SERIES OFFERS AN INTIMATE LOOK INTO THE LIVES OF YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN BORN WITH DOWN SYNDROME
A&E PARTNERING WITH BEST BUDDIES INTERNATIONAL TO RAISE AWARENESS AND ENCOURAGE OPPORTUNITES FOR PEOPLE WITH INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES
NEW YORK, NY – November 11, 2015 – A&E Network will premiere the new original docu-series “Born This Way,” following a group of seven young adults born with Down syndrome along with their family and friends in Southern California. The six-episode, hour-long series from Bunim-Murray Productions premieres Tuesday, December 8 at 10 PM ET/PT.
Cameras follow the young men and women of “Born This Way,” as they pursue their passions and lifelong dreams, explore friendships, romantic relationships and work, all while defying society’s expectations. In their willingness and courage to openly share their lives, through a lens that is not often shown on television, we learn they have high hopes just like anyone else. The series also gives voice to the parents, allowing them to talk about the joy their son or daughter brings to their family, and the challenges they face in helping them live as independently as possible.
“We are proud to be airing this important and extraordinary series and hope it will inspire meaningful conversations about people with differences,” said Elaine Frontain Bryant, EVP & Head of Programming A&E Network. “‘Born This Way’ is a show with honesty, humor and heart that celebrates and embraces diversity.”
“There is a freshness and honesty in the way these young adults lead their lives; something we could all learn from them. We are enormously thankful to them and their families for participating in this project,” said Jonathan Murray, Executive Producer.
“I’m so incredibly proud to see ‘Born This Way’ highlight the outgoing personalities and amazing abilities of Best Buddies participants like Rachel Osterbach and Sean Mcelwee,” said Anthony K. Shriver, Founder and Chairman, Best Buddies International. “It is my hope that this show will demonstrate to society that individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are just like everyone else and should be fully included in our communities, our workplaces and our lives.”
A&E has partnered with celebrated global non-profit organization Best Buddies International and committed to an on-air PSA featuring Anthony K. Shriver and Best Buddies program participants in support of promoting opportunities and increasing awareness for people living with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

What do you think? Do you like the sound of the Born This Way TV series? Do you plan to check it out?
I love this reality show, I love how high functioning they are. They have hoped and dreams like anyone else. I am very happy if you will continue with the honest reality show. They get to express there feelings and I like that. Please do not cancel this show.
Thank you for producing this show. You have given a gift of hope to so many. Sadly hardly anyone in our area even knew it was on TV. My neighbor is in her 60’s she and her husband are helping to raise their grandson Sean. They have worried about if something happened to them what will become of Sean. You had an episode I recorded and shared with her. I believe it helped! My nephew has Downs and I have always told him he could apply for College and move on in life. He is in 9 th grade and… Read more »
My husband, seven year old daughter and I love this show!!What an awesome group of young adults!! They are all inspiring and so full of life and love! I hope it is brought back for another season. We are completely invested in them all…and want to watch them evolve and grow and experience more of life. Thank you for this wonderful show.
I am really enjoying the show. I have a 10 yr. old son with DS. The show is very well done and gives me hope for my boy. I love all of the cast, but Kristina is my fav. and her parents are great.
What is Angel’s diagnosis?
We are obsessed with this program. We laugh and cry along with the characters. I love all seven of the main characters and am in awe of the parents and their unconditional and beautiful love. This is the most special program I have seen in a very long time. I fell in love with the program first and turned on many others…my young adult children and their friends enjoy it also. We certainly hope there will be more episodes as we just concluded watching the last one where Megan is going back to Colorado. (Also, am eagerly awaiting my tshirt… Read more »
I love this show, and think these are precious lives, Rachel. Is my favorite, and so is her mother. You can really tell this was not only a learning experience for her, but also a teaching experience, she is brilliant. JOHN: cracks me up I think he has a great outlook if he cant be a rapper he will nust work with dogs. He is positive and I would buy his cd. All of these young adults have had their fair share of what I feel like they dont deserve, but I love their support systems. Christine and Angel: are… Read more »
As a parent of a young adult with special needs, I applaud the strength and honesty of the parents of these young adults. It’s hard to let go and grow and you did it gracefully!!
I appreciate this docu-series being aired. It’s a wonderful opportunity you’re giving these dear young people to get their hopes and dreams broadcasted. It is eye-opening and heart-warming. I wish them all the best life has to offer!
Whether the tears were happy or sad, I cried while watching each and every episode of Born This Way. My 14 year old daughter has diGeorge syndrome, also known as VCFS or 22q11 deletion. The genetic disorder is quite similar to Down Syndrome and is almost as common as Down Syndrome. But it is widely undiagnosed; therefore, many people have not heard of it. I am a huge advocate for spreading awareness. Knowledge is hope! Born This Way gives me hope! Hope that my daughter will have a bright, happy and successful future like the inspiring cast on the show.… Read more »
This is quite interesting. I have two adult sons with special needs whose lives are similar. It is good to allow others to understand the joys and lives of special needs. As citizens and parents, there is so much to give to society.
My daughter Erica (27), my husband and I live in Philadelphia. We watched the show together tonight and absolutely loved it. She was amazed to see others similar to herself and it actually brought tears to her eyes. Erica, like the young adults on the documentary realizes her limitations and has a hard time not living life as she see others do. This show is awesome, Wonder if it’s possible for Erica to have the opportunity to share her unique story? Erica attended a unique college program at Temple University Institute on Disabilities after graduating high school. She does her… Read more »
Magen’s Mom Kris is hot … And all these adults are inspirational to all.. To overcome their disabilities and not let them stand in front of their way of their dreams
Yes the show has things to offer but it really needs to be more in touch with the real world of Down Syndrome. Like “normal individuals” ( if there is really anything such as normal individuals) individuals with Down Syndrome have a wide scope of intelligence , behavior, speech etc. there needs to be more variety.
Someone off camera needs to STOP telling Sean to do his eyebrow thing. It makes him look ridiculous and you can actually tell when someone is prompting him! Please be more respectful of these people. This is a very good show that clearly show accurate life experiences of individuals with Down Syndrome, and their friends and families.
Those eyebrows are adorable! I really doubt someone is queueing him. DS kids are quirking. That’s just Sea!
