Thomas Magnum is off the case. CBS has cancelled the Magnum PI TV series so it won’t be returning for a fifth year and the 2022-23 TV season. *Status update below.
An action-drama series, Magnum PI stars Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill, Tim Kang, and Amy Hill. Recurring performers include Lance Kim, Chantal Thuy, and Martin Martinez. This reboot of the 1980s TV show follows Thomas Magnum (Hernandez), a decorated former Navy SEAL who repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator. He lives in a guest cottage on Robin’s Nest, the luxurious estate where he works as a security consultant to supplement his P.I. business. The “majordomo” of the property is Juliet Higgins (Weeks), a beautiful and commanding disavowed MI:6 agent who keeps Magnum in line. When Magnum needs back-up on a job, he turns to his trusted buddies and fellow POW survivors, chopper pilot Theodore “TC” Calvin (Hill) and Orville “Rick” Wright (Knighton), a former Marine door-gunner who now runs a nightclub. Magnum frequently has run-ins with police detective Gordon Katsumoto (Kang) and the two are more alike than either cares to admit. The unofficial “House Mom” and cultural curator of Robin’s Nest, Teuila “Kumu” Tuileta (Hill) is also one of Magnum’s biggest fans.
Airing on Friday nights, the fourth season of Magnum PI averaged a 0.42 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.24 million viewers. Compared to season three, that’s down by 20% in the demo and down by 6% in viewership in the live+same day ratings (including DVR playback through 3:00 AM). In the live+7 day ratings, the reboot averaged a 0.70 demo and 7.38 million with delayed viewing added in. It is likely the most-watched broadcast series to be cancelled this season.
Deadline reports that the cancellation comes after CBS and the show’s studio, Universal Television, couldn’t come to an agreement for a fifth year. As traditional viewing has been dropping, networks are less willing to spend as much on shows that they don’t own. There’s no word yet on the potential of Universal TV shopping the series elsewhere.
In the past 24 hours, CBS has also cancelled B Positive, How We Roll, Good Sam, and United States of Al.
What do you think? Have you been keeping up with the Magnum PI TV series on CBS? Are you sorry to hear that it’s been cancelled and won’t have a fifth season?
*7/1/22 update: NBC has made a deal to revive the Magnum PI series for seasons five and six.
ThisThis was and is a great show, loved all the characters had great stories telling and great acting by all the characters. It is so hard to find a great show to watch on TV anymore it seems people are into fake reality shows (The Amazing Race, Survivor and The Bachelor) and how many FBI type shows do we need (FBI, FBI International, FBI Most Wanted get the point) also NCIS (NCIS, NCIS Hawaii, NCIS Los Angeles) people today are so out of touch with what is going on in our world, there is nothing but bad and fake news,… Read more »
Please do not cancel this show, there are way too many reality, game shows on already. Really enjoy this show without a lot of gay crap pushed in your face. Think you are making a big mistake !!!!!!!!!!!
This makes me mad that they canceled Magnum PI! The stories are good the characters are good! What are you people doing that claim to be in charge of good shows like this and you cancel them and put some stupid show on???
We will miss Magnum P.I.! Storylines were so much better this season. Characters were just getting interesting. The problem wasn’t the show, it was the time slot — who watches television on a Friday night? I agree, CBS is making a mistake canceling MagnumP.I.
Being a fan of both Magnum shows ……it was disappointing to say the least too hear that they killed it before season 5….I like the new plot twist with magnum and Higgins would have like to see that storyline go further….Netflix are you there….you guys saved other shows work your magic
Friday nite will not be the same…one of the best shows on CBS. Big mistake.
I love this show so much and I love all the actors. There’s nothing better out there so where’s the problem. Just leave it alone
I expect to see season 5
There is nothing that I can say that has not already been said by those before me. This was the show that I looked forward to all week. I feel like cancelling my cable subscription. This is not the first show that I have loved that has been cancelled!! Please someone else pick it up!!
CBS sneakingly tries to lower the rating numbers of shows that they don’t want to pay higher production costs of (ie dramas instead of reality/talent shows) by constantly showing repeats or changing the nights that people have gotten used to watching them. They did that with NCIS New Orleans, Bull, etc. But the ratings didn’t go down by much and often still won their time slots so their arguments for cancelling don’t hold much water. I wish cable networks would pick up these shows and leave the networks in the ditch.
There is no valid reason for Magnum P.I. to be canceled. CBS executives have made a bad decision when they canceled this show. It was my favorite show and I couldn’t wait to see it every Friday night. CBS should be ashamed of themselves for disappointing so many fans and the actors who worked so hard to produce such a great show for us. If CBS does not reconsider this cancelation, I will be boycotting CBS and I hope others follow suit. I am still in shock over the cancelation. I hope another Network comes forth and brings Magnum P.I.… Read more »
Come on Magnums a great show…. Bring it back, PLEASE
I enjoyed watching Magnum PI every Friday night and I am very disappointed it is canceled . I wish CBS would reconsider. There are way too many sit coms and talent shows on TV so it was nice to have a great program to look forward to at the end of a work week.
I love this show. Can’t believe another great show is cancelled!!!!
You cancel good, entertaining shows and keep the crap. I hope Magnum is picked up by someone way more smart, savvy and in tune than CBS…
Great thanks CBS. Yet again another quality TV show scrapped.
