The CW sitcom Reba, starring country-singing star Reba McEntire, is currently in its sixth season — though barely. The show was reportedly going to be cancelled last Spring but was saved at the 11th hour because the network didn’t want to pay a “kill fee” for not following through on a previous agreement.
Because of this, the popular sitcom was picked up for its sixth season but for just 13 episodes. Basically, the network feels that the show doesn’t fit their “desired demographic.” As a result, the new episodes of Reba didn’t debut until other CW shows had failed. When Reba finally did start it’s sixth season on November 19, 2006, it gave the network some great numbers. The sitcom even helped to boost the viewership of Seventh Heaven.
Ever since then, fans of Reba have been hopeful that the CW would realize the value of the show and order nine additional episodes (to complete the season) and to renew the series for a seventh year. It now looks like that’s not going to happen.
At last week’s Television Critics Association tour in Pasadena, CW President Dawn Ostroff reportedly declined to comment on Reba’s future. Later, it was quietly stated that the sitcom was done. Today, sources at TV Guide and MediaWeek are confirming that Reba has indeed been cancelled. There are four episodes left to air and word is that the CW will air the final two together on Sunday, February 18th.
Will there be some acknowledgment of the series ending? Hard to say. These episodes were shot in December when the cast and crew were unsure of the show’s future. Still, based on the experiences of 2006, I’m sure they may have considered they weren’t coming back.
There are lots of Reba fans out there so understandably there are tons of rumors floating around. One source at the CW reportedly said that the CW will indeed order the nine additional episodes soon (very doubtful now). There has also been talk that Lifetime (the cable channel that airs Reba reruns) has expressed interest in airing a Reba spin-off series. The spin-off would supposedly feature young married couple Van & Cheyenne moving into their own house and raising their new baby together. The rest of the Reba cast would appear as guest stars from time to time (and as a presumably smaller show budget would allow).
Is there still a possibility that Reba could be saved? Very doubtful but, like title character Reba Hart, this show is a fighter so you never know. Whatever happens, you can be rest assured, we’ll keep you posted. Stay tuned!
UPDATE: If there were any doubts, on January 26th, CW officially announced that Reba would end on February 18th.
Reba is a wonderful show with good messages, and a cast that works very well together. Please reconsider the cancellation of this show. As the previous posts have demonstrated this would be a terrible loss to many fans; as well as a terrible ratings loss to CW. Maybe Lifetime can pick up the regular Reba show and start producing new episodes!
I don’t know what your thinking wb. Reba is the best show you have on. it makes you laugh. the cast is great. if you had any brains you wouldn’t take this show off.
If Reba is cancelled I’ll never watch cw again. I hope you come to your senses.
Barb
Just like Reba would say, ‘YOU ARE ALL A BUNCH OF MORONS!!!!!!!!!’ This was the only show I watched on CW. Goodbye CW!!!!!!!
I hope that Reba is brought back.i didn,t know it was cancelled until i heard series finale instead of season finale. it is a wholesome sitcom that makes me laugh.all the characters fit well together.I will watch reruns where ever they are,but won’t watch the cw.
I cannot believe they took Reba off of the CW, are they nuts?. I loved that show and watched it religiously. It gave my family time to spend with eachother cause we all love to laugh at barbra jean haha. They oughtta realize aftr awhile that they should held on to it lopnger.
Why would you wanna cancel this wonderful show, ’cause it is a decent show. Me and my wife love watching this show ’cause it makes us laugh and realize what she is going through and all. So please don’t cancel this show ’cause we love it so much.
Someone please pick up Reba! It is the best show on T.V. it’s so nice to be able to sit down and enjoy the old type of sitcom that we have enjoyed in the past years that we see so little of now. Please do something to keep the wonderful show on the air.
REBA is such a wonderful show. With society trying to bring back the family… spending time together…eating dinner together…and now cancelling a show that is one of only a few that the entire family can watch together and everyone enjoys….and it is #1….why in the world would they cancel this show? Let us keep GOOD…CLEAN TV on and make family #1 again in the USA!
My husband happened upon Reba by accident about 3 weeks ago. We have been watching daily reruns ever since. When we found the current episodes we were thrilled. Both kids ages 8 and 15 also watch with us as a family. Its a great wholesome show. We just found Reba and now are losing her. The show is great and will be missed. I do not allow my children to watch other shows on the CW channel, so I guess our viewership will end with Reba.
Thanks CW
Our family enjoys Reba more than any program on TV. CW is making a huge mistake. CBS, this might be your chance to pick up a decent program.
My oh my I guess The CW only airs garbage. Cancelling Reba..a very good family oriented, hirarious show! Of course why would they want to air something in “good taste” ugh..it makes me just cringe of what this world has come to. I guess everything I watch on tv will now be reruns..they are the only shows that are in good taste for the family. Thank God for I Love Lucy reruns and the Golden Girls! Now..Reba reruns will be added to my list.
I’m really upset that you are taking reba off. If it doesn’t have voilets, sex and swearing on it it’s cancelled. Thats bull??.REBA IS THE BEST SHOW EVER and I think ABC should air REBA and not CW. You guys don’t know what great shows are and you don’t think about your viewers. If you cancell Reba I will stop watching your station and go to the stations that cares about their viewers. So pull your head out of your ????????, and think about keeping REBA on.
please, Don’t someone pick it up! It was a great show; CW just dosen’t realize what their doing. Hopefully, lifetime will pick it up.
For all of you who are fans of the Reba show like me, I would suggest contacting the CW network at feedback@CWTV.com and ask them to reconsider cancelling the show. Maybe if they hear from enough of us, it will make a difference.
We’re so disappointed that “Reba” has been canceled. (Just watched the finale.) What a mistake – I agree this was one of the very best sitcoms ever – up there with The Cosby Show, Dick van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore. It just makes no sense and defies logic to cancel such a popular show. I guess the CW execs are actually trying to alienate viewers – well, they have succeeded!!!!
