CBS is having such a good year that they’re increasing their episode orders for some of their most popular shows, according to EW. The orders total 13.5 more hours of programming. In terms of total airtime, that’s the equivalent to ordering a whole new series.
This could mean a few less reruns for viewers… or that the network will be able to dump struggling shows even sooner.
CSI: Miami, How I Met Your Mother, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, and Two and a Half Men have all been given orders for two additional episodes each.
The Big Bang Theory, Criminal Minds, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: NY, The Good Wife, and The Mentalist have each been given one more installment.
What about the rest? Are they in danger of being cancelled? Unless their ratings improve, many of them are.
Accidentally on Purpose — The sitcom just recently received an order for five more episodes. It’s not a full season order but a positive sign considering the show’s mixed ratings history. It could survive to see a second year but don’t expect any more than 18 installments for this season.
Cold Case — Last season, it was a toss-up between this show and Without a Trace. Cold Case won out but CBS execs may be regretting their choice. Last year, Cold Case averaged a 2.68 rating in the demo and 11.8 million viewers. This season, it’s lost much of its audience in the demo (1.94) and fallen to nine million viewers. Unless things turn around, this show will surely be cancelled. Show support page.

Gary Unmarried — CBS renewed this series last Spring though the ratings didn’t mandate it. In season one, it averaged a 2.2 in the 18-49 demo. This season, Gary’s been averaging the same which isn’t great. It could be cancelled or it could survive if CBS stick with the Wednesday night sitcom block.
Ghost Whisperer — The Friday night drama is way down in the ratings this season. Last season, it averaged a 2.53 in the demo and 10.5 million in total viewers. This year, it’s dropped to a 2.06 rating and 8.36 million. It’s on shaky ground for sure and could be cancelled after this season unless it’s saved to add more episodes to its syndication package. Medium — The Patricia Arquette show was saved last season when NBC cancelled it. The deal happened because the show is co-produced in-house by CBS Television Studios and was making money in syndication. Its Friday night numbers are about the same as Ghost Whisperer’s and isn’t safe from the chopping block either. Show support page.
The New Adventures of Old Christine — CBS renewed this sitcom last Spring but the ratings weren’t great; 2.1 in the 18-49 demo. This season, it’s been averaging a 2.0. It could be cancelled but is co-produced by CBS and is more likely to survive so that there will be enough episodes for syndication.
Numb3rs — This is another Friday night show that’s been struggling this season. CBS has just cut its episode order for the season and it looks like a shoe-in for cancellation. Show support page.
Three Rivers — This Sunday night drama has been struggling in the ratings from the start. It isn’t expected to survive past 13 episodes. Show support page.
What do you think? Are any of the endangered shows worth saving?
Note: Some of the 2008-09 demo ratings listed were initially incorrect and have since been updated.

Three Rivers delivered another fantastic and amazing episode on Nov. 8, revealing the characters’ personal lives and the related complexity and conflict. All the actors have had their wonderful scenes to shine brilliantly. Three Rivers was aired at 9:20 PM EST, a 20 minute delay due to football overtime. Three Rivers deserves a chance to show what a bright and sparkling gem of a show this is, so inspiring, heartfelt and heroic, with subtle humor!
Three Rivers is fantastic show with a wonderful message and an excellent cast.
SAVE THREE RIVERS!!!!!
LOVE Three Rivers and Medium. Also like How I Met Your Mother and Big Bang. Am sick to death of CSI-sick, sick, sick of it in all its forms. That’s good news about the Mentalist and the Good Wife-both excellent.
Any show that is put in that time slot will struggle. I record all my television shows and the ones that I recorded on CBS were all late in getting started because of football. Last season it was The Unit and this season it’s Three Rivers. Finally, my husband lost interest in The Unit and stopped watching. The same thing will happen to Three Rivers. Please put Three Rivers in another time slot. I love this show!
Please put Three Rivers on another day and see how good the ratings become!
Give this show another chance instead of dropping it like you did Moonlight!
SAVE THREE RIVERS SAVE THREE RIVERS
MOONLIGHT WAS CANCELLED WITHOUT GIVING IT A CHANCE DON`T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE TWICE
Nagyon szeretném nézni a Three Riverst Magyarországon .
Please save Three Rivers. The actors are all really good in their parts and the stories have gotten really interesting. It would be a shame to cancel it rather than moving it to another night.
There is so little really interesting TV any more that I choose to watch very little of it. The procedurals have gotten so boring. However, I never miss Three Rivers.
Three Rivers really is a great show! The episodes are getting better and better and now as the character development is starting it gets even more interesting. It’s hard for a new show to run against a sports event and a very popular other series.
The cast is doing really great. You have dramatic, love, humour in the series. It’s about an important theme. I think it really has a lot of potential. Give it a chance, please. Maybe broadcasting it on another day already could help to get better qoutes.
In my opinion, CBS must do justice to Three Rivers, is an original medical drama with a very important message to many millions of patients who are waiting for an organ to survive and in the same situation can be any of us at any time without notice, this program can move the consciences of all to make us more and more, the donors of organs. Besides of his original argument and its message of solidarity, the entire cast does a wonderful job, they all offer us a great interpretation of his characters, are perfectly credible doctors, and the stories… Read more »
Accidentally on Purpose and Medium can go.
Please keep Cold Case. Bring back The Unit.
I didn’t think Three Rivers would ever get going but it did and it is brilliant… the actors are getting into character and very well I must say … Alone Together was a magnificent episode … It had humor, a doctor coming of age, sadness of a marriage break up but a hint of romance .. I can’t say enough about Three Rivers It sends a message that has never been explored before tranplantation .. the actors tackle a medical language with ease and it is easy to believe it is that they are real doctors and nurses … I’ve… Read more »
I agree with you in everything you say.
Your words are my words.
Saying a SHOW is great because you’re obsessed with the lead ACTOR is lame. That’s right O’Loughlin freaks, I’m looking at you…
