Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I’m so sad right now, I had no clue they would finish the show today. I knew it was the last of the season, but not that it was the final episode of the entire show. It’s futile to hope the cast comes here to read this, but if they do, I’d like to thank you all for 7 years of joy you’ve brought us. Me and my husband have watched you from the start and loved every episode. I’m glad the show ended the way it did. I will feel closure after I watch the finale again. Fighting tears… Read more »
OMG – I can understand wanting to incorporate some of Allison’s dreams into a personal situation but Joe’s death? Seems they could come up with something better. The worst part was that she lost all integrity by making an illicit deal with a major criminal just to follow her hunch/dream. Ok – so that was all part of a dream, but really? I admire the depth of the story as in the dream with so many twists, but not the final story as told by the ending. When a show is created as a family show, it shouldn’t end as… Read more »
I loved that show. I will surely miss it. I thought that the ending was very well written. I didn’t know that it was the last show until the end when they all gave a silent goodbye.
I also was in shock last night realizing that this was to be the last show. The entire cast has been stellar; don’t get why it was cancelled. The best show on the network. Thoughtful, emotive, both Patricia Arquette & Joe did a fine job of their parts. A believable family with all its wrinkles; not airsprayed like so many shows – they seemed like a neighbourhood family. I will miss their family coming into my house every week. The last show seemed like they threw it together very quickly & yes, I would have liked some warning CBS! I… Read more »
I didn’t know the show was cancelled. When I watched the show last night I was surprised. I thought it was really great that they made an ending for the show instead of just leaving you hanging. I will really miss the show. I am not happy that it is over
I think NBC is a crappy channel and I will now be switching to something else! This was a damn good show and NBC does not have many of those. With all the stupid reality shows on TV they is hardly any good shows left. And NBC being retarded as they are have just cancelled one of the BEST!
Loved the finale! Shocks, twists, and everything was wrapped up. Joe really dying was very heartfelt and sad, and Allison holding onto him in her dreams was heartbreaking…the end when she died and was with him was wonderful….
THAT is how you end a show and show respect to the fans!
Arquette should certaily submit that as her Emmy tape for next year and certainly should get a nimination!
This show will be missed!
I just discovered this show two yrs ago & loved it! I watched last night and did not know this was the last show! I was so mad.. I look forward to it every week & to know this is based on a true person makes it even more interesting.. The last show was Excellent & sad I cried! I love the family so fun to watch.. What a dissapointment. This show could have easily gone on for another 5 years.. Why dont they cancel some of these stupid reality shows for the teenie boppers.. What a mistake to cancel… Read more »
Enjoyed the show very much and thought the writers were very creative. loved the family and how the marriage and family interacted in a very loving way. It’s the way it should be, and I wish there were more shows like that. Will miss this family very much.
I loved/hated the ending!! I had a terrible cry for half an hour after it was over!! Not sure whether I was crying because of how the episode ended or because the series itself has ended. The development of the many relationships, Allison/Lee, Allison/Joe/daughters, but especially between Allison and Joe was terrific!! Stiill haven’t come to terms with the fact the show is over… fabulous writing and acting… with all the crap that is currently on television, it is very sad a wonderful family show such as this is not going to be available any more. I feel as though… Read more »
It was a terrible way to cancel such a great show. I felt like there was a death in my own family. We have loved that family for so long and all of a sudden — it was gone and in such a tragic way. Joe to die so tragically — why couldn’t we remember them as a family that continues on. We could just go back to see them when we wanted to see a friend or member of the family.
It made me so sad to say goodbye. It was like saying goodbye to a member of my family.
I enjoyed the last show. I felt Allison’s actions were very much in character. BUT! I will miss the show terribly. It has been my favorite show for 7 years. I breathed a sigh of relief when CBS picked them up. Now what?
Loved the show, but can’t believe they killed off Joe. Their marriage was such a huge part of the show and he missed so many years of his family’s lives. I hated the series finale. The writers ruined the series for me. Go watch the series finale for “Six Feet Under” to see how it should be done. Killing Joe off at such a young age was one of worst ways to end the series, in my opinion. …..Bummed in Florida!
Didn’t want it to end. We watched this show every week. Did not like Joe getting killed, but liked the ending where they met up again.
