Though Eureka remains one of Syfy’s most popular TV series, the cable channel cancelled it earlier this week. What’s even more perplexing is that Syfy announced that Eureka had been renewed for an abbreviated sixth season last week. They even issued a statement to assure viewers that they hoped to continue the show beyond that. Why was it cancelled?
Eureka executive producer Amy Berg shed some light on the move via Twitter, indicating that Syfy didn’t want to cancel the show but financially, Comcast mandated it. She said, “We are the network’s golden child in every way, except profit margins. Fact is, #Eureka is an expensive show to make. And we could not maintain the quality of our show with the cuts it would take to make us profitable for Syfy’s new parent company. Our creative execs at Syfy fought hard to keep us. Trust me, they LOVE us. We just couldn’t make the numbers work.”
The cast and crew were in the midst of filming the end of season five when the cancellation news came down. With such short notice, it seemed unlikely that they would be able to bring the show to a satisfying conclusion with such short notice.
Thankfully, Syfy has now ordered one additional episode so that, as Berg puts it, “we can end the series on our terms.” She indicated that she’s working on the series finale and it will be shot the week of the 21st.
For those keeping count, this means that there are 19 episodes of Eureka left; five more for this season and 14 for season five.
What do you think? Are you glad to hear there will be a true series finale? How would you like to see the show end?

I have to agree with everyone here. My kids are just old enough to start watching Eureka with us so we’re Netflixing the 1st few seasons with them. This is an AWESOME show and I used to think Comcast and SyFy were awesome – no more! The excuse of “it’s too expensive” bullpucky! Comcast is making money hand over fist. This show lets my kids see what the future could be, what might be possible… instead now we’re inundated with Jersey Shore, WrestleMania and WWE and other crap reality shows. Gimme a break! Bring back and keep good family TV!… Read more »
I get so tired of these so-called bean counters , who take great tv shows off the air, fox did with human target. CBS and NBC are inundated with reality crap. which I’ll never watch. combat is a joke.
This is a really good show. Another example of exec’s killing a show they probably never saw. Please keep this show running.
So now a CABLE COMPANY (a hated one at that) with absolutely no knowledge of the creative process is dictating what will air on television stations???
Man 30 Rock got it so right when they began showing what Kabletown would do to the networks of NBC.
ComCOST Sucks!!!!! No one ever stands up for us little people who just want to sit down at night after working extra to keep our jobs to barely pay our bills for a little enjoyment. If I was King for a Day I would get rid of ALL Overhead Government and Civilian idiots and make them live off what we earn. Retired USAF 21 yrs, but Congress, Senate, etc. keep getting big pay raises.
I went to Comcast web site and to the Contact Us link — a little buried. Told them how I felt about the cancellation. Why not inundate them with complaints? AT&T was swamped with thousands of complaints when they dropped the Hallmark Channels because of financial considerations. This didn’t result in the re-establishment of Hallmark on Uverse, but at least they heard directly how their customers felt. At this point, withholding business and complaining is all we can do as customers or would be customers. Unfortunately, too big to fail companies could really care-less about customer satisfaction even on a… Read more »
Shame on you Comcast. Your executives aren’t making enough money? Maybe you need another private jet.
I have to admit that the reasons stated are idiotic to say the least. “Comcost” really needs new people at the top. They know nothing about keeping fans of the show or their customers happy.
**** YOU COMCAST
It really sucks I enjoyed that show and to cancel it because comcast so demands it. I’d love to tell em to screw it but money is way to important to them then its time to find a new channel…
Eureka’s been cancelled! I’m crushed. I hate the SYFY channel now. This has been such a charming show, great cast, writers, all. The SYFY channel was one of THE main reasons I stuck with cable or satellite. I like Warehouse 13, Alpha’s ok, but it’s not enough to keep me there, once Eureka is gone. All the actual, good, well written scifi series are gone, it leaves just “junk”. At first it was a GREAT channel, lots of cool stuff. Now all those junk-special-effects, poorly written movies, ghost hunters, ew. Just like cancelling The Dresden Files after 1 very-well reviewed… Read more »
I guess it a good thing that so much of Sanctuary is shot on a green screen. I thought though Eureka deserved better.
I hate Comcast.
Well even before they cancelled Eureka.
Go figure! Another quality show shot down because some a-hole executive wants more money in his pocket!!! I reluctantly pay for cable as it is, and if I didn’t have kids I probably wouldn’t. I see no sense in continuing to pay for programming when they continually take off the good shows like this!!!
I have DirecTV and I’m pretty happy with it. Maybe you should visit their website and see what channels the carry with each package. Unless you can’t get satellite TV in your area for some reason, which would be a shame.
I would like to see the series end after about 30 more seasons.
I am appalled that EUREKA is being cancelled. According to the article I just read, comcast ( please note the lower case letters indicating my total dislike for them due to this decision ) is responsible for this. Obviously comcast does not care for good programming and the people that enjoy such, rather this immensely profitable company (please see their profit/loss statements ) shuns such shows and audience for the stupid people that love idiotic programming. I, for one, will avoid all comcast products and therefore their advertisers forever. The excuse that it is expensive is ridiculous. Few new sets… Read more »
I agree Peter Schade. It’s what we want to see.
