LOS ANGELES, September 18, 2014 – FX has ordered a 13-episode second season of the drama series Tyrant, from Emmy® and Golden Globe® Award-winning Executive Producer/Showunner Howard Gordon, it was announced today by Nick Grad and Eric Schrier, the Presidents of Original Programming for FX Networks and FX Productions.
Production of Tyrant is scheduled to begin next spring with the second season returning in the summer of 2015.
“We’re so proud of Tyrant’s performance throughout its first season,” said Grad. “Howard Gordon is one of the best and most successful producers in this business. His ability to combine intelligent, edge-of-your-seat storytelling with events from the current geopolitical climate is truly groundbreaking. We look forward to seeing how Tyrant grows in season two.”
“Working with John Landgraf and his team at FX has been one of the most gratifying experiences of my career,” said Gordon. “I’m truly grateful for the chance to continue working with them on this challenging and exciting project.”
The ratings for Tyrant’s first season were incredibly consistent throughout its 10-week run, with the Adults 18-49 audience average for the first half of the season identical to the second half of the season. On a weekly basis, Tyrant averaged 5.1 million Total Viewers and 2.3 million Adults 18-49 inclusive of linear, time-shifted and non-linear viewing (data through eight weeks).
Despite the initial controversy surrounding the show, the audience response was very favorable. Tyrant generated an audience favorability score of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and a user score of 8.0 out of 10 on IMDb. Verne Gay of Newsday wrote about Tyrant at the conclusion of season one, “Tyrant makes a strong turn in the end…. [Howard] Gordon and [Glenn Gordon] Caron have backed their way into a big idea….highly compelling….A second season has been earned.”
All 10 episodes from the first season of Tyrant are currently available on FX’s VOD platform FXNOW for authenticated subscribers of the network.
From Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning Executive Producer/Showunner Howard Gordon (24, Homeland), Tyrant tells the story of an unassuming American family drawn into the inner workings of a turbulent fictional Middle Eastern nation. Bassam “Barry” Al-Fayeed, the younger son of the dictator of a war-torn nation, ends a self-imposed 20-year exile to return to his homeland, accompanied by his American wife and children, for his nephew’s wedding. Barry’s reluctant homecoming leads to a dramatic clash of cultures as he is thrown back into the familial and national politics of his youth. The cast includes Adam Rayner, Jennifer Finnigan, Ashraf Barhom, Moran Atias, Noah Silver, Anne Winters, Fares Fares, Salim Daw, Justin Kirk, Mehdi Dehbi, and Alice Krige.
Tyrant was created by Gideon Raff and is produced by Fox 21 and FX Productions. The series was developed by Howard Gordon & Craig Wright. Glenn Gordon Caron, Peter Noah, Michael Lehmann, and Avi Nir also serve as Executive Producers along with Chris Keyser as Consulting Producer and Chris Levinson as Co-Executive Producer. Gordon serves as Executive Producer and showrunner, along with his Teakwood Lane Productions, the shingle he has set up at 20th Century Fox Television.

What do you think? Do you like the Tyrant TV show? Are you glad that it’s been renewed for a second season?
just watched the first season of tyrant and loved loved it, great cliffhanger , can’t wait for season 2 and the only problem is the waiting for season 2
Love Tyrant…and Jamal! The cast is awesome sauce but could make Jamal more of a family man and less womanizer in the next season. Don’t kill Barry put him under house arrest w/ his family. Barry is sexy too! Waiting patiently on the next season… I am 54 years old and my sister is 67 yrs and we look forward to Tyrant weekly!
Great decision to bring Tyrant back. Excellent casting, superb acting and intriguing story line! Definitely should be a long-term engagement. Too long to wait for continuation of story!
So GLAD I found this article, Thank you so much FX for bringing Tyrant back!! I watched all 10 and it was a great show! It’s different and it makes you keep wanting to come back. Wish you could make more episodes like maybe 20?? The brothers that you have chosen to play the part are fantastic!! Thanks again FX!!
Love the show. I have a great deal of time in the Middle East. The show is quite accurate and most definitely intriguing. Why do we have to wait so long for a second season? These cable channels have to get more reliable! HBO and Fx along with others need to take the risk and start filming a second season even before the first season has aired! What is with 10 or 13 episodes a season??? Whatever happened to 20 or 24? Aren’t there 52 weeks in a year? Come on entertainment industry, quit ripping us off! Anyways great show,… Read more »
Yes, I agree with you. It going to be a long winter waiting for Season 2.
This is an excellent series and I agree with DJ, much too long to wait for a second season. It was better years ago when a series ran consistently and you didn’t have to wait months to watch the next episodes. There aren’t many good shows to watch on TV these days, so when you find one that is good, you want to continue watching it without a break. What is wrong with you people running the industry? You should recognize a good thing from the beginning!
As a person who studies the Middle East and who appreciates a fictionalized account of a regime, I believe that this is a bold effort by Raff, Gordon and Wright. For those who have written the negative comments I ask “Who else has ever attempted to tackle such a complex and ambitious story via series television?” GREAT JOB FX!!!
I’m not sure why the haters are moaning about this show. It’s totally different from what we’re used to watching, the usual cop shows, etc.
I definitely look forward to Season 2. I was afraid they cancelled it until I saw this article.
Great show, keep up the good work!
Loved it. Looking forward to second season. Can’t come soon enough
I love this show. Having
spent much time in the middle east it
Is so true. I enjoy this show. Please
Let it continue.
Why can’t I find episode 10 of Tyrant? Was always able to watch it on xfinity if we missed a show. Help me.
Thank You FX for bringing Tyrant back. So good to watch something different than police crime shows and reality shows!
Yes, I would love to see TYRANT renewed for Season 2 and more.
liked this show a lot. thought it had been canceled because of the current political climate. so glad that wasn’t the case.
Yay! I just hate that we have to wait until Summer 2015?! This show is AWESOME
Thank you FX for bringing it back!!!
Amazine they got such high reviews. On Screen Rant they reviewed each episode and there was many like myself who found the show to be far below the hype they used to promote it in the first place. I for one took it off my DVR because I have no interest in what happens next. Part of that is the writing, but most of it is I really could care less about these characters. None of them come across as people who I’d get behind for basically anything. The one brother who is the leader is practically a babbling idiot,… Read more »
Tundrabeast, I totally agree with your comment. It’s an ugly show with a bad script.
