Last week, after the poor debut of FOX’s Lone Star, TV show creator Kyle Killen asked people to give the series a chance and hoped for a “stunning upset” in the ratings.
Sadly, that didn’t happen and the ratings for episode two dropped even lower. It was no surprise when FOX pulled Lone Star from the schedule and cancelled production.
Killen has had some time to reflect on the events of the past couple weeks and has written another post about Lone Star. He expresses gratitude for the chance to make the show and to the many viewers for their support. He also talks about the possibility of Lone Star moving to another channel but understands the chances are remote at best.
Here are some excerpts. You can read the whole post here.
So here’s the thing. We made a good show. Not Shakespeare. Not MASH. But something I was proud of. I can’t really speak to anyone else’s reaction, I can only be honest about my own. We assembled a staff, a cast, and a crew that I think was committed to telling interesting and thought provoking stories and who were excited about where we’d planned to head. And now it’s over. The part of me that feels awful that these people are now out of work wishes they’d done anything other than join this show. The part of me that’s so excited about what we did can’t thank them enough for signing on and making it happen.
As for the show’s future, if you read the news you know what I know. We’re actively looking at other homes for it, but those situations are rare. Imagine trying to just jam the engine from a Toyota in a Chevy and you get some idea how hard it is to take a show from one network to another. These things are custom jobs and what looks simple on the surface requires an incredible amount of engineering underneath. Whether we’ll pull something like that off is anyone’s guess. But we’re certainly trying.
Lastly, I literally don’t have the words to thank those of you who participated here and on twitter and facebook and, you know, the real world, in supporting the show. I’ve been in the habit of writing incredibly inane things in this space for some time and have to say that I was blindsided by the scale of the reaction to my last post. Of all the incredible and unexpected things to come out of this entire process, those last few days were perhaps the most incredible and certainly the least expected. I feel like we tried to get a write in candidate elected president together, and while we were completely and utterly destroyed when the votes were tallied, I’ve never felt such an odd and full connection to a group of people I’ve never met and likely never will. Given all that, ‘Thank you’ seems woefully insufficient to convey my gratitude. Perhaps I can just mow all your lawns for the hell of it.
What do you think? Do you agree with Killen? If you had your way, which channel would pick it up?

This show had huge heart with massive potential and great acting. Bring it back!
Fox is boring as it is, then they put this stupid show “Lie to Me” on to replace Lone Star. I really hope you do find another station to pick this series up. I even took an hour break from watching Monday night Football to watch Lone Star. No wonder Fox is a piss poor station anymore for TV series programs. Your show probably pissed off some politician that is why they axed you, not because it had poor ratings.
lonestar gets cancelled and all this other crap stays on television! what!
So sad it was cancelled, I really loved the show, I will be checking news in case they go to another channel, hope soon……
I too really enjoyed the first two episodes and hope it can get picked up by another netflix or at least show the rest of the filmed episodes
I’m so sorry the show was canceled. It was one of my favorites. I wish networks would leave shows on long enough for people to get a chance to find them. So many new things to see in new season, and trigger happy execs don’t give you time to get established.
An interesting and provocative show and it was cancelled after two episodes? Very disappointing. Very telling. Hundreds of channels and not much worth watching.
This was a great show! Don’t cancel it!
Loved the show hate to see it go. Will watch it again. Was very interesting and my favorite!
Cant believe it got canceled was my favorite show. Will it be picked up elsewhere if so i would watch it! I was looking for it today and thought I as going crazy because i know i set it to record. Sorry to see it go… 🙁
I liked it… except. How could the main character say he wanted to ‘go legit’ and still be a polygamist? I think the conflict of trying to deal with his dad while going straight would have been fine. The two wives lifestyle made me lose sympathy for his struggle. Didn’t ‘jive’ with his desire to straighten up. Consequently, I couldn’t be on his side. As a result, I wasn’t sure whether to route for him or not. Too much dissonance. Plus, it put both ladies in the position of victims. Not a preferred formula. Without that thread, I could have… Read more »
I loved the first 2 episodes! I can’t believe they cancelled after only 2 shows. John Voight was great as the old baron patriarch, and the main characters were lots of fun. Maybe people were too shocked at the premise of the show … it should have been on cable like Showtime or HBO.
******** that this show was cancelled. I don’t watch television series shows at all except for the ones that my wife watches. This is the first show that I actually got into, and its cancelled. This show was very interesting and had a ton of potential.Very disappointed!!!! Fight for it Kyle Killen!!!!!!
I loved this show and was highly disappointed when I sat down to watch it tonight and could not find it. I hope it continues on another network soon!
I loved this show; saw both episodes and was HOOKED! Hopefully it can be picked up by another station because we’ll definitely tune in!
