Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I didn’t like Joe being killed off, and I don’t like it being cancelled, I’ll miss the show.
I didn’t know it was ending. I am so sad. At least they didn’t leave us hanging but a 2 hour special would have been better. We’ll miss it!
The best thing about Medum was the interaction of the family, and you destroyed that with the death of Joe. I was a faithful viewer but am disappointed in the way you ended the show. Of course Allison was strong and would go on without Joe, but did you have to make her?
Huge surprise and disappointment. First I know there were shows that showed their future and getting old together. Then. Why wouldn’t she get that premonition of the plane crash days in advance? It didn’t end right. It would have been better to end the show with no ending at all. Like reality.
why???
🙁
I can’t get enough of Medium, I wish it could have been a 2 hour ending. Just can’t understand why they cancelled it. Phyllis
It was very sad for me to see the show end. I’ve been watching for 7 years, and they were like old friends. While the show often dealt with the gruesome realities of life in today’s world, the family itself remained true to good values and loving relationships. It was an example on tv of how good people can survive and stay good in a less good world.
I hated the ending. Allison and Joe had such a great relationship. Why did they have to kill Joe? Is it because people in the TV land don’t believe in lasting relationships. What dogs.
I really did like this show, one of the last shows that I watch on the big 4. All the actors were awesome, and I will miss this fantasy once a week.
It came unexpectedly- my wife have seen every episode.
It was a damn good show. I miss it.
For some reason the ending hit me hard. Death sucks.
I was not prepared for the finale.
Very sorry to see Medium end, really enjoyed it. I liked all the characters. found the final episode sad. the end reminded me of the Ghost and Mrs. Muir. Sorry the series ended.
I still watch old episodes.
Did not like it. Was too sad. Didn’t know it was the last show and was very disappointed they cancelled it.
This family came into my home every week and just like other shows that have come and gone it’s difficult to say good bye. We’ve watched the children grow up… we’ve seen Allison change her hair style…. neighbors come and go… parents passing over….
they’ve become family and I for one will miss them.
The final show was beautiful written.
I was very depressed they killed off Joe and left poor Allison alone. Now this prevents any sequel from happening. Also, not consistent with her ability to dream aabout the plane crash ahead of time and warn her husband not to get on the plane.
Sorry to see it go, but a great tie up the strings ending. Reminded me of the ending of 6 Feet Under. Compared to the ending of the Soprano, well the ending of Medium left me feeling good about the series. Sopranos, not so much.
Thanks for 130+ episodes.
