Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

Very good ending. Very tearful and it stood up to the wonderful writing that it has been for every season!
Fair well to a great show & great family on T.V.
I wish them all a wonderful future!
Thanks
I’m pissed, I was blind sided by this. I love Patricia Arquette I was glas she finaly got to show her talents. I thought finaly a show with morales, something you could watch with your kids. They will probably replace it with some stupid reality show or something like that.
I did not know the series was ending! It was one of the few shows my husband & I watched together. But killing Joe… I am really upset. Joe & Allison were characters that were sooo believably real. I’m really going to miss this show !!!
And Bridget was such a great character … I will always remember the rain boots 😉
Too contrived. The show deserved better writing.
It was a good way to end it. You could still continue it without Joe in her life anytime you want. I wish you would because I love/ed the show and don’t want it to end. I hope to see her and the other actors in something just as good, maybe a situation comedy next time.
Could not bare to see the last episode, I always thought the writer on this show were brilliant. Another good show gone.
I was hoping it was just a dream… I loved this show and thank you for the best finale.
As I was watching, I had no idea this was the series finale. I bawled through the ending, then was more confused when I saw the actual cast waving their goodbyes at the end. I had to look it up online to be certain, and now I know. I’m very sad to see the show end. As annoying as it was to see Allison’s husband, Joe, disbelieve her weekly when her dreams predicted some doom or another, the show was lovely. I look forward to seeing Sofia (who plays Ariel) as she matures and plays more parts in her adult… Read more »
i think it is terrible, i really liked that show and was not ready for it to go away!! terrible, it was a good episode though, but sucks that it is gone
not really happy about the show ending. We considered “Medium” one of our favorites and will truly miss the program. We truly loved the chacters and will miss them. Thanks for the entertainment.
I hated it. I was so sad that they had Joe die and Allison had to wait 41 years the be with with him. I just hated it.
Great ending!
Enjoyed it very much… I’m also glad they didn’t walk into the light at the end like a certain other show… you know which one I’m talking about.
What did I dislike about it? That the show ended!
The ending of the film “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir” was virtually the same as the ending of “Medium” and other story points were the same as well. It is regretable that the producers of “Medium,” which I have watched from episode #1, did not chose to end the series on a happier note. Watching the episodes again on dvd will be difficult knowing they killed off Joe.
