Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

So sad……somehow I did not know that it was the last show so I was unprepared and shocked. Love the show, the actors, the writing is great! Thank you for the great shows, will miss you all!
Medium was one of the top two shows I looked forward to each week. This is a serious disappointment. The last episode was poorly done.
Yep — good ending — wished the show could have gone on longer, but this wrapped it up in a manner consistent with previous episodes.
It was very sad. The ending with each cast member waving goodby was sweet but the story itself was sad. Why did Joe have to die and why did we have to go forward 41 years and see Allison die? Also none of the kids were in the story really i think aerial got 1 minute of screen time the other two I think had a few minutes. Would have been great to see Joe come back and go forward see the kids All doing well and maybe aerial picking up her moms gift and doing well helping others. Allison… Read more »
I thought it was a good show but a real tear jerker. So sorry to see this great show cancelled I never missed an episode. Watched the kids grow up. Joe the most patient husband in the world who never got a good nights rest. I will be watching the reruns on some channel when I can find them. Glad I got netflix, by the time the networks get through there will be nothing but those rediculous reality shows.
At first I hated the last show because it skipped 7 years ahead. But by the end it save itself. I loved Allison and Joe getting back together in the afterlife. They both looked so good and I love the song that played. What was the name of that song and who played it. Sorry to see the show go.
I Tivo-ed it and just watched now. We (my wife and I) are huge fans of the show, sorry to see it leaving just when we were getting into it. As to what we thought of the last show. Hmmm . . .. thought it was a little contrived, actually, missing some of the subtlety that marked the best shows.
On the other hand, the only show I’ve ever seen come to a satisfactory close was M.A.S.H. And that was a long time ago.
It was extremely disappointing. The way Joe tells her goodbye lacked emotion. His character would’ve said goodbye to his little girls as well. The writers could have done much better. However, the writing wasn’t the same caliber as it used to be with NBC. What a disappointment. I always imagined the ending better.
I loved it!
great way to end it. But I will miss the show.
I think it was a terrible way to end the show. The show could have gone on for more seasons as far as I am concerned. I am terrible disappointed.
Not a great ending, no.
You people suck! One of the best shows on tv that isn’t that crappy reality stuff and you cancel it. Shame on you! I won’t be watching your station anytime soon!
Sad
why do the always have to cancel my favorite shows! It’s getting harder and harder for me to find anything to watch..
I have watched Medium since day 1, I guess they want to make room for another stupid so called “reality” show…oh well I guess it’s gonna free up time for me to read.
I feel robbed and sad! Had no idea tonight was the series finale so I watched the whole thing confused and in shock!!! I think if I had known I would have been prepared to say goodbye, but I am NOT! I will really miss my Friday night show
