also watched faithfully. I wish they would move it to a different time slot where it might do better in the ratings. This stupid “Dancing with the Stars” is killing the ratings for 5-0.
The new Hawaii 5-0 is just as good or better than most other Tv cop dramas…the fact that it has the Hawaii 5-0 name is always going to invite criticism and it deserves a look on it’s own merits. It will never be the old 5-0, they don’t even make shows the same way anymore…even fans of the old show knows it had it’s ‘cheesy’ moments but love it anyway. The New show isn’t perfect, but it’s sure a lot of fun to watch. This cast is top notch, personally I think the shows are getting better and the relationships… Read more »
The 2010 Hawaii Five-O sucks. It lacks all of the integrity of the original show. The two male leads are ridiculous. What is up with the New York accent? This show is dying a quick death. It needs some new casting and less smart a++ dialogue. And ah…more real Hawaiians!
New Hawaii 50 is terrific.Just different than original.Don’t understand why the new lead wears a military uniform instead of being a police officer.Next to Blue Bloods its the best new show.Come on, keep the good ones.Tired of reality and dancing show crap.
Hawaii 5 0 is a terrific show – love the writing, action AND the light touch. The writers do a great job developing the back stories of the characters…best show of the week. Thanks, CBS. I’ll keep watching CBS as long as Hawaii 50 stays on the air – MUCH better than the original series – more depth in the characters.
I don’t like this new version, and it is in no way much better than the original series. The characters on the original were also in-depth. They were serious, dedicated professionals who didn’t clown around, and there was much background information given on them. You’d have to watch a pay attention to notice that. This new one is fine is you want fantasy and like the gadgets and violence. The original was a classy, intelligent, creative, well-written and produced crime drama.
I love H5O…hope it stays on!
I hope the show stays on the air, I enjoy watching it.
I totally loved the original H50 and was really excited to see how this version would hold my attention. The pilot was really awsome but it has been on a downward slope ever since. There needs to be less clowning around and be more serious and believable – the writers need to follow the successful formula of the long running hit “24” and “Prison Break.”
And for God’s sake, de-emphasize the “Haole” remarks!
Good luck!
I watch H50 every Monday night. I enjoy the new show very much. I love the entire cast but must admit that I watch mainly because of Alex O. I loved him on Moonlight and was so glad to hear he would be cast in another show. I could look at him 24-7. He’s not only very easy on the eyes, he’s also a great actor. I personally hope CBS will renew the show over and over. If for some reason they do not, I will probably watch only one show on CBS then, and that would be NCIS. I… Read more »
I wouldnt say that the series is that great, but neither would I say that it is a bust. I am very familiar with the original series and therefore have to admit that they should have based it on a new set of characters with some of the old ones showing up evry now and then to check up on the unit. Plus, a modern spin to this show is more timely and attracts more viewers I guess. Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park should have more important roles or more screen time; I’m still not sold on the dynamic… Read more »
I, personally, think it was a huge mistake for them to remake/reboot Hawaii Five-O. The original was a classic. I remember reading somewhere that the producer/creator (of reboot) was a big fan of the original/classic Hawaii Five-O, but with that being said, why in the world would a fan of the original find it necessary to butcher/reboot such a classic. Guess money talks. I still don’t understand why they couldn’t have just taken the new actors, gave them names not synonymous with Hawaii Five-O, filmed in Hawaii and named it something totally different. I watched the pilot just to see… Read more »
CBS screwed up majorly by moving around CSI Miami and New York! As a result, Miami is always shown late because of NFL games. I’ve quit watching both shows as well as Criminal Minds (due to it being delayed in the winter for NCAA games) and deflected to other networks. The only thing I watch on CBS now is The Mentalist and refuse to watch anything new, because the cancelation of The Eleventh Hour is still a sore spot for me.
I like the new show better than the old one. Grace Park is enough reason to watch!
