After two seasons on the air, CBS has pulled the plug on their Wednesday night sitcom, Gary Unmarried. The TV show won’t be back in the fall for season three.
Gary Unmarried revolves around a newly-divorced house-painter and dad, Gary Brooks (Jay Mohr), who’s readjusting to the single life. Others in the cast include Paula Marshall, Ryan Malgarini, Kathryn Newton, Keegan-Michael Key, and Brooke D’Orsay.
The sitcom debuted in September of 2008 to a mediocre 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.84 million viewers. The first season’s 20 episodes ended up averaging a 2.2 in the demo and 7.06 million viewers.
Those numbers put Gary Unmarried on the bubble for renewal. It ultimately escaped cancellation, likely because CBS co-produces the sitcom and decided to keep trying to make the Wednesday night comedy block work.
This season, the show’s ratings didn’t improve, averaging a 2.2 in the demo and 6.8 million viewers.
That wasn’t good enough to earn a renewal this time around and CBS has cancelled the series after 37 episodes. The network has also canned The New Adventures of Old Christine and Accidentally on Purpose.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that Gary Unmarried’s been cancelled, that there won’t be a third season?

I can’t believe it!! This show was so entertaining and hysterical! What is wrong with the television stations?? I have had several shows that I enjoy watching cancelled. It’s getting really frustrating! I hate watching criminal and medical shows…it’s depressing. It was nice to have something on each week that made you laugh and was light-hearted! Horrible decision on the station’s part!!
I HOPE THIS WAS A MISTAKE BECAUSE I WATCH ABOUT 1/2 HOUR OF TV A WEEK AND THIS WAS IT…..FINALLY FOUND A SHOW THAT MADE ME LAUGH….THANKS CBS…U TOOK A FUNNY SHOW AND DECIDED TO GET RID OF IT BECAUSE?????
Worst mistake ever, and they’ve had practice. Gary Unmarried is my favorite TV series, even better than the Big Bang Theory
Ny husband and I are REALLY UPSET!!!!! We loved the show!!!! Please bring it back!
My husband and I are very upset about the cancellation of our 2 favorite shows , Old Christine and Gary Unmarried .We were surprised thought they were great , tirecof all these stupid reality shows.
Are the networks crazy or what, it was one of the funniest show on the tv and it was voted the best new show and then they cancelled it. The networks r going too crazy for reality shows and it is overtaking the networks. What about the viewers who like the sitcoms over real life, we live this every day and appreciate the comedies to give us laughter in our lives.
EXACTLY!!!! MY FAMILY WATCHED THIS SHOW AND TAPED IT…THE ONLY! SHOW WE WOULD DO THIS FOR…..CBS????WHAT THE HECK WERE YOU THINKING….LETS GET RID OF A HILARIOUS SHOW
I really enjoyed Gary Un-Married. I’m not sure where they could have gone with the story but it always made me laugh.
cbs bring it back it was a great show
this show was always something i looked forward to watching every week! how can you cancel a great show, so what the ratings didnt increase, its not like it decreased alot! 7million viewers is still ALOT! i will miss that show so much, i hope they know how much of a mistake they made!
Between CBS & TBS, our favorite TV shows are disappearing. Knowing that Gary Unmarried & My Boys are gone, we’ve decided we’ll respond in kind by banishing those 2 stations in our home. There was nothing funnier on tv, so we’ll do something else instead of watching some of the boring new shows that have taken there places.
I think you should fire whoever is in charge of deciding which shows to keep and which to let go. They are obviously doing some bad drugs.
CBS cancelled Gary and Christine for that crap-assed survivor show? They suck.
I really wanted the show to come back. We enjoyed both Gary Unmarried and The new Adventures of Old Christine. Those were my favorite shows. Hopefully CBS will realize the mistake they made.
gay………for cancelling that freakin awesome show …it was hilarious ,especially the funny sarcasim between gary and his ex-wife
Both my husband and I are sad that “Gary Unmarried” is gone! We really enjoyed that show, especially the episodes where ‘Gary’s brother’ appeared. We will miss it.
