Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I have been a fan of Medium since the FIRST showing falling in love with ‘the family’ and all the REAL family events and interactions of a real family that I recognize as normal in my neighborhood (okay, except for the -medium- stuff). The actors were fantastic and hope they leave the show knowing that. Wisconsin
The season finale of Medium seemed absurd to me. It was so convoluted and confusing. I thought the writers were making a joke of the style of the show, i.e. exaggerating it, to be funny. I thought we would be reading something to that effect in the LA Times the next day, but no. I think killing Joe was out of context with the rest of the series. The final good-byes by the main characters was excellent. Sorry to see this enjoyable show end.
Two days after watching it, I still have a little heartache… Too sad to me. The only good thing about it is realising how fast life goes by…
I didn’t have a clue it was going off the air. I also think that if Dallas could take an entire season and come back the following season with everything having been a dream, you could do the same here. It was a great show and was very bummed out that you kept this finale show such a secret. Nothing now to look forward to on friday nights….
I thought it was a great finale. It tied together the main concepts – there is life after death, that family matters, and that love endures – as experiences through a medium.
Much of the criticism seems to come from the fact the series ended, which I too find sad. However, I can not let that effect my appreciation of a decent send-off.
I’m another loyal “Median” fan and was unaware the show was going to end 🙁
I soooo looked forward to Friday evenings. I understood the final show,
but kept hoping it would be a dream with-in a dream !!!
We need to keep the “good” weekly series. Median was GREAT !
I don’t watch much reality TV… except Dancing with the Stars. There are so many
shows that I won’t let my grandkids watch at my house. I shutter to think of what our
younger generation is taking away from the “crap” out there.
Umm, I think you’ll find it was actually called ‘Medium’.
I am so pissed! I hate how NBC just up & kills a show w/out notice or warning, but i was thrilled to see CBS pick Medium up. I was tickled & when i couldn’t be home Friday evenings, i would DVR or On-Demand it the next day. Now…that won’t happen again. I see now that CBS is no different than NBC. They’ll kill a show just for the kicks of it. So as my fellow Medium fans have said before me…CBS you SUCK!! and i won’t watch anything more you put on because you lure us in w/an awesome… Read more »
I was taken by supprice and confusion with the last episode. Scrambeling for the remote to try to get some confirmation that this really was the last episode!! I am so very dissapointed that this series has been canselled. I realy loved Medium!
I loved all the cast, they did a great job. Any chance you may reconsider and make some more episodes??? PLEASE!!!!!
I have enjoyed watching Medium. Wish it hadnt ended. If it did have to get canceled they didnt have to kill Joe off. It could have just ended with no one being killed off incase it is ever brought back some day.
I am so upset!!!! This show means so much to me. I cannot believe it is over. I feel like a piece of me has died.
I, for one, am joining in the national We Reject the Finale group. As it turns out, there are thousands of Medium fans who are declaring this finale as null and void. It was poorly written, failed to even include interaction among the family and friends that we have come to know, and appeared to be a cheap knock off. Therefore, we reject it as a forgery. The series Medium may have ended. However, this was not the finale. Period.
I completely agree. To take one of the strongest family units seen on television in the last few years, and rush through a ridiculous storyline and kill off one of the main characters was dreadful – and then to follow it with a complete rip off of the ending of Six Feet Under was terrible.
I’m going to forget I ever saw it, and hope it gets reinstated with another channel, another day.
I am so sad, I actually cried because I did not know it was the last season and the last show at all. This is my favorite, or was my favorite show and like others, it was a good family show that there are not much anymore at all. I am not happy at all!!! I am so in love with Joe and how they had him die was a terrible ending… YOU SUCK CBS!!!
SO disappointed and sad to see it go!! It was strange that many of the avid viewers like myself did not know it was the last episode! Such a great show…the last episode was not only incredibly sad but a bit strangely done! I will miss this show!!!!!
I also have been a loyal fan from season 1..I did not like the ending either. As someone else already said..it seemed rushed and put together too quickly .. and killing Joe? WTH? Why? I don’t understand network tv programming… one of the few shows left with good family viewing qualities that was entertaining for everyone and left you with a good feeling after watching it canceled so we can have more reality(trash) programming or something with more “sex appeal” maybe? CBS you SUCK! I honestly can’t think of any other show I watch CBS for…so, yeah, great decision programming… Read more »
I agree with the others. They didn’t end it like it should have been ended. IMHO, it shouldn’t have ended at all. It could have gone on for at least one more season. I too didn’t realize it was going to be the finale until it was too late. Frankly, I’m quite dissapointed at the last episode and the sadness of it all.
