ABC recently unveiled a new medical drama, Off the Map, which was created by Jenna Bans and is co-executive produced by Bans, Betsy Beers, and Shondra Rimes. All three ladies have been closely involved with Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. Will Off the Map be as successful as these other medical dramas or be cancelled after one season?
Off the Map follows six doctors who move to a tiny town in the South American jungle to help the residents and man an understaffed and under-stocked medical clinic. The cast includes Caroline Dhavernas, Jason George, Jonathan Castellanos, Mamie Gummer, Martin Henderson, Rachelle Lefevre, Valerie Cruz, and Zach Gilford.
This new TV show debuted on January 12th to a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic (the number that really matters) and 7.57 million total viewers. That was the night of the President’s speech in Tucson which caused some disjointed viewing in some areas. ABC decided to rerun the series premiere on the following night to give it more exposure, displacing Private Practice.

Despite that extra coverage, Off the Map dropped by nearly 9% in the key demo in week two. That’s not bad percentage-wise but the debut number was pretty low to begin with. The series attracted a 2.1 rating in the demo and 5.79 million viewers. Last night’s episode dropped 14% to a 1.8 rating and 5.06 million viewers.
After just three weeks, Off the Map is near the bottom of ABC’s demo rankings of scripted series, tying struggling No Ordinary Family. That’s not good at all and since Off the Map’s ratings haven’t stabilized yet, they may keep falling.
In the past, the alphabet network has renewed one or two struggling freshman series for a second season. Unless the ratings start going up, that looks like Off the Map’s only hope for survival. There are 13 episodes in season one and, for now, the finale is scheduled for April 6th. Time will tell if that ends up being the season or series finale.

I LOVE this show. PLEASE bring it back!!!! The cast is GREAT. My husband normally doesn’t like Medical shows but this one got his attension also. Everyone I talked to LOVES this show as well. Who decides on what stays and what goes?
This is MUCH BETTER than Private Practice & Grey’s Annatomy.
I don’t understand how they can keep the junk shows like The Bachelor, America’s got Talent etc. To me these shows are just fillers and NOT WORTH watching.

I hope they continue the show. I just realized now that my dvr has not recoreded any episodes in a long time. I am so busy, that I didn’t realize that they may be cancelling the show. 🙁 I haven’t gotten into a medical show since the first few episodes of E.R. were on.
Please keep this series, It is as exiting and witty as Greys Anatomy. I stumbled in it at the internet when I was searching some information about one of the actors. I started watching it and I can’t stop watching, II’m totally hooked. I’m now only a few episodes from the end, but I don’t want to finish it just for the few next years. So please keep it going, I think when the viewers rates are a little low, it is just because people didn’t discover this series yet.
I thought this was the best New show in a long time. I found it to be as action packed and fast like the show 24 was! I really hope you will consider keeping this show on the air. Good actors, good stories, and totall exciting. It is over and you feel like you just start watching it!
I so love this show. I recorded all the episodes and just started watchin them them today and I couldnt stop. I just hope they decide not to cancel it.

I love this show!!! i’m a huge fan of greys anatomy and all of the medical shows and i loved this one even more!!<3
I loved this show. It was so different from all the other same doctor shows. Being in a jungle made it have a different feel to it. Plus my 9 year old son got into with me. He didn’t understand everything going on, but with all the different situations of people getting hurt in a jungle and the hospital not being supplied with all the equipment as a real hospital would. We loved it you need to keep it on again…

Keep this show going, I really havent had a show that was this great. Me as long as everyone I know that watches it are just dying for it to start up again. If first you dont succeed try and try again 🙂 Isnt that what they always say. I totally need to know what is going to happen in the next season!!! From all your fans out there do it for us!!
I loved the show thought it was better than grey’s Anatomy , and im a big Grey’s Anatomy fan, but i really thought this show was awesome and should stay i need 2 know whats going to happen next there needs to be a season 2.

It’s also what has inspired me to want to work with the Doctors/Nurses Without Borders; and I’m only 18.
