The CW sitcom Reba, starring country-singing star Reba McEntire, is currently in its sixth season — though barely. The show was reportedly going to be cancelled last Spring but was saved at the 11th hour because the network didn’t want to pay a “kill fee” for not following through on a previous agreement.
Because of this, the popular sitcom was picked up for its sixth season but for just 13 episodes. Basically, the network feels that the show doesn’t fit their “desired demographic.” As a result, the new episodes of Reba didn’t debut until other CW shows had failed. When Reba finally did start it’s sixth season on November 19, 2006, it gave the network some great numbers. The sitcom even helped to boost the viewership of Seventh Heaven.
Ever since then, fans of Reba have been hopeful that the CW would realize the value of the show and order nine additional episodes (to complete the season) and to renew the series for a seventh year. It now looks like that’s not going to happen.
At last week’s Television Critics Association tour in Pasadena, CW President Dawn Ostroff reportedly declined to comment on Reba’s future. Later, it was quietly stated that the sitcom was done. Today, sources at TV Guide and MediaWeek are confirming that Reba has indeed been cancelled. There are four episodes left to air and word is that the CW will air the final two together on Sunday, February 18th.
Will there be some acknowledgment of the series ending? Hard to say. These episodes were shot in December when the cast and crew were unsure of the show’s future. Still, based on the experiences of 2006, I’m sure they may have considered they weren’t coming back.
There are lots of Reba fans out there so understandably there are tons of rumors floating around. One source at the CW reportedly said that the CW will indeed order the nine additional episodes soon (very doubtful now). There has also been talk that Lifetime (the cable channel that airs Reba reruns) has expressed interest in airing a Reba spin-off series. The spin-off would supposedly feature young married couple Van & Cheyenne moving into their own house and raising their new baby together. The rest of the Reba cast would appear as guest stars from time to time (and as a presumably smaller show budget would allow).
Is there still a possibility that Reba could be saved? Very doubtful but, like title character Reba Hart, this show is a fighter so you never know. Whatever happens, you can be rest assured, we’ll keep you posted. Stay tuned!
UPDATE: If there were any doubts, on January 26th, CW officially announced that Reba would end on February 18th.
Why on God’s Green Earth would the networks even think of cancelling Reba? It’s such a great show!!!With all the crap that is on TV these days it’s nice to have somethng to laugh at and enjoy the characters. Do any of them watch the other stuff that’s on instead?
I’m a 22 year-old college student and as soon as I get home from classes and work I rush to turn my TV on to Reba. I have turned many of my friends on to the show as well. I’m still sad that Reba is cancelled. It really is a shame that the CW network didn’t fully realize what an amazing show they had in Reba.
put Reba back on and let Reba and Brock get back together…and lets see how BJ likes it the show is the best
I can’t believe you are going to cancel this show Reba is great i watch it 3 times a day and my 2 year old son sings part of the song he loves it he yell Reba all day waiting for it to come on
I’m kind of really depressed that this show is over. It was a wonderful show and I loved every single minute of it! I was really hoping I would get to see the new baby boy on a seventh season. I loved all the characters, loved the plots… the actors and actresses were real and you could see their true emotions as they were acting out the script, which usually ended up being even more hilarious. Departing words… damn the CW for trying to get rid of the show, bringing it back, then axing it again. Shame!
It is not often that I laugh out loud at sitcoms anymore. There is hardly a lot of originality out there. But the story line of a pregnant teen with newly divorced parents and an ever present pregnant mistress was a step in a new fresh direction. Much in the way Roseanne was its debut. Reba is an amazing actress and the story line was perfection for her insults and comments on life, her life and the circumstances there in. Awesome zingers! Although it is easy to compare Melissa Peterman to Lucy, I saw her chanel the talents of John… Read more »
CW is has major issues. I don’t think that network is going to last fives. The cancels Reba and now it looks like they might canceling 7th Heaven. Don’t they realize that without these two shows they don’t stand a chance against the other big Networks. I hope whoever works at the CW starts looking for new jobs they are going to need it after what they have done. The won’t be having job much longer because no one will be watching that channel.
Everyone send emails to:

and tell them we want REBA back!
I am so disappointed. I just recentley got into Reba, I have been recording episodes, hoping to catch up so when new episodes come on, I know everything. I don’t feel like Reba fit CW’s guidelines or whatever they said. Because Reba was actually entertaining, fun, loving, warm, realistic, and all around a family show. I mean, seriously, how many people are still watching 7th heaven? Thats been on too long….but have they cancelled that? No…I am just very irritated & disappointed they would cancel such a great, loving, entertaining TV show as Reba. They will lose all of viewers… Read more »
Very sad to see Reba go. I love this show! It is fresh, funny and smart. The CW is run by idiots. Big idiots.
Once again the best of the best is ousted and replaced with blood, guts, and sex!! Give us back some real values, humor and all around good fun!

IT WAS STUPID TO TAKE IT AWAY AT FRIST! bad bad desicon on there parts..
PLEASE don’t cancel Reba; if u look at these other shows that stayed on for decades, Reba definately tops those. It’s a ton better than 7th heaven, and that show stayed on forever; people are waiting for that to be cancelled. i tevo 5 episodes of Reba everday and watch them, even if they r re runs. i watch them from lifetime and cw. what would be the point of cancelling it???? its a GREAT show!!!!!!!
