At the start of the season, Ringer looked like it had a very good chance of being renewed for a second season. Unfortunately, the ratings really started to slide once it returned from a two month hiatus. Now, the CW TV series looks more likely to be cancelled.
TVLine recently spoke to co-star Ioan Gruffudd, who plays Sarah Michelle Gellar’s brother-in-law/husband on the show, about the prospects of a second season. This is what he had to say:
As far as knowing [about Season 2] in an official capacity, nobody knows right now. I think everybody’s vying for that attention from the network. We’re very aware of the numbers and that it’s a numbers game. Creatively, we think we have a very strong chance, but as far as numbers, they might reflect a different story. From a personal standpoint, I haven’t even wavered. I was recently cleaning out my trailer and I was trying to remember things to bring back with me next year. It’s the first time I’ve been in this situation where I’ve been on a show for the full 22 [episodes] and we don’t know anything; there are no indicators. As far as the storyline is concerned, we’ve set it up as if we are coming back. We’re not shying away from anything and we haven’t been asked to tie things up neatly — we’ve been given leeway to present new ideas for next season. So, I haven’t wavered in my belief that we are coming back. But you know, I’ve been wrong in the past. [Laughs]

What do you think? Will Ringer be back for a second season? Does it still have a chance or will the show be cancelled?

I love Ringer. A great whodunnit. What can be done to convince the powers that be to keep it on? I love the content, mystery, all of it. What can we do – how can we viewers help:
I blame the network. You cannot try and get a more mature adult audience overnight. The network has always been for the W18-34 Demo and without a decent overhaul the network will struggle in this category.
I agree this past episode was puzzling but I really enjoy this show-Ioan Gruffudd is white hot sexy and Sarah Michelle Gellar should get an emmy nod just based on the fact that she can go from playing sweet naive Bridget to heartless bitchy Siobhan-CW please give this show a chance
I TIVO the show and watch it every week. It has as many surprises as “24” did with the story lines. I hope it returns. Yes, I remember Ioan in the series “Century City.” This is by far, the better drama.
I spent years not watching anything on CW because I found all of their shows less than entertaining (in the extreme). This year is the first year since CW took over for WB or whatever it was that I have actually watched a few of their shows regularly. Ringer, Heart of Dixie, and Secret Circle have been a staple of my viewing pleasure all season. I still won’t even turn the channel on if they are showing any modeling shows, or really most of the other pithy shows that they have to offer. If they decide to cancel any of… Read more »
I’m absolutely loving Ringer! It’s a fresh new show that interesting and keeps you on the edge of your seat constantly! Please renew for season 2 (:
I know the show is great enough to last for years and it’s very, very addictive and grown up and juicy to watch. I am watching it no matter what, it’s the best thing CW’s got on, in my opinion. I only watch this show and Supernatural. I’d watch more 90210 and Nikita too if they put all of this on demand.
Please dont cancel i love ringer
I really hope the CW can see that this show has a lot of potential. Most shows on TV these days are centered around either vampires, circles of friends or drama at high schools. Ringer is just refreshingly different from all that, and I personally think that the writers and the cast are doing an excellent job with the show. Really, I would be very disappointed if the CW doesn’t recognize this. They shouldn’t cancel such a suspenseful show because ratings haven’t been shining lately.
Cancelled applies to series like Charlie’s Angels, shows still on the air that get pulled off while still in production they flop so bad. Shows like Ringer that complete their Seasons and don’t return for another just aren’t renewed, not cancelled.
I love Ringer.. Every Tuesday so excited for the next episode and wondering what new twist turn they are going to throw at you.. I dont remember any shows that had so many twists/turns that your head spins. Is there really a difference between cancelled or not renewed.. I mean either way they are no longer being aired 🙂 Not everyone agrees obviously but i was a major buffy/charmed/angel fan and i love this show as much as i had buffy. It can’t end unless all ends are tied up.. If they know that it’s not going to be renewed… Read more »
I love this show! It would be remarkably idiotic to cancel it! The storyline is great, it twists and turns with unpredictability, and it is unique among the other shows (on all networks)! The cast is excellent, and who doesn’t adore Sarah Michelle Gellar! I really think we need a second season!
Ringer was doing pretty bad back in January. If not for the first few weeks, the ratings are down around the level of the cancelled shows. I don’t know if the plot is moving to slow for the folks who watch the CW, or if Sarah is too old. The successful shows on the channel are all about high school.
As someone from the UK who loves this show, and others with a lengthy story arc, I can’t understand the American habit of breaking off the stories for two months. It’s a little difficult for some people to get back into the mindset of the show, so they stay away.
It has become a trend for networks to do this in the middle of what should be the viewing season (they call it mid-season hiatus or something like that) And I have to say I agree. They whine about the shows not getting the viewers, but then turn around and put the shows on hiatus not once but 2 or 3 times in a season sometimes. Back in the day tv seasons (or series as you call them) were an average of 26 episodes on the short end. Now some complete seasons are like 8 episodes long and are only… Read more »
Couldn’t agree more!! I’m in the UK too.
This habit US networks now have of putting shows on hiatus seems self destructive!!
Ringer is one of the best shows on right now! You can be sure of a curve ball in every episode, it really keeps you on your toes.
If they have to choose a show to cancel, make it The Secret Circle! I have tried to like that show, but it’s just so one dimensional!
So what I get from this is that Ioan Gruffudd’s character will be alive by the end of the season (either that, or Ioan did a great job of making it seem that way in the interview to keep viewers in suspense). The question, though, is if it’ll be as a villain or not. It’s disturbing (in a good way) to see such a sudden 180 degree turn in his character. I just hope The CW hasn’t killed this show because they delayed it in order to give more exposure to — wait for it — Remodeled! Ugh.
As being one of the best shows the cw has on, they sould be foolish not to renew it but they are the cw.
It is not the shows fault for losing ratings after the two month hiatus since few people watch the cw to know when a show returns.
