NBC’s not being very charitable to fans of their summer series, The Philanthropist. The feel-good drama has been cancelled.
The Philanthropist revolves around Teddy Rist (James Purefoy), a once-selfish billionaire who decides to channel his money and power to help those in need. The series also features the talents of Jesse L. Martin, Neve Campbell, Michael Kenneth William, Lindy Booth, Krista Allen, and James Albrecht.
For a summer show, the drama did pretty well in the ratings initially. But, as the weeks wore on, the numbers fell off. NBC stuck with it and ran all eight episodes, with the last one airing on August 12th. Though it looked unlikely that the show would be renewed, many viewers have been holding out hope. The network didn’t make an announcement about the show’s fate but they rarely do.
Now, an upcoming DVD release from Universal Studios Home Entertainment has put the chances of the series returning to rest. They’ve announced the upcoming release of The Philanthropist: The Complete Series. The two-disc set will be available on January 5th and will include all eight episodes but unfortunately won’t have any extras.
What do you think? Are you sorry that the show is officially over? Any storylines you would like to have seen?
What a great idea. A more responsible network , like ABC or CBS, may be willing to take a chance and give the Philanthropist a sesond season. To continue to bring awareness to what is happening around the world. The show starts a dialogue out here in TV land, that could have a positive impact in some of these situataions. The advertisers would benefit and profits would be realized.
It’s a shame!
The show was very well produced, with excellent stories. Ok, sometimes it’s nice to be LOST during 24H, looking for your HOUSE… however only The Philanthropist tried to show universal dramas, universal conflicts. This TV show also tried to let American people know about the whole world beyond their edge. Again, it’s a shame. I’m sure that a second season would bring profits to NBC. I also hope that some big channel as HBO, ABC or CBS be able to see how useful and profitable that show can be.
I really enjoyed every episode of The Philanthropist! It was totally interesting with a great cast and story lines with cause and depth. One of the tV moments I truly valued! Bad move NBC…you lost a good one! R Green Louisville KY
The show had some excellent stories of hope and helping others; I would have enjoyed a season two – the world needs more stories of hope and selflessness. Seems like the ratings are more geared for reality drama and exploiting the lives and pain of others. It’s a shame that the networks have gravitated to the drama of airing out others dirty laundry. Hopefully stories like the philanthropist will return into the homes of America someday soon.
I just searched the show to see when more episodes would be coming On Demand and am so disappointed to see that this show has been canceled. It was so refreshing to see some real problems and global issues addressed in this manner. I was very impressed on how up to date the show was and have been anxiously awaiting the 9th episode or season 2. I truly hope that someone out there in the business will see the potential this show has and get it back in production. I will be searching for petitions and updates until hopefully someone… Read more »
I just searched for the new season and am SHOCKED that it isn’t returning! I’ve been waiting in hopes that it would be back. It’s unfortunate that so many other idiotic shows will get to stay, while something with actual “acting” is canceled.
Totally agree with previous posts. This was a very good, smart and even funny show. What’s wrong with the TV networks???? Keep giving us crap to later blame the system? pleazzzze. Bring this show back !!!!
The Philanthropist is one of the best series to come to TV in a long time. I hope HBO or Showtime will pick it up and continue to produce it. The characters are interesting and have depth. The lead character is believably unbelievable! I want it to continue for many seasons to come!
It really pisses me off how a network like NBC would rather shove money into ridiculous shows than a show like this. I really felt as if this show had several moral strengths that needed to be shown on television. Too bad cooperate America got its way again.
Honestly ridiculous that the show never really had a chance. Put it on my TIVO and kept looking for more episodes and it’s not there. Really a great message that inspired a lot of people. Truly a shame, especially because it was the only show I watched on this network….
Glad it is gone!!! I so looked forward to it being aired, and the first episode showed Black women in every negative cliche imaginable. Extremely disappointing…I never watched again and hoped that it would be cancelled. Yay!!!
We are a group of fans that are trying to get NBC to reconsider their decision to cancel the show. Jesse L. Martin (Phillip Maidstone) was quoted as saying “I don’t want this to just be a television program about philanthropy. I want it to be a philanthropic force.” Well, that is what we are trying to create. We have over 150 supporters and have networked with two non-profits, Bountiful Harvest and GEANCO that focus their efforts on helping the less fortunate in Nigeria. In fact, GEANCO is involved in building the new modern Augustine Memorial Hospital in Anambra State.… Read more »
i have watched the show and it truly has made me a better man.. im a better more caring person because of the show. shame on you nbc for canceling the opportunity to change the lives of millions
Maybe another thought. The least NBC could do is give us a finalee. Tell us what happens and finish the story arch.

Thankyou
what a shame. TV finally arrives with a show that pulls at the heart strings of individuals but also keeps us on the edges of o0ur seats through his wonderflly amazing and heroic adventures. Not to mention the actors all meshed wonderfully and Malfoy and his accent was so kick butt. I really, really enjoyed the show and I trulu am sad to know it is over and I will miss it. Just seems like another “crack in the shell” of what makes us feel good and helps of temporaarily forget the reality of our misory…. This comes from a… Read more »
I’m going to do a typical comment all-caps tantrum: NBC SUX!!!!!!
Serious. First they ax Kings, the most interesting show going on on the network this year due to ratings (hello, do you know Nielsen family???)…due to TERRIBLE marketing, an awkwardly split season, and a damning airing-time move. Then I got interested in the creative plots and wonderful characters (i.e. Teddy Rist), almost KNOWING it would never make it due to some of the same reasons. Hello, marketing? Both these shows seemed to have about a $50 budget for marketing with a single web marketing person. Such a waste…
