We all saw it coming. One of the most anticipated TV shows of the new fall season, Lone Star, has been cancelled after two episodes.
Lone Star centers around a handsome conman (James Wolk) who lives a double life to swindle investors and an oil tycoon family. He starts to have regrets and struggles to balance both lives and keep everybody happy. Others in the series are Jon Voight, Adrianne Palicki, Bryce Johnson, David Keith, Eloise Mumford, and Mark Deklin.
The FOX series debuted last week to a very disappointing 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.1 million total viewers. Last night, despite several days of buzz and campaigning to get new viewers, the ratings fell even lower to a 1.0 rating in the demo and 3.23 million viewers. As was the case in week one, many people who started watching tuned out before the episode was over. For whatever reason, it just didn’t click.
Lone Star has been cancelled effective immediately and the three remaining unaired episodes have been shelved. There’s no word if FOX will get around to releasing the remaining episodes at some point in the future.
Last week, the cast and crew were shooting the sixth installment. Production has now been shut down and it’s unclear if that episode was completed.
Lone Star’s spot will be filled by the season three premiere of Lie to Me.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see Lone Star be cancelled? If you watched, where do you think it went wrong?
UPDATE: Subsequent reports have indicated that there are six completed episodes with four left unaired.

No, LauraColsOh, they don’t. They still use the approximantely 55 year old “Nielsen ratings” system for the most part. Of course, like other users have pointed out, almost no one sits down at 9pm to watch a show as it’s broadcast anymore. Who has the time? Most of us record them somehow for later. There ARE still millions of VCR’s running out there. And if you have some model DVR’s you can record 2, 3, or more shows at once. So, say if you work nights like me, you can watch “Lone Star” on Saturday morning, save 5 episodes of… Read more »
What?! I just caught the 2nd half of the 2nd episode and fell in love with the show! I spent this past week telling everyone I know about it. I am very disappointed the show will not continue…
Bad decision to cancel. And, what is this in the article re: 18 to 49 demographic? Don’t you think anyone over 49 watches TV? Don’t you know over 50 is the biggest audience and growing? Do you think over 49 means we are all senile and don’t count? Ridiculous!!! I don’t like you anymore FOX.
Loved this show!!! Very upset that it’s cancelled!!!
FOX you made a big mistake. This could have been the best show of the fall lineup if you just would have given it a chance. Acting was impressive, story and plot had me wanting more. I sure dont know how your exec’s came to this decision, something just is not right somewhere. FOX you are wrong on this.
I have been a TV -movie newspaper-magazine critic for 50 years…worked for Warner Brothers Film, and was on radio-TV for 15 years…This was a different kind of show. Give it a chance..! And we liked it a lot I have watched an awful lot of TV and movies..! Not like the other same junk offered. The star was a guy that did not leap tall buildings in a single bound, or was a cocky hot-shot good looking dude after all the girls in the country. A guy that was trying to go straight, live a regular life, but his crooked ( excellent… Read more »
Lone Star was my favorite of the Fall 2010 season. I hope someone is smart enough to pick it up. All the characters were interesting, as was the story line. Something different for some of us who relish different.
I WAS ENJOYING the show and was looking forward to how he was going to lead a life without being a connman. other than tbhe two wives things. 4 million people want to see how this goes. They could at least give us the end of the season wrap it up for those of us who did watch it. I DVRd it by the way so my watching didnt count I guess. I think this was a mistake. I almost dont want to watch new shows anymore until theyve been on a couple seasons and know itll be there for… Read more »
Do they take into account the use of DVR in the current TV watching? We never-ever watch TV show as it is broadcast.
I’m surprised Fox did not exile LS to FX, where they can recover revenue by playing it over and over again. Perhaps it could pick up a cult following.
This reaction sounds like some executive has a deep dislike for LS or maybe someone associated with it. Maybe an internal power play is going on.
I thought it was a cleverly written show and if I had to say why the show was cancelled I think it was the unlikeable character who played Bob’s dad, David Keith has had some great roles in the past but the scenes he was in kind of put a wet blanket over the proceedings. This and Jon Voight, same tired old tough guy routine seen in Varsity Blues, enough already…sad for the younger actors, I saw James Wolk in ‘Front of the Class’ based on a true story and he is a very promising actor, he did an outstanding… Read more »
I really liked the first episode and thought the show had great potential, even with the ‘unknown’ cast! I usually do not watch LIVE TV and record everything I watch, so I haven’t seen the second episode as of yet. Fox placed this show in a TERRIBLE time slot against DWtS (ABC). Let’s face reality though . . . Many people do not watch LIVE TV these days. People have busy lives and most have a way to record a show, whether by DVR or the old VCR, and do so to view later. Networks need to forget the Nielsen… Read more »
Loved this show–production values of a major motion picture with the cast to match. PLEASE–can some network grab it and replace some of the ridiculous dreck that is passing for TV these days???!!!
VERY disappointed! – My husband & I were enjoying this show – It’s very annoying when networks shut down shows so fast, and those who were planning to keep watching are left twisting in the wind – at least finish out the season! – Sheesh!!!!! – that’s fine I’ll go to another network then! (Maybe going up against Monday Night Football isn’t the best time slot either)
loved the show. .this really upsets me… so many good shows leave my TV world before it should. .this is one of then.. i l ove the lead- so what if he is cheating.. i love the fact he really cares and of jis dad was not there he would make better choices.
