It’s been a bumpy ride for Reba fans. The Reba McEntire series was The WB’s highest-rated sitcom for virtually all of its five seasons. You would think that high ratings would ensure that the show would continue on the CW. Not so.
The sitcom had received a two-year commitment from The WB network at the end of its fourth season so, last spring, fans believed their show was safe for an upcoming season six. In fact, when the UPN/WB merger was announced earlier this year, it was said that CBS’ leader Les Moonves sent word that the new CW network would honor the rest of the two-year commitment. The Reba cast and crew wrapped their shooting according to schedule on March 14, 2006.
A few weeks later, CW executives reportedly told 20th Century Fox TV (who produces the show) that they wanted to cancel the deal because the show didn’t attract the new CW’s “desired demographic.” As a result, the Reba fifth season finale, which was originally shot as a cliffhanger (Van and Cheyenne possibly breaking up), was re-edited to include a sentimental montage of images from the show’s run.
CW is said to have changed their mind about the cancellation when they realized they’d have to pay an eight-figure “kill fee” to 20th Century Fox TV. CW instead gave Reba a 13 episode renewal order but didn’t put the sitcom on the Fall 2006 schedule. Would they air?
Well, the wait is finally over. The sixth season of Reba will debut at 7pm on Sunday, November 19th with two new episodes. The following week, a Reba rerun will air at 7pm and a new episode will follow at 7:30pm.
Great news but keep in mind that the CW only committed to purchasing 13 episodes. If the ratings are good enough, it’s said that an order for nine additional episodes will be given — bringing the order to a full season of 22. The additional episodes would start airing by February 2007.
Production on the 13 episodes will be completed in early December so presumably the decision would have to be made soon if the 13th episode was to include any kind of closure for the series. Will that happen in time? Hard to say but, based on the sitcom’s rocky road last Spring, I’m guessing the Reba producers may have a few contingency plans up their sleeves. We’ll keep you posted so, stay tuned!
STOP!!!!! DON’T TAKE REBA OFF THE AIR. Isn’t there another network out there that would like some quality programming to offer. I am very upset that WB is taking REBA off the air. It just goes to show the networks really could care less what the viewers want or think. REBA is a great program and funny. Laughter is a great healer and we need more programs of this caliber on the air that is based on wholesomeness, not who’s in bed with whom and all the sexual inuendos. PLEASE, PLEASE do not take this program off the air. I… Read more »
Please don’t take reba off. It’s been a long time since a show aired on tv that i absolutely adore,,,all the actors are perfect…everything about it is totally totally entertaining…Please somebody do something to keep her on
I have been enjoying the Reba show so much. I hope there is a way that it can be continued. Everyone in the cast is just great and I feel like one of the family. Also, I am envious of Reba’s figure.
I loved the show!! So does my mom, aunts and some people that I work with! I hope that they do bring it back on.
PLEASE…PLEASe…Say it’s not so. Finally a series that a family can watch and laugh themselves silly with.
No nudity, profanity, blood and guts, sex and anti-moral themes and it gets canceled.
My entire extended family and I cannot understand why this wonderful show is canceled. We are so sick of “reality” shows. They are not worth turning the tv on for.
Please reconsider and put this “well worth” watching show back on.
Reba is/was my favorite show. After a hard day I know I can always count on Reba making me laugh. It really is a family show which you can’t find anymore. Please don’t cancel Reba, we need her and Barbara Jeans kind of spirit and comedy on tv. I have nothing to watch on the WB anymore.
I hate that Reba has been cancelled. I agree with the comment above about taking Reba off Friday night just to replace it with Smackdown. I mean really, the two shows just don’t compare. They need to put Reba back on Friday night and move Smackdown. Reba was one of the only shows that was good for the whole family to watch and there aren’t many of those left.
I can’t believe they are taking Reba off the air. I tape her shows at 4, 6, and 8 PM. I can sit and watch them over and over. I think we should do a petition to boycott CW until they put it back on…
We love the show. We are glad to see all the supportive comments listed here – I sure hope all these comments are being forwarded to the powers that be….. maybe they will finally realize they will be terminating a wonderful show.
REBA! We want REBA. Please some network take the REBA show. You know it’s a sure thing. CW how could you do this to us. I know hundreds of people that loved the show. So if you other networks want to show CW up– GET REBA! We love REBA!
