NBC has cancelled Awake, their cop series with an alternate reality twist. Created by Kyle Killen (Lone Star), the 13th and final episode will air on Thursday, May 24th. Sadly we might never learn exactly what was going on in the head of Detective Michael Britten (Jason Isaacs).
Fans of this unique TV series are understandably upset and the cast and crew aren’t too crazy about the news either. Here’s what they had to say:
Wilmer Valderrama (Efrem Vega): “Wanted 2 say thank you 2 all our amazing fans 4 being so loyal & loving our @NBCAwake.. We believed in the show &…And put our hearts in every Ep.. We made something that had never been on TV, we are proud of the journey.. And grateful to… Have shared it with you all, we love you.. Make sure to NOT miss our season closing episodes.. We will finish with a bang.. LITERALLY!”
Laura Allen (Hannah Britten): “Circle of life. Back in the ring! Truly, thank you for all who watched. #Awake. #NBC. #whoknowsimight’vebeendeadthewholetimeanyway.”
Dylan Minnette (Rex Britten): “2 more episodes until the finale of #Awake We had such a good run, and the show, despite this, was truly great.” “It was an incredible experience working with everyone, thank you for the opportunity. Couldn’t have been blessed with a better cast and crew” To the cast and crew, he wrote, “You are all so talented, I’m so grateful that I had the chance to work with all of you!… Thank you all so much!”
BD Wong (Therapist John Lee) retweeted a lot of others’ comments and simply wrote, “what a lousy way to wake up from a nap!”
Daniela Bobadilla (Emma): “Sad to be writing this tweet.. From the bottom of my heart I am beyond grateful for the opportunity and experience I had on #Awake. Love…every single person on the cast and crew. So proud to have been part of such an intelligent, cool show. Thank you @killen8!!! :):):)”
Michaela McManus (Tara): “Thanks to everyone who tuned in these past couple months. Very sorry to say good-bye… #RIPAwake”
Nicole Burke (first assistant director): “Just got the bad news #awake was cancelled. Thank you to all the fans that watched and to the talented cast & crew.” “To the brain behind #AWAKE @killen8 Thank you for a wild and crazy ride. I enjoyed every minute well maybe every minute. Till next time!”
Kyle Killen (creator, executive producer): “no, don’t see us taking awake anywhere else. yes, the season finale is a really satisfying way to go out. our best EP + penguin” “guys its cool. awake lasted 600% longer than lone star. at that rate next 1 be on until end of time. now, anyone know if Whitney is hiring?” “that was not meant to be shot at Whitney #promise #justlookingforplacetotakeairmattress”
Lost’s Damon Lindelof wrote to Killen, “Small consolation, but I believe AWAKE will still be talked about in a decade. And fondly.” Killen responded, “thank you. I’ve always wanted to say to someone “you’re a prince” and this seems like the opportunity I’ve been waiting for!”
Josh Friedman, who’s Finder series was also cancelled, wrote, “I choose to live in a version of my life where @killen8 ‘s #Awake is still on the air.”
What do you think? Are you also upset that Awake won’t be coming back for a second season? What would you say to the cast and crew about the program?

Truly saddened by this news! This is my favorite show on television. I am so tired of reality shows and shows filled with shallow, predictable crap! This show was/ is a great show full of twists and turns, and suspense. The actors are awesome. I am pissed. 🙁
This was the first evening show I have ever felt intent interest for (I dont watch prime time). I am so amazed at what the writers and actors/actresses accomplished in these characters and in the story itself. Jason Isaacs is Michael Britten..only way I can figure he does what he does with this character. It’s really easy to look at Jason Isaacs. But it is shocking sometimes at the way he invites you inside the heads and hearts of these different folks he portrays. I think he has not peaked yet as an actor. I say this because I have… Read more »
Unbelievable! Cancel all my favorite shows! Finally something new and different, awesome actors, great plot, and beautifully stylized lighting. I’m super pissed, NBC.
Sad news. Just logged on to view the last episode which was trumped by weather warnings here. It had become one of my few must watch shows. Too bad we weren’t asked prior to the decision and that the show wasn’t given more of a chance. It can take time to find an audience.
So sorry this creative and riveting show has been cancelled. With so much reality crap on the air it was refreshing to have a really smart one hour drama to look forward to each week.
i really enjoyed this show….so sad that it will not be back next season. i wish the networks would cancel all the trashy reality shows and leave the good, entertaining shows alone.
I’m with you Kathy…cancellation may even be a symptom of where society is at, as well as where a network places a powerhouse production!
Are you kidding me! I was just on line looking for theories on what going on with this show. I love it. I am very selective about what I watch. This one had me from the start. Wake up people! So bummed to hear this news. 🙁
So tired of awesome shows like this getting cancelled…either make shows where you never know what’s going to happen & know that you might not be able to pick someone up mid-season, or keep making mindless predictable shows…I prefer smart shows that keep you guessing.
I think that this kind of thing happens too much… If you’re going to cancel a show you should at least have the decency to let it wrap up it’s story line. It is this reason that I have a hard time even trying to invest myself in new shows… for fear that they’ll be cancelled without a resolution. This is not a good way to create loyal watchers of a network…
This was one of the best shows I have seen in a long time. So disappointed it has been cancelled 🙁 It was a sit on the edge of your seat show & the acting was awesome. My best wishes to the cast…you all did a fabulous job 🙂 Will miss this show so much.
Super bummed about this, it was a fantastic show idea.
first time i watched “awake”, like “touch”, it was too much to get my head around but i loved the concept, like an old bruce willis movie in which he didn’t know if he was awake or dreaming. went back to watching the series, after knowing what i was in for, and got hooked. now i really like the series, the story, the stars, the directing, and the acting which is first rate. the concept is also first rate and gets one involved in the story, unlike most tv series where you just sit and watch, “awake” makes you think… Read more »
I can’t believe this show is cancelled! Great acting, engaging characters, original storyline…what is WRONG with these TV execs? What a total bunch of morons! I agree with the last reviewer. I am done watching ANY new shows these networks churn out. I’d rather stick with established shows (like NCIS and The Mentalist), than keep getting duped by these clueless idiots!
To the cast and crew of Awake, I am truly sad that it has been canceled! I think this show was the best I have seen in a long time. To many reality shows have taken over our networks and your show was a breath of fresh air in my book. I loved the whole concept of the show, it was amazing, on the edge of your seat, can’t wait to see the next episode, kinda show. I would have my DVR set to record every show so I didn’t miss a thing and “Katie Barr The Door” if some… Read more »
i do not understand why these stations feel the need to put everything on during the spring/winter and fall. what about summer, the economy is so bad no one can go anywhere and many watch t.v. so why not do it during the summer and make it a summer series, like tnt and lifetime does? most impt why don’t they listen to the people !!!!! . Put them on during the summer and see what response you get. You have no common sense “none of the stations” Any one with common sense would realize that die hard fans are not… Read more »
I completely empathize with your outrage. I wish we could avoid watching first seasons to avoid risking the heartache but it goes without saying that if we all avoid new shows nothing new will ever stick. Also, why do networks keep getting rid of shows that make you think and keep you guessing? On all the CSIs and The Finder, Bones, Body of Proof, SVU and Touch, just to name a few, I like trying to figure out the culprit before the characters do. As long as TV has replaced other passtimes then it should strive to keep our brains… Read more »
