Tonight, Numb3rs finishes off its sixth season with episode 118, “Cause and Effect.” Will the show be back next season? A decision hasn’t been made yet but lots of people are betting that it will be cancelled.
Numb3rs follows FBI Agent Don Eppes (Rob Morrow) and his genius brother, Charlie (David Krumholtz), who helps the authorities solve cases with mathematics. The cast also features Judd Hirsch (as their father), Alimi Ballard, Dylan Bruno, Navi Rawat, Aya Sumika, and Peter MacNicol.
The series debuted in January 2005 and has long been a successful player for CBS on Friday nights. In season one, Numb3rs averaged a 3.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and about 11.1 million viewers. They went up in season two, with an average of a 3.3 rating and 11.7 million viewers. Viewership has fallen since then however and last season, Numb3rs scored a 2.2 and 10.2 million.
This season, Numb3rs’ ratings have dropped further still — averaging a 1.8 rating and 8.26 million viewers each week. As a result of the decline in ratings, CBS (which is having a very good season) decided to cut back on the number of episodes and reduced their season order from 22 to 16 installments.

The official reason for the decrease is that CBS had too much programming and needed space to try out new series. Next week, Numb3rs’ timeslot will be occupied by a new show, Miami Medical.
CBS has maintained that the fate of Numb3rs hasn’t been decided yet but, considering the series’ production costs and ratings, it seems fairly certain that the show is done.
In fact, ABC and FOX are betting on it. The networks have already cast Morrow and Krumholtz in new pilots.
Morrow will star in a dramatic pilot called The Whole Truth for ABC, opposite Joely Richardson. He’ll play a fiercely competitive and successful defense attorney who is close friends with his equally talented courtroom adversary (Richardson). Whole Truth is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.
Meanwhile, Krumholtz has been cast in a comedy pilot for FOX called Tax Man. The project’s being produced by Ron Howard and stars Krumholtz as an IRS Agent who’s trying to find nobility in his work. Judy Greer recently joined the cast.
If CBS does decide to bring Numb3rs back for another season, both Morrow and Krumholtz will be obligated to return. However, the other networks wouldn’t cast them in new pilots unless they felt it was a very strong possibility that Numb3rs would indeed be cancelled.
What do you think? Would you like to see Numb3rs return for a seventh season or is it time to say goodbye to the Eppes?

Please bring back numbers. I love this show and is the only show I record on Friday nights, I have a tradition of waking up on saturday morning pouring a bowl of cereal and watching numbers and I’ve given Miami medical a shot at replacing numbers but I’m sorry it’s an ok show not a great show like numb3rs. My Saturday mornings will never be the same… Bring back numbers!!!!!!
I think two shows should end on this “leaving” story line… Numbers and Bones… I’ve faithfully watched them and adore them but making the exit lines the way each show did make it hard to reason why everyone should or would come back to lives fighting crime. I was bleary with tears but thought they both (the shows) were cancelled with grace…. funny… now there are hints of both returning….
I can’t believe that cbs would cancel such a great show. I’ve watched Miame Medical and it sucks. The reality shows are taking over and i really dislike them, if this is reality heaven help us. If thats all they have to offer maybe its time to turn TV’s off, cancel your cable, and read a good book.
Numb3rs is way better than Miami Medical. Bring it back!
Please do not cancel Numb3rs. It’s a great show and we want to see it come back for a seventh season. We’ve been faithful viewers for the past six years and we really enjoy it!
I have to say that Barbara Chamam’s comment about there being few shows on that recognize the intelligence of their audience made me laugh “because” when the show first came on I thought, “FORGET IT! I GOT D’s & F’s IN MATH, NOT INTERESTED!” But I started watching reruns on TNT as there was nothing better on from 4:00a.m. – 6:00a.m. and I LOVE IT!!! You don’t have to be good in Math, it’s a very interesting format and the addition (LOL! No pun intended but it was there anyways.) of family, romance, and friendship along with the action and… Read more »
I love the show. I have been hooked since I started to watch the show in 2005. It makes you think a little and the endings are mostly surprising. It will be a shame if they cancel the show.
I hate to see the end of Numb3rs. One of the most intelligent and original TV shows in a very long time. I am so sick of all these lousy sitcoms and realty programs. Guess its time to turn off the television and read a book.
Numbers is my #1 show to watch . It has alittle bit of everything in it, Action, Suspense, Drama, and makes you think Please keep Numbers for another season or 2 or 3.
Numbers had a little of everything: suspense, action, family, romance and well written stories with good characterizations. Of course they took it off.
i’m afraid it may have been canceled, i just saw a promo for a new abc show called the whole truth and it stars Rob Morrow
KEEP NUMBERS, It has a bit of everything, suspense, action, family, people who really care about each other. There is so much crap on tv, KEEP NUMBERS
I am 25 and don’t fit in the “over the hill crowd” and love this show! Why cancel all the good shows to make room for other shows that you just cancel any way?
It would be a real shame if a show as brilliant as Numb3rs was axed. There are too few drams around already that recognise the inteligence of thier audience and give content which actually makes one think. Its a really great programme and needs to runa t least for a few more series.
I totally agree with the others here about the over the hill crowd..geesh..leave on the decent intellegent TV shows and dump a few of the “reality” crap. We are the demographic that HAS deposable income to purchase the commercials items paying for the show..the younger generation are still living off their parents or entitlement programs…Wake up and smell the roses. Keep Numbers on the air.
