Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

A sad fact of television viewing life is no matter how great a series may be they all come to an end; unless its the Simpsons or Saturday Night Live. The series finale was done with a great deal of sentiment and in the true spirit of the series. I shall miss it.
I will totally miss this show. I was disappointed when Ghost Whisperer ended but, not nearly as much as this one. This was a great show. The writing was good for the final episode but, I still hated to see them have Joe die. I would have liked to see them just continue on as they were and keep that in my head rather than Joe dying, and, then Allison years later. But, they neatly wrapped it up I guess. I’m hoping there will be another series that is similar although, I love these actors so much it will be… Read more »
Hated the ending. Joe didnt have to die. could have made it much happier. I will miss this show so much.
Great ending. Hate that CBS cancelled the show. But that is what they do. Every good friday night show they have, they only run for about a year or two then axe it.
I do appreciate that unlike many other cancelled shows (i.e. Jericho and The Agency), they at least wrapped it up in a satisfactory manner. Will miss Medium — great friday night treat.
Sad when thought Joe was dead, happy when thought Joe was alive, sad when Joe tells her, yup, he’s dead, but when Allison dies and Joe is standing in the corner waiting for her – geez – I get teary just writing about it. Loved the show since the beginning and will miss it.
NOT GOOD! I am really sad to see this show go, and didnt even know it was going till I just watched the last episode. But why oh why did they feel the need to kill off Joe??? And why did you have to make it jump around so much? Why couldnt you just have the family need to move for Joe’s job or something? Just make it like a good bey show, not so dark. And with a little less torture to Allison and her family through the show.
I didn’t like it. I found ot confusing I didn’t realize it was the finale or I wouldn’t have wasted my time.
I loved the show always have, have been watching since the show aired in 2009, I think or lets just say from the beginning, I loved the show, I just wish I was more prepared and new it was ending. Also I too think it should have been a two hor show, I cant get enough of the whole cast, but in the credits it never showed who Alison’s brother Michael’s Name, I know last week it was her brother, but the one before that? Thank you for an awesome series. Cannot say enough about Medium and I love that… Read more »
I feel like I just finished a good book I never wanted to end, i did not know it was ending until after i watched tonight, was a great ending to a great series, wish there was more
WOW!~ Great series finale. Hate to see the series end.
One thing i loved about this show over the years was that the charachters looked and acted more like real people than usual on TV.
Allison had lots of bad hair days, and her clothes didn’t fit perfectly and often looked disheveled. Joe & Allison’s relationship seemed very real to me. And the kids were normal-looking too and bickered like real sisters.
I was actually crying that the show is over. I will miss it. I’m glad it had a good long run, and I’m glad that CBS picked it up after NBC dropped it.
it was okay, i wish the wouldn’t have ended it though! or at least made it a two hour show!!! I cant get enough of Medium!!!!
I was shocked when I realised that this episode was going to be the end of the show;
I really enjoyed the couple, the children and all the cast. I did love the message that Joe gave Allision about her success and of the girls’ success also. after his death.I will miss it.
The final episode was bitter sweet. I’ve been a faithful Medium fan since the first episode and I hate to see it go. I’ve especially loved the relationship between Allison & Joe. Thanks to the writers and great acting, I found their love to be very natural & real. I found Lee to be real sexy.
I agree that the ending has effected me and I just can’t get Joe’s death off my mind. I’m a older person and loved the relationship between Allison and Joe. Just can’t get over the fact that the show is over. Darn What are the actors going to do now so that I can follow their careers?
I too have been there for “Medium” since episode I. Actually, the first episode was fabulous! I don’t know how much time was provided to give Medium it’s truly deserved final show; can that ever happen anyway. Medium was a program that I watched with sheer enjoyment and found the characters real. Allison, Joy and the girls will be missed. My hope is that another netword will pick them up.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and I loved that they gave everyone closure 🙂
didn’t like having it end, and didn’t like killing off Joe… it was a pretty good show… will miss it
Fantastic ending, but we had no idea this was the last episode. We sat wondering thru the whole show wondering what was going on, thin king Allison would wake up and life would go on. I live for Friday nights and Medium. Ending it STINKS.
