Last night, FOX aired the Gracepoint finale which wrapped up the mystery of who killed Danny Solano. What’s next?
Gracepoint begins when a young boy is found dead on an idyllic beach in the small northern California town of Gracepoint. The tragedy and media frenzy soon turns neighbor against neighbor as the police try to figure out what happened. The cast includes David Tennant, Anna Gunn, Michael Peña, Virginia Kull, Madalyn Horcher, Kendrick Sampson, Nick Nolte, Jacki Weaver, Kevin Rankin, Sarah-Jane Potts, Stephen Louis Grush, Kevin Zegers, Jessica Lucas, and Nikolas Filipovic.
As fans know all too well, the ratings for Gracepoint have been very poor all season. It looked like the network might pull the series — or at least ship it to Saturday nights — but FOX let all 10 episodes run on Thursday nights.
Gracepoint was billed as a “limited series” but that designation doesn’t seem to mean too much these days. If a show is a ratings success, networks will find a way to keep a show going. If it’s a bomb, limited series or not, a show’s going to be cancelled.
In a recent interview, showrunner Anya Epstein said that last night’s episode wasn’t intended to be a series finale. Broadchurch (the UK show that Gracepoint is based on) was renewed for a second season and the feeling was that Gracepoint could return as well.
Epstein notes, “It was not meant to be self-contained and we have a lot of ideas and a lot of excitement about where it could go. It remains to be seen whether we’ll get a chance to actually do that. It doesn’t seem terribly likely at the moment.”
Since Gracepoint is all-but guaranteed to be cancelled, hopefully the writers will share what they had in mind for season two at some point in the future.
UPDATE: FOX has officiually cancelled the series but…
What do you think? Would you watch a second season of Gracepoint? Were you satisfied with the finale?
I would watch a second season but definitely the understand the poor ratings. There were absolutely no positive characters you could get attached to and the whole show was gloomy and dark emotionally and visually. The subject matter was very sad and dark, the weather was always gloomy and they made every one in town dark and of questionable character.
This was my favorite new show. I couldn’t wait to watch it each week! Don’t understand why networks don’t give shows a chance like they used to. I mean look at 90210, it didn’t do well in the beginning until it was moved around and found its audience! I am solo disappointed. Loved this show.
Season 2 of the British version, Broadchurch, has already begun airing on BBC America. It’s much better than Gracepoint, which was a copy of Broadchurch. You can catch up now.
