Could it be that there’s still a glimmer of hope for Life Unexpected? Back in early November, The CW declined to order a full second season of the drama. That kind of decision almost always spells “cancelled.” Combined with terrible ratings, well, the writing was on the wall.
Then, a month later, Warner Bros. announced the upcoming release of the new “Life Unexpected: The Complete Series” DVD set. If the “complete series” was going to be released on April 5th then season two was obviously the end of the TV show. Plain and simple.
Now, Warner Bros. has made a change to the upcoming DVD release’s title that has given some fans hope. They’ve renamed it “Life Unexpected: The Complete 1st & 2nd Seasons.” Indeed, that does seem to leave the door open just a crack that the series could return for a third season.
More likely though, some nervous studio executives didn’t want to box themselves into a corner. If something crazy happened (like the ratings taking a big leap up) and they decided to order more episodes, they’d have a real problem with “complete series” packaging already in the works. The “The Complete 1st & 2nd Seasons” title doesn’t commit to the series ending or returning.
Though the network and studio aren’t willing to publicly admit the show’s demise, some key people have said that the series is truly over.
Back in early November, star Shiri Appleby wrote, “I hate to bring the bad news but our little show is coming to an end. The cast, crew, and I thank you for all your support these past two years. It’s been a little slice of heaven!”
In late November, just after Thanksgiving, the cast and crew wrapped up production. At a recent event, Appleby talked about the special connection between the people working on the show. She said, “The day we got the email that the show got canceled, we were like ‘Okay, we’re going to be done on the 23rd; Thanksgiving’s on the 25th; we’re staying!… And we stayed in Vancouver; we had our last Thanksgiving together, and then we all left the next morning to go back to L.A.. And this is what I think was amazing: we could all be going home to our families, but we’re going to finish this job out with this family and then move. This is the kind of experience I want to continue to have in my life.”
Earlier this month, series creator Liz Tigelaar was asked why the show was only given a 13 episode order for season two and she responded, “it’s called being canceled. which sucks! :)”
Tigelaar and the other writers didn’t know about the cancellation when the script for episode 213 was initially outlined. Fortunately, they were able to make some adjustments that would essentially wrap up the series. She shared, “When I walked into the writer’s room to tell them we were canceled, I said I’m crying about fake people!”
A week before Christmas, Tigelaar wrote, “Just finished watching another cut of 213. I’m so excited for you to see it. Burst into tears with Sheriff Forbes from Vampire Diaries who was watching it with me.”
The last two episodes of Life Unexpected air on January 18th.
What do you think? How would you like to see the show end? Anything that you feel must happen?
IM so sad life unexpected is by far a really good show I dont think they are giving it a really fighting chance and I think it sucks that the network is cancelling cross my fingers and hope for a miracle hope that a millions of people decided to watch the show and it gets a third season thats unlikely …………………
ITS SO UNFAIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thats crazy u guys keep cancelling all the good tv shows becuase of ratings. Other people rather watch stupid reality shows that sucks. Why dont take votes and see if a show should continue or not, even if it is straight to DVD. Just like Mercy great TV series that got cancelled because of ratings and left evrybody hanging not knowing what happend next. I have a ? is the tv station going to be cancelled too? because it looks to me if u guys continue doing this no one can trust u guys to continue watching series that are… Read more »
Look I’m not a kid, I’m 41…… My Mother-In -Law is 65…. We love this show it’s great, It’s not too many show on any more that realy keeps our Att. You can’t just take it off
That really Sucks.
You get us watching, and loving a show then you just take it away,.. Just like Men In Trees, The Gates, And now Life Unexpected……. I’m tired of it. Ya’ll are going to make me not watch any more TV Shows. I’ll get Cable and just watch Movies…….
Very disappointed that the CW is cancelling this show. I loved the flawed characters who–like the rest of us–try to make the right decisions each day and don’t always succeed. I thought all the actors were great as well giving us real drama, laughter, and tears. The networks have to give people more time to find and discover new shows.
HA HA no.
My husband and I enjoy this show. We find it refreshing! I wish they would reconsider canceling.
I loved Life Unexpected. One Tree Hill you must be kidding. To me it was a cute, relaxing, romantic, and entertaining. I hope they reconsider and NOT cancel Life Unexpected.
Can’t believe they are even hinking of cancelling Life Unexpected. I am so sick
of Dr.and Detective shows and the stupid sitcoms. This is great and totally different show. I hope to God they come to their senses and renew it!
@Shina, I agree. I think the show should have been centered more around Cate and Baze. I would have liked to see Cate struggling more with her feelings for Baze and eventually them getting together. Kate should never have been pregnant with Ryan’s baby and Lux should have been a virgin considering that she was given up for adoption and Cate having her at 16. There would be so much story there with Lux being very cautious about having sex. I did want Ryan’s ex to be pregnant with his baby and Cate and Ryan trying to make it work… Read more »
I agree. This show is very good and different. While many of CW’s show’s are similar I appreciated the premise of this show. It had heart and depth. While they could have done without the scandolous teacher-student relationship I feel the majority of the story line was real and refreshing. I am hopeful still that maybe just maybe it won’t be cancelled…but it looks like it will. Which given the fact that shows with HORRIBLE acting like 90210 are still on the air, Life Unexpected was different and real. I agree…this is show had enormous potential!
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS SHOW!!! I really wish the CW wouldn’t cancel it. This is one of those feel-good shows, and I will totally miss it. Cancelling the show is such a bad decision! 🙁
JOHANNA- Is there anything we can do to help? LUX (I don’t know who came up with this acronym…) is one of the best shows on the CW. PERIOD. All the actors give their all on that show even with a limited budget (makeup, wardrobe, production, etc.). CW did not give this show appropriate marketing or promotion. This show COULD HAVE been the next Gilmore Girls (probably better) but no one gave it a chance. While I don’t agree with all of the decisions the writers made. For example, I did not want Kate to get pregnant with Ryan’s baby.… Read more »
Loved Lux. Reminded me of the good old days if damsons creek. Great little show that kept its stories honest and entertaining. I’ll buy them on DVD so I can continue to watch. Silly people you misses a great show.
I like LUX and am working hard with fans all over the world to ask CW or someone to pick this show up.
I have to say that I really do like family dramas but Life Unexpected is nothing worth crying about to me. I mean the pilot was ok and the rest of the first season was tolerable. But when the show returned for its second season, I tried tuning in but got bored by the third episode of season 2. I mean look at One Tree Hill. That show is in its 8th season and still Mark Schwan still keeps the show fresh and entertaining. That’s a real family drama there. Same as shows like Everwood and 7th Heaven. Those shows… Read more »
What are you talking about – One Tree Hill is terrible now! I’ve been watching that show since day one and finally this season I wish they would just put it out of it’s misery. The new characters are bland and boring and the shows go epidodes of nothing happening to one ridiculous episode of cheap horror movie (Nannie Carrie and now this new Sarah copycat.) What happened to Mark Schwann! Life Unexpected had a little bit of a slow start but the characters are far more real and relatable than OTH. This last season and especially the last two… Read more »
Sarah & Sid, First of all I have got to completely agree with Sarah that OTH has run it’s course but keeps coming back season after season! How that is able to happen when Life Unexpected has given viewers something refreshing and true to life to watch is beyond me. While it is possible for teenagers to get pregnant, marry, remain married, AND become filthy rich within six or so years….it is highly unlikely. On the other hand, Life Unexpected shows us glimpses of teen pregnancy, our flawed foster care system, and dysfunctional families coming together for the sake of… Read more »
I am not a kid, I am not a young mother, I am almost one of those “retired” folks you hear so much about. This “little show” is wonderful. It would be such a shame to see this program come to such an early end. It really should be picked up and given new life. This show is; fun, interesting, challenging, dramatic and informative. It would be such a shame to end this show!!!
I totally agree! I love this show! There is a lot of crap on television these days and it is hard to find something that actually holds my interest! This would not be the first great show to be cancelled but it would just be a disappointment.
