Thomas Magnum is off the case. CBS has cancelled the Magnum PI TV series so it won’t be returning for a fifth year and the 2022-23 TV season. *Status update below.
An action-drama series, Magnum PI stars Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill, Tim Kang, and Amy Hill. Recurring performers include Lance Kim, Chantal Thuy, and Martin Martinez. This reboot of the 1980s TV show follows Thomas Magnum (Hernandez), a decorated former Navy SEAL who repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator. He lives in a guest cottage on Robin’s Nest, the luxurious estate where he works as a security consultant to supplement his P.I. business. The “majordomo” of the property is Juliet Higgins (Weeks), a beautiful and commanding disavowed MI:6 agent who keeps Magnum in line. When Magnum needs back-up on a job, he turns to his trusted buddies and fellow POW survivors, chopper pilot Theodore “TC” Calvin (Hill) and Orville “Rick” Wright (Knighton), a former Marine door-gunner who now runs a nightclub. Magnum frequently has run-ins with police detective Gordon Katsumoto (Kang) and the two are more alike than either cares to admit. The unofficial “House Mom” and cultural curator of Robin’s Nest, Teuila “Kumu” Tuileta (Hill) is also one of Magnum’s biggest fans.
Airing on Friday nights, the fourth season of Magnum PI averaged a 0.42 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.24 million viewers. Compared to season three, that’s down by 20% in the demo and down by 6% in viewership in the live+same day ratings (including DVR playback through 3:00 AM). In the live+7 day ratings, the reboot averaged a 0.70 demo and 7.38 million with delayed viewing added in. It is likely the most-watched broadcast series to be cancelled this season.
Deadline reports that the cancellation comes after CBS and the show’s studio, Universal Television, couldn’t come to an agreement for a fifth year. As traditional viewing has been dropping, networks are less willing to spend as much on shows that they don’t own. There’s no word yet on the potential of Universal TV shopping the series elsewhere.
In the past 24 hours, CBS has also cancelled B Positive, How We Roll, Good Sam, and United States of Al.
What do you think? Have you been keeping up with the Magnum PI TV series on CBS? Are you sorry to hear that it’s been cancelled and won’t have a fifth season?
*7/1/22 update: NBC has made a deal to revive the Magnum PI series for seasons five and six.
I enjoyed Magnum very much. It was a great lead in to Blue Bloods. This is sad nrws!
We definitely want to continue the Magnum PI story. So much, yet, to explore. So many possible story lines with all the wonderful characters. We looked forward to our Aloha every week.
i am also very sad to hear that there wont be a 5th season of the reboot of”Magnum P.I.”..love jay hernandez he is a very good actor..perdita weeks is good and the rest of the cast..i hope another network will pick up a 5th season
CBS is run by idiots. They never gave Magnum PI a chance. They blocked continuity by running specials and garbage shows. I hope someone with more brains picks it up.
Very disappointed! I looked forward to Friday nights watching Magnum. Netflix, Hulu or another network needs to pick the show up. Give it a few more seasons.
Amazing it made it this long with the idiots at CBS, Pandemic aside, CBS constantly interrupted continuity (some Dance Show for 2-3 weeks, Reality nonsense, Burl Ives, the NCAA’s), just as the Show was finding itself, albeit returning to ‘develop characters’ as the Original did. This after Lenkov’s fixation with shoot=.m ups and violence that would keep any and all from Honolulu-Waikiki. There was something about the Final Episode of the Season, as if they all knew something, and were wrapping their Characters, from Katsumoto, Kamu, TC and Rick, before the Magnum-Higgins dream sequence. From the beginning Higgins morphing and… Read more »
This is one show I watch every week. Is there a way to protest and get it renewed? Jay Hernandez is a breath of fresh air–I like the relationship with him and the other characters, especially Higgins. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE renew Magnum P. I. for a fifth year.
I agree totally, wish we had a say in this! 🙁
Well, of course they cancelled it. After the way that season finale ended, it was like bait for clueless network executives.
Every ****** “reality” show on CBS?? Completely safe, of course.
How many more tv shows are CBS going to cancel despite good ratings. Very disappointed, I used to watch Tom Selleck in the original with my parents and really enjoyed Jay Hernandez playing the same character. Hope another network picks it up.
Bring back Magnum PI. One of the best shows of major stations.
This was my favorite show, with all the unsavory shows that these network broadcast they take away a show people really enjoyed and looked forward too. CBS should rethink this if they expect viewers in the future
The revolution is coming. We want MAGNUM renewed. Remember the peanuts that brought JERICO back. I hope CBS likes pineapple. And fans demOnstrating en masse.
So sorry to hear it’s cancelled especially the way it ended. They leave ridiculous shows on & cancel the good ones. Shame on you CBS!
Boo to CBS! What will take Magnum PI’s place, another stupid game/reality show? I’m not watching! “Magnum” really created its own identity separate from the original.
BOOOOO to canceling this show, it’s the only thing worth watching on Friday nights.
