In 2009, both Southland and Medium were cancelled by NBC but were then saved by other networks. Three long-running shows were recently cancelled last month and it looked like each had a good shot of being saved as well.
A couple weeks later, Law & Order and Ghost Whisperer have been denied a second chance and now, The New Adventures of Old Christine has as well.
The New Adventures of Old Christine follows a neurotic single mom (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) who has a hard time juggling a relationship with responsibilities at home and work. Others in the cast include Hamish Linklater, Wanda Sykes, Trevor Gagnon, Clark Gregg, Emily Rutherfurd, Tricia O’Kelley, and Alex Kapp Horner.
The sitcom has been a moderate performer for CBS from the beginning and has ended up on the bubble each year. For the past two years, ABC has been ready to pick up the show if CBS dropped it. Those were in the days when ABC wasn’t having much luck finding successful sitcoms of their own.
When CBS cancelled Old Christine this year, the alphabet network wasn’t as interested anymore because ABC already has some successful sitcoms with several new ones waiting in the wings.
This season, Old Christine aired opposite ABC sitcoms and didn’t fare very well. As a result, the network has decided not to pick up the Julia Louis-Dreyfus sitcom for season six.
The final episode of The New Adventures of Old Christine aired on May 12th on CBS. After five seasons and 88 episodes, there won’t be a final episode to wrap up the series.
On the positive side, reruns will begin airing on Lifetime and on local stations across the country in the fall.
What do you think? Should ABC have picked up Old Christine for season six? How would you have ended the show?

I loved the show , along with my whole family and it needs to be put back on with a new season.
I’ve been trying to figure out when Christine comes back on and then I find out it has been cancelled?! How many classic sitcoms started off badly only to become household names?
When will the network ‘powers that be’ learn when to stand behind some and cut loose others? The cast was perfect and Julia Louis Dreyfus is a damn good actress and comedienne, great timing, and on the nose delivery. You really should have some respect for the Boomers. They still have the money and they are apt to staying home more and watching the sitcoms.
I love to watch The New Adventures of Old Christine. I don’t find the current sitcoms on any network entertaining.
ABC, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GET CHRISTINE BACK ON THE TUBE!
This show was freakin’ awesome! It is extremely witty and funny and I easily related to her. The cast could not have been more perfect. I watch ALL reruns, but I would be THRILLED if she came back on the air. Julia just get’s better everytime I see her. Letting this show end was a bad bad choice!
SERIOUSLY, ABC should consider some regular programming. I cannot stand to see one more freakin’ reality show.
I love this show; Julia Louis-Dreyfus and her cast are brilliant. I cannot believe with all the negative crap that is on TV anymore (I’m so sick of ridiculous reality shows and Dancing with the Starved), this show made me laugh out loud. I think the TV execs blew it.
Not surprised the networks seem to only want programs that nobody watches anyway. This was one of the best shows on. Oh well one more reason to not watch the big three, only watch two shows now. You guys did it again.
I agree—I just started getting into the show and I think it’s hilarious! I’m hoping that ABC will reconsider.
i hate that they cancelled the show! save it!!! it’s such a great show and i have no idea why no one wanted/wants to save it!
The New Adventures Of Old Christine should come back on NBC or Fox. Both of these networks have other funny sitcoms that would run well with this show. It is CBS and ABC’s loss.
I had no idea that this show existed until I saw reruns during the week nights. I hate that it only lasted five seasons. I was hoping to keep seeing more episodes. I enjoy the quirks of each character, and I admit that I have quite a bit in common with “Old Christine”, making her character easy to like and dislike all at the same time, which confusingly enough, I like. Usually sitcoms have a group of characters with set personalities, but the characters in this show are so off the wall they defy the average descriptions usually given by… Read more »
I want season 6 please!
I love this show..
i barely started watching and it is really funny.
I havent watch a show more entertaining.
It is unlike all the others of the perfect mom.
I would had loved to see the final season.
I just discovered the show. I record and watch all of them again and again. If it was me, I would give it a new time slot and keep trying. Julia is magnificent. As either Elaine or Christine, she makes you believe her character. And the cast is such an excellent match. I just love all of the characters. On the other hand ABC, don’t stick your head in the sand and ignore this growing success. It can be on at any time of any day and work. Especially Monday’s or Friday’s. To all networks, what have you got to… Read more »
I love this show!! I wish they would have picked it up because I would have liked to have seen the direction old christines relationship would have gone with her therapist.
I felt ALL of the cast was a wonderful fit. I don’t think I’ve seen a funnier show in such a long time. I’m still looking for that quick witted style of a sitcom and haven’t seen it since. Sorry and sad that it was cancelled.
I really like this show. I just recently started watching the reruns on Lifetime and I have already watched every episode. I love that Julia Louis-Dreyfus doesn’t play the typical perfect mom – she’s a little neurotic, she’s not all put-together and organized, she’s messy and eats all the time and never cleans. In a word: normal. And the rest of the cast is so funny! Why did they drop this show when there’s so much crap on these days? Really doesn’t make much sense. They need to bring this back.
