Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I have been a fan of Medium since the beginning, I have read every book that Alison Dubois has written. I have been interested in this field for many years and was excited when the show came about. I am truely saden by the ending of Medium as well as my children. This has been a tradition for my family for many years, having our family night watching Medium! I thought this show was one of the best written shows and the most believable one. I used to watch Ghost Whisper but their last season I stopped watching because it… Read more »
It was a poignant and perfect ending to the series. I was very sad to see it end. Have enjoyed it from the beginning. Also loved that their characters were given proper closure. Most often, that doesn’t happen and we’re left hanging forever. Thanks to all connected to the show. Best wishes to all.
i hate to see it end. It floored me. I cried like a baby!
It was a good ending but hated seeing Joe die. I sure wish the show wasn’t over, it saddens me to think I don’t have it to look forward to every Friday now. It’s always sad to see a show end when it’s such a good one. Really enjoyed the run and all the actors/actresses did a fabulous job! I think Allison and Melinda (Ghost Whisperer) need to have a show now! Think what they could accomplish! 🙂
Having watch this show for all these past years, sad to see it go. To much was crammed into the last show. Joe and Allison seemed like they could be neighbors.
cbshas canceled alot of good shows i am not suprised they canceld this one i will miss it
I found that Medium’s Series Finale was so great, it even had me crying, good job!
It was so rushed at the end. First, I thought Allison would not “sell out” to a bad guy…but it was ok. But then, the ending was so strange. Maybe because I did not know the show was airing its last episode. Then, I only had a few minutes to deal with that. The ending seemed rushed and I wish they did not kill off Joe. Also, she has three daughters and she is in a nursing home dying alone?!?! It was just not a realistic ending that fit the people that we grew to love as a family. Wow… Read more »
Hated to see the series end! I loved the relationship between Joe and Alison and I am glad they got together at the end, but I really didn’t think they should have killed him off. It really should have been a 2 hour episode or a 2 part finale so they could do a proper send off – it felt very rushed to me and it was like they were glossing over everything to make it fit into the 1 hour format. I will really miss the show – so sad :(((
I didn’t like the ending, I didn’t like the show ending. The ending seemed rushed and confusing. The episode before the finale didn’t flow into the ending at all. This show was so well liked it deserved a better finale. The writers blew this one, sad to see it go. Loved the show and characters.
The ending was ripped off the classic movie, “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.” Didn’t work well in “Medium.” Too schmaltzy. Will miss the fine cast.
Sure gonna miss those folks. They were one of the nicest, most normal families television ever brought into our homes.
NO! It was a bad dream!!! I def wasn’t ready for it to end. Am I in CBS’ focus group? Prob not cuz I’m a 63 year old woman!
Thank goodness it’s over. Overstayed it’s time for me about 4 years ago
I hate that the show ended but nothing goes on forever. My wife and I are still disturbed that this was all so sudden but it was very well done. The chemistry between cast members was just right and we especially loved the ending where Joe was waiting when Allison died, a bit reminisent of “The Ghost and Mrs Muir” After so much of the show bieng filmed in bed, we loved that last kiss, wow, talk about chemistry. We wish them all well.
Looking forward to seeing Bridgette’s career develop.
